my laptop recently started playing up, not showing what i typed. it now appears that my Fn key is stuck on. so when i press fn, i get the letters i want, but if i don't, then i get numbers. for example, if i press the i key without holding down fn i get 5. any ideas? the sentence i like chips, without holding down the fn key becomes 5 352e ch5-s. which is a shame, as i really like chips.

get a thinish paintbrush, scrub down the edges see if its bunged up, if not i dunno tbh, laptop keyboards are difficult to mend, might be a repairshop jobbie

Sounds like NUM LOCK is stuck on. Have you pressed FN and the appropriate function key (usually F11) to turn it off?
I feel so daft. How could I have missed that??
Thanks alchresearch.

I get that question asked about once a day! Teachers seem to do it all the time!
