Is it true that newer/certain motherboards will only run on Vista and won't accept XP?

No, it's likely there will be XP drivers available for any motherboard around at the moment.

Right. It's just that I got a new build from a local place yesterday and was told initially that I could have any system on it. I wanted to stick with XP which he told me was fine, but when I went to pick it up was told because of new type M/Board he could only put Vista on as he had tried XP and it didn't work.

Who was it, just so I know to avoid buying from them? Hes talking out his arse. Let me guess-Vista cost you more than XP would have?

There is an element of truth in what he was saying. My dad bought a motherboard which took dual and quad core chips and no matter how much we tried with standard xp it just wouldn't install whatsoever in fact it bluescreened each and every time.

Using windows xp sp2 cured the problem instantly so see if that works.

Hope that helps.

Depends what you're installing from, you'll be able to get XP on there you may just need to find some drivers first and slipstream them in to the installation.

Thanks for the above info, I shall relay that back to the shop. Pc has now refused to boot up due to "Bad Bios". Not going to bad mouth where I got it from as it could be just teething probs so will see what happens tomorrow.

Sounds like he means that the old copy of XP he has wouldn't install. As already stated XP with SP2 should work on pretty much anything, also a new OEM copy, or other copy with SP3 included will work.

If you're setting up a RAID array you'll still need RAID drivers on floppy when installing XP (Vista lets you use a flash drive), but just saying "no XP won't work I've tried it" really does prove he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

Hmm Parson Cross, was that the "One Stop PC Shop" place that's still open? The guy who used to run their Chapeltown shop was really clueless...

This is why I don't trust small backstreet computer shops, PC World et al may have their faults, but at least they don't talk out of their arse like this guy.
