Did anyone else get stopped by Police when entering Cineworld at Centertainment on Friday evening, around 6:15pm? Just walked through the doors and they requested we went through their metal detector, didn't tell me what is was there for.

They were testing it out on site that evening, and as it began raining they sought somewhere else to run the trial of it, so we said they could set it up inside the building.

It was not any form of comment about our customers, purely a test of the device as a matter of site security to see how they work, what they do, etc.

The big question is......did the alarm go off when you walked through? :)

Why is it worrying if it discourages people from carrying weapons ?

I would never go to a cinema that required security to enter.

yeah me and my g/f went and got stopped, i asked them and they said that it is a thing that they are doing all over sheffield, they are randomly popping up at places and setting them up, its only meant to be for one nyt at a time and not a perminant thing. thats wot the police said anyway

For those of you can't work it out for themselves....

If there is security on the entrance it is there a)because they are testing it, or b)because there is a perceived risk.

If there is a perceived risk of say, stabbings and shootings, at a cinema, would you want to go there?

For similar reasons, I tend to stay away from pubs with bouncers and security staff inside. They're not there for window dressing, they're there in case something kicks off, and there's a risk that it will. I'd rather go somewhere were the risks are much lower. They aren't hard to find.

I'd call the thought police again if I thought it was worth it. But I think once is enough for one night.

Its not the fact about not wanting to go through a metal detector, but why is it necessary. Does that mean there's been a stabbing before or someone waving weapons around I would consider avoiding because it must be there for a reason.

people are stabbed/shot in a variety of places using the metal detectors is just a way of combatting this and making public places safer.

how do you go on at airports? would you decide to still get on a plane if there were no security the way there is metal detectors/x ray machines etc

This really shouldn't bother you if you have nothing to hide.

Sadly knives no doubt. A sad sign of the times.

I'd be worried about going to a cinema which needed protection from knife crime. I would choose to go to one of the many others which don't need a police search to enter.

Did none of you read this, from someone who works there:

Or this, from someone who bothered to ask the police who were there:

but where it will stop why not the local tesco etc

in certain places such as airports you accept it as part of modern times

but are you really trying to validate your argument by equating an airport with visitng the cinema ?

the debate has moved on from the initial post cosy wolf

some are justifying metal detectors in almost any situation

precisely hence the police are testing them out at various locations in these modern times some people walk around with knifes wherever they go

I wold have refused to enter the cinema and asked to see the manager to ask why he wanted the police treating his customers as potential criminals.

I was down there on Friday night between about 6.45 - 7.15 pm and watched this "security" taking place.

Having been through many airport controls i watched and laughed!

Most people, MOST people, were asked to walk through the "sensor" and many "bleeped".

When the entry was clogged up...many people walked on by without having to walk through the sensor as the Police were preoccupied.

FEMALE SEARCHES: Females bags/handbags were taken off them afore they walked through the censor.....now the bags were never searched or screened..Hmmm do not females carry weapons??

BLEEPED PEEPS: Everyone that bleeped were asked to remove; belts, buckles, boots with buckles etc etc etc
When they had removed most of these items and still "bleeped" they were laughingly "waved" through!

Throughout the 1/2 hour I watched (whilst waiting to pick someone up from the cinema) I thought...what is the point?? It seemed to be a half hearted operation ......and certainly they did not "screen" everyone.

I think that this type of operation, unfortunately, is a sign of the times, but I would have been more comforted that my family were entering a place of entertainment with a more thorough and rigourous approach.

I also thought at the time....have they had problems there before? is that why they feel the need to use this screening? But then again it was haphazard..

I'd be worried about going to a cinema which needed protection from knife crime. I would choose to go to one of the many others which don't need a police search to enter.

I am wondering whether to cancel my booked transAtlantic cruise; I hear they carry lifeboats and do emergency drills. Now they wouldn't do that unless they thought the ship might sink or catch fire, so I'll wait till I can get one with no lifeboats and no crew emergency drills.

(No dafter than what you said)

Alastair
17-03-2009, 00:23
I work at sea so I know all about emergency drills and lifeboats. I do emergency training for all eventualities and I see the need for them. It's proven that they save lives.

I also accept the need for strict security whilst flying. It makes me angry that I have to go through all that indignity, but I direct my anger at the nutters who hijack planes and fly them into buildings.

Now we get to cinemas. Why should I accept being searched on entering a cinema? It's not a place which suffers from deadly emergencies, or from terrorist attacks. I have never heard of any stabbing in a cinema.

So why should I allow myself to be searched when I go to Cineworld?

Would equipment used for illegal recording of releases contain enough metal to set them off, just wondered seen as nobody's mentioned it yet...?
