Inspired by JohnnyM. Didn't want to take the thread off topic so thought I'd make a new one.

What do you think to the current format, and how do you think it should be?

Would you like to see it with chapions ONLY?

How about Champions of the leagues AND domestic cup winners? That way, all of the entrants are Champions of some kind...

How about the 4 clubs from each nation with the greatest turnover and global fanbase?

I'd like to see only the Champions and FA Cup winners enter the competition.

And while we're on this subject, can we please do away with the League Cup?

Revert back to the days of old.

Champions League - champions of each league ONLY

UEFA Cup - for the next 3/4 in the division depending on country.

Bring back the Cup Winners Cup with possibly 2 places for each country, thus for England FA Cup and League Cup.

I like the idea of the FA cup winners getting in instead of the 4th placed team.

If you look at this season, Man United will probably finish 20 points ahead of Arsenal/Villa which I think is crazy, and just strengthens Rathbons argument that the Premier league is about ********ed.

I see what you're saying, but what happens when Scunthorpe go on a good run and win the FA Cup? Surely 4th place in the Prem is better than a one off FA Cup win?

Aye that's a fair point as well - but then again I reckon if a small club went and won the FA cup who's to say they don't deserve a crack at the CL - maybe a few more small clubs could be set up for life with the financial benefits it would bring.

I'm not disagreeing with you by any means - it's a tricky one isn't it.

It is a tough one. I'm a Villa fan, and even I think that 4th place shouldn't get a place in the Champions League.

Just by having so many places, it is devaluing the FA Cup. Many teams are treating it like a 'Mickey Mouse' competition nowadays. I wasn't surprised when MOL fielded a 2nd string side against CSKA Moscow.

We need to reduce the amount of teams in the Champions League, and bring back some pride to the UEFA cup.

As for the Cup Winners Cup. I'm not too sure if that is a good idea or not. I think 2 European competitions is probably enough.

Spyro, you have to remember that I am old school and long for the days of that 3 week period in May each year where there was a European final on each Wednesday night. They should make the UEFA cup final 2 legged again while we are at it!

I reckon they should do away with teams dropping into the UEFA cup after the group stages of the CL. Once you are knocked out of a cup that's it, no 2nd chances. That way the teams in the group stages might compete better as they will have nothing to fall back on and the bigger teams will have to use full strength squads more often.

The only problem at the minute is that the 3rd placed team in the groups drop down to the UEFA cup. I wouldn't want it just to go back to the Champions of each nation it was not as exciting as it is now. This whole whinge that the Premiership teams are in there now because of the money doesn't really hold much water anyway. It's quite plausable that next season Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal could have different managers and do nothing in competition- it's all about stability that's why AC Milan have done so well over the past 10 years in it. Look at the other teams who are contending with the Premiership sides: Inter have a new manager, Juve have only just got back into Seria A, Real Madrid are a mess of a club, Bayern have a new manager, Porto are from a relativly financially poor league. Even Barca have a new manager and they are the biggest threat. Stability is the key.

The Champions League, in it's current format, is fine. It's a lot more exciting than it used to be. It could just do with a few tweaks.

I'm not a big fan of the 3rd placed team dropping into the UEFA Cup - although I don't know if this is to change next season with the introduction of the Europa Cup. Once you're out of a competition there shouldn't be any second chances.

I also don't like the country protection rubbish they have in place for the group stages and the first knockout round.

I'm surprised Platini hasn't scrapped this yet with the Premier League teams begin to dominate the competition.

The Champions league is fine as it is, its brilliant and so good to watch the later it goes on the more exciting it gets.
