Proper supermarket! i think you are confused. Sarkysod 14-03-2009, 19:05 Totally agree, The Lidl near me is fine if all you want is second rate eurotrash food with even worse service. Lidl is cheap for a reason and you will soon find out! carosio 14-03-2009, 20:49 Its good but you have to be selective-I buy large plain yoghurts 49p, tinned salmon steak 1.19p, cucumbers 49p and so on, but beware produce like broccoli and spring onions as they sometimes keep them too long. They have an excellent non-food range which is updated every week. Squiggs 14-03-2009, 20:52 Can someone give me a crash course in German so I can read all the product ingredients? Where Arnold Laver used to be, right before the Heely (Meersbrook) Retail Park is it still going to be a lidl only the sign that said another lidl store has gone Yes. I think its just construction is about to come to an end in about 6 to 8 weeks time. It might be chavy, but having the Lidl is better than shopping at the overpriced Somerfield or having to hike up to the Co-Op on Richards Road to get some milk past 8pm. scargill 15-03-2009, 13:20 [QUOTE It might be chavy, but having the Lidl is better than shopping at the overpriced Somerfield or having to hike up to the Co-Op on Richards Road to get some milk past 8pm.[/QUOTE] I dont think Lidle open beyond 8pm, so the hike will still be on Dizzyblonde 15-03-2009, 13:43 sometimes its easier to shop places that dont give that much choice. saxon51 15-03-2009, 13:56 Can someone give me a crash course in German so I can read all the product ingredients? OlDog 16-03-2009, 11:58 Does anybody know why they have built what appears to be three main buildings? As far as I'm aware supermarkets are generally contained within on e building.... Are they planning on letting them to other retailers? The Idler 16-03-2009, 12:15 sometimes its easier to shop places that dont give that much choice. Exactly. I don't need to choose between 15 types of apple pies. I don't need to pay for the supermarket to obtain, unpack, heat, light and dispose of 15 types of pie. As long as the one pie they have is decent then everyone's a winner. I love Lidl, you just have to try things, and remember which ones are worth buying again. alternageek 11-04-2009, 20:11 Does anybody know why they have built what appears to be three main buildings? As far as I'm aware supermarkets are generally contained within on e building.... Are they planning on letting them to other retailers? Yes there are signs outside saying there is space for rent for other shops. LIDL will be in the big one and extra retail space in the other. BTW does anyone know when this officially opens?? And if they are hiring and training on site or training at another shop? Claire18 19-04-2009, 10:52 There is a sign at the Little London Road side of the store saying it will open in "Autumn 2009". That seems a bit wrong to me when the site looks ready now. ormester101 19-04-2009, 12:08 was told may moodibloos 07-06-2009, 13:13 It will open this Thursday, 11th June. Don't let em get you down! Lidl isn't so cheap anyways compared with the other supermarkets, although their balsam tissues are extremely cheap - ideal for me since I have terrible hayfever!!! At the mo I get the from the Rotherham store when I have to visit there for work! Now I can just pop in when I am off to the gym! Angela P 07-06-2009, 19:35 WHY is everybody slagging lidl off and saying its for chavs thats pathetic at the end of the day we all have to live and if it wasent for lidl it would be a masive treck for me down to hillborough up a big hill on way back which when you have a little baby aswell and i live on a very very tight budget like most of us dosent make me a chav Well said,I am sick of seeing the word chav applied to anyone who does not drive a 4x4.I am greatly looking forward to shopping at the new Lidl,it's about time we had a decent foodstore in this area. missflirtuk 07-06-2009, 21:18 I shop at Lidl sometimes and I am far from a 'chav'. I think people just enjoy writing the word chav. It is the closest supermarket to me and like mummysaz I have a 11 month old daughter and I don't wish to trek for ages to find a supermarket with a teething grouchy baby in tow. Lidl is a good shop and like a previous post says, it is not as cheap as some supermarkets. I would rather shop somewhere like Lidl and have some money spare but have a full fridge and cupboards, rather than having to pay bus fare to get to somewhere like Hillsbrough or Town. And then spending way more than what I would do. I prefer just going to the shops and buying what I actually need but if I go to Hillsbrough or Town, they have baby clothes and then I end up buying more clothes for my daughter than she doesn't actually need :hihi:. So Lidl is a good local shop and stops me spending money that I really don't need to spend. So Lidl is not a 'chav' supermarket as you put it, can you actually brand a supermarket 'chavvy'? carosio 07-06-2009, 21:37 Lidl, Halifax Rd; the car park usually hosts some very posh cars. A friend, who used to meet up with work colleagues in Sainsburys car park on Archer Rd, has witnessed Aldi customers switching their shopping into Sainsbury bags as they loaded the car! Can you brand a supermarket 'chavvy'? As previous, I don't think Lidl is, but as a student I worked for Kwiksave, and that place was 'chavvy' before chavs even existed! Ha! Honestly - God, I saw some right stuff working there... As Alan Bennett once wrote, I touched life at many points! Lady Star 07-06-2009, 21:59 Lidl, Halifax Rd; the car park usually hosts some very posh cars. A friend, who used to meet up with work colleagues in Sainsburys car park on Archer Rd, has witnessed Aldi customers switching their shopping into Sainsbury bags as they loaded the car! Switching bags? That's weird, since you could bag them in other brands bags in store, but funny! SENSIBLE-BUS 07-06-2009, 23:26 Lidl, like many continentaly based supermarkets sell a different range of products. Some are well suited to the u.k. and others are not. Just because the product may not meet with the approval of some customers, it does not mean it is a bad product. These shops would soon stop selling them if they were not being purchased. As has been said previously, it is a case of try it and see. Some of the products are very acceptable to Me, others are not so. The ones I like may not be the ones others like. I do not however think that they are bad, they are just not to my taste. There are plenty products in Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda etc that I do not like either. duckweed 08-06-2009, 08:43 I get a wide range of fresh fruit from Lidl. You don't need to know German to recognise an advocado. I can read enough German and French to read the contents and instructions if necessary but I never had to. Seems pretty chavvy to me to not like a supermarket because it originates from the EU. I am greatful for this supermarket in Chesterfield Road as it will cut my costs considerably both what I buy and the travelling costs too. I occasionally go to other supermarkets such as Tescos Sainsburys and Morrisons and am always shocked how much I have to pay for the same type of goods I buy in Lidl. Lidl are even better these days since they started selling fair trade and organic goods. They also do reasonably priced free range chicken and eggs. brianthedog 08-06-2009, 13:55 I like Lidl, and I'm very fussy about food - quality, origin etc... Great place, and generally far better quality than own brand supermarket food. Tesco have recognised the threat, hence creating all those duff discount brands that sound like you'd see them in Lidl or Aldi. I'll be shopping in the new Lidl - mainly for cured meats, pickles and their jam. Also find their fruit and veg worth a look. Although I wouldn't turn my nose up at anything they stock, just because of where it's being sold. wwcrazy 08-06-2009, 14:07 It's local to me, so will be having a trip down for a nosey on Thursday:) Badgergirl 08-06-2009, 14:29 I'm just glad there will now be cheese choice within walking distance. Squiggs 16-06-2009, 19:54 Lidl, Halifax Rd; the car park usually hosts some very posh cars. A friend, who used to meet up with work colleagues in Sainsburys car park on Archer Rd, has witnessed Aldi customers switching their shopping into Sainsbury bags as they loaded the car! I just took Sainsbury's bags to Lidl this evening :hihi: To be honest, Lidl/Netto/Aldi all fall short for me because I don't eat meat. And whilst the veg all seems OK in Lidl unlike Queens Road Netto, the things like Soya Mince/Veggie Sosages etc aren't there, where they are in Sainsburys. No soya marge/milk or anything like that. So for anyone who is veggie or vegan, it's not somewhere to do a full weekly shop. But then, Lidl is right between In a Nutshell and Zeds, and Beanies is only a short detour from work so it just will mean a little re-arranging of my shopping habits if Lidl passes the test... The test will be the staple groceries - beer and vino! The lager seems OK, the bitter, well, it's cheap bitter but they do stock some ales (who the hell would be daft enough to buy Swiggys now?). Will test the wine a little later, certainly passes the price test, as long as it's not vinegar..... Bizzare world of electrical goods.....HDMI full-size DVD player for £19.99 - bargain. But I didn't buy one....because the HDMI cable wasn't included. They sell them, but for £4.99. Maybe I just look at things the wrong way but I couldn't bring myself to accept the logic of paying 25% of the cost of a complex piece of electronic laser computer gadgetry, for the bit of wire to plug it into the gogglebox. carosio 16-06-2009, 21:11 Squiggs - you're right, you have to shop around to obtain the best value, but they have many good products at good prices, eg; plain yogurt, frozen veg, dried fruit, cheese, tinned pulses, try their cheese pizzas. I don't buy; tinned beans (too salty), muesli (all added sugar), sliced meat (re-formed, and if anyone's unsure what that process is then please do a bit of research on web!) In fact the good old salt and sugar spoils many of their products, but that can be said of all the supermarkets. Squiggs 16-06-2009, 21:29 My cats like it though..... Usually when I "do a shop" I come home with some reformed ham or similar for them, since my not eating meat means no leftover treats etc... but since it was so cheap they had some gammon tonight. Still can't stand the smell in the kitchen from grilling it....ack! (Not sure on meat food hygiene as never cooked any in my life so figured even for moggies, coking it was better than risking giving it them raw/par-cooked) But they thought all their Christmases had come at once with the tea they had as a treat...but I still have 1/2 of it left and at the price of tinned food for a meal, can't complain at the price. Hetty 17-06-2009, 08:05 ..............I heard that staff have to pay their own tax and insurance, can anyone comment on that? Seems a bit far fetched to me. shuwarrior51 17-06-2009, 08:20 Well me and the missus' went on the weekend and thought it was rather excellent. Meat and Vegetables/Fruit seem to be incredibly cheap. They have whole chickens for £1.98 which i wouldn't buy but they have free range whole chickens for £3.98 which is great avlue in my eyes. Social Stigma's and all that....but now i'm an adut shopping for myself it seems daft to not buy the same food cheaper. Lady Star 17-06-2009, 11:23 ..............I heard that staff have to pay their own tax and insurance, can anyone comment on that? Seems a bit far fetched to me. Can't see that being the case - you only have to do this when you work for yourself - who'd be a freelance supermarket worker? Also, freelance workers set their own rates 9/10 - I wonder if they get far higher wages than the UK shops though? When I worked in a shop as a kid, Netto and Aldi paid about £2 more an hour than the UK supermarkets... I went home made my ciabatta bread cooked my chicken and made a great salad and thought what exactly do you want from a supermarket if it isn't this? According to some of the people in this thread the food is expensive rubbish. Not sure where they were. Not a lot of brand names that is true but I've never been one for brand names. But then I don't buy ready meals as I prefer to know what I'm eating. I agree there should be more vegetarian options. I'd like a bigger range of bread but the oven bake french bread aint bad and there's a variety of sliced bread. I like the themed weeks. Italian week Greek week American week. I'm astonished at what they sell venison, pheasant, crayfish, squib. Not sure I want to cook any of that but you can't say they don't do variety. What is it that gets some people so uptight about it? I suppose it is like when I owned a shop. I found a supplier who supplied very cheap jeans but I couldn't do my usual mark up because if I priced them that cheap no one would buy them. Some fools seem to think the more money you pay the better quality you get. Consequently some companies charge high prices for rubbish and the buyer goes home with a smug smile on their face. I will buy anywhere if the price is right. I don't go by how high the price. I buy my fruit and veg with care so I get the best quality. Not hard to do. Same with meat, or anything else. lyndix 22-06-2009, 08:29 Not from what it says on the flyer thing - check the top of right hand page as you open up each spread. well what a load of crap!!
