My daughter's Toshiba satellite 300 laptop with Vista Home won't get past the loading page, the one which has a series of bars going across part of the screen and the words Microsoft Corporation underneath.
I've tried the following:
1) tapping f8 on switching on>repair your computer. takes 5 minutes to go thro' the repair and then fails to load
2) Debugging mode ..........HD light doesn't come on...fails to load
3)last known config> chkdsk.....fails to load.
4)safe mode stays on :windows//system32/drivers/crcdisk.sys for ages then fails to load and the HD light goes out
At every stage I get the bars going across the screen as when I start up normally.

The battery was discharged so I plugged in the charger the orange battery light came on but didn't start flashing and I can't remember if it should when charging!!
Is this a hardware or software problem?
Any suggestions?
I can't remember if the laptop came with a repair disc or even a copy of Vista.

sounds like a software prob....

to perform a repair, you need a windows disc inserted.

Are you sure it's a legal copy of Windows you're trying to load?

Are you sure it's a legal copy of Windows you're trying to load?
Yes, it was preinstalled and the laptop was bought from John Lewis.
It's still under guarantee so will the software be covered?

Get it back to john lewis, they'll sort it for you if its still in warranty.

It's going back this week.
I phoned to their after sales person who told me my first port of call was Toshiba!!!
I think not............I bought it from JL not Toshiba ..sale of goods act and all that:suspect:

The JL branch is NOT in Sheffield by the way.

JL set it back to factory settings by pressing f8 repeatedly and selecting recovery/restore.

It must have been the only option in f8 that I hadn't seen/tried :gag:
I will now make a repair /recovery disc on first start up so I never have to go thro' this again. (a 120 mile round trip to JL)

reformat...

The "back to factory settings" wipes the disc of all data.
Isn't this a reformat?
The O/S is pre installed and it's not possible, other than buying another copy of Vista, to reformat the way you do with XP or W98.

Hello,

Just found your post, my toshiba laptop has also started doing the exact same thing. It was working fine, then we switched it on an hour later and just get the same responce you originally posted. I've pressed f8 and got the "Advanced Boot Options" but it doesn't seem to bring up a recovery/restore option. i have the following to choose from:
Repair Your Computer - Tried and not worked
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable low-resolution video (640x480)
Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)
Directory Services Restore mode - Was going to try this but it does say for windows domain controllers only?? Not sure what this means.
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Disable driver signature Enforcement
Start Window normally - Doesn't work

Can anyone let me know which one i should go on? Going to find my receipt out and take it back to the shop as recommended to davyboy but wanted to try and get it sorted myself if i could.

Thanks
Stella

Providing you've got the receipt you can take it to any branch of John Lewis. They're normally really good with such problems and you're unlikely to have to argue your case.

It sounds like a driver issue. I'd be inclined to try 'Last Known Good Configuration' from the F8 boot options list; that's the one most likely to get you back running successfully.

Sella1,
I took the laptop Back to JL, who got it back to the factory settings which of course lost everything on the HD, which in my daughter's case didn't matter.
He wrote the following for me in case it happens again.
Switch on, press f8 repeatedly, select "repair my computer",enter password if any, and then select the desired option, recovery/restore etc.
The whole process took an hour and as it was under guarantee cost nothing.
EDIT. I have burned two restore DVDs just in case!
