View Full Version : Drive carefully now - speed cameras Chesterfield Road
FTI. For anyone thinking of committing the cardinal motoring sin and speeding on the Chesterfield road by that notorious accident blackspot, the Graves Park top gate, don't. The mobile SCAM van is working there this afternoon.
So kill your speed etc...
MuteWitness 27-06-2005, 15:13 thanks i will make sure its well sign posted!
Here's a better idea. . DON'T FRIKKIN SPEED IN THE FIRST PLACE!
No speeding = no ticket. . simple!
Refer to initial post. I believe it reads somewhere along the lines of "don't go speeding now". But without the wet half-swear word. So what's your idea better than, Munk? It's a hot day, but no need to start up the "wooooooh, speeding the only wrong in the motoring book you're all evil if you con't do the crime you won't get booked thunder organ".
I'm just doing my bit to protect people from the danger of speeding motorists, and making sure they're all as good a citizen as yourself.
MuteWitness 27-06-2005, 16:02 well as theres no sign on that road which is illegal they shouldnt be there

Dont they say that accidents are more likely to increase at a speed camera due to the fact that your either hitting your brakes or watching your speedo???
Even the SY Camera partnership have no problem with people knowing where there cameras are
PS Thank joyphil

Yes, people who have bees in their bonnet about safety cameras do say that - but it isn't true.
well as theres no sign on that road which is illegal they shouldnt be there
Myth.
by that notorious accident blackspot, the Graves Park top gate,
I've been to a couple of collisions on this section of road that could be attributed to excessive speed. Just because you don't see the accidents, it doesn't mean they don't happen.
This is also an approach to a pedestrian crossing to a park, which is naturally going to attract children.
South Yorkshire are OK when operating safety cameras - they don't take the mick!

The rozzers will be delighted with this road atlas, they'll be hiding they mobiles about half a mile along from the fixed cameras and raking it in :D

MuteWitness 27-06-2005, 17:33 it mentions the popular mobile camera destinations aswell
miwinter 28-06-2005, 07:35 Yeah.. and if you were the girl in the black Ford Ka last night, driving up Chesterfield Rd past Graves Park at Meadowhead, at about 6:30pm, gassing on your mobile phone as we came up to the mobile police speed trap complete with police van... that was me in the car infront who turned round and warned you to get off the phone, saving you a hefty on-the-spot fine... ;) lol :D
Why bother to warn her? People who chatter on their phone while driving deserve everything they get.
miwinter 28-06-2005, 08:37 I did think that too... would have been harsh though. We were crawling at 5 mph for 2 miles, so I let her off. I can't stand people who drive along normally though and still insist on using their phone with no legal handsfree

Tom Tom GPRS software can do this for you as well. It also warns you of the areas popular for mobile speed cameras.
It's not just people using their mobile phones whist driving, what about drivers who eat and smoke. I know this is not illegal, but surely it's still a distraction?

its illegal to eat but not smoke. but i agree with you. you cannot have full control with a fag in your hand
EDIT: looked it up apparently not illegal to eat but i was told it was by driving instructor:loopy:
Well, there was that sorry case of the lady done for nibbling on a Mars bar while driving. The Dibble pinned her for driving without due care if I recall correctly. Which seems a bit rich given the boxes of donuts their colleagues in the USA have sat on the passenger seats. But for all we know she may have been driving in what I affectionately call the Sheffield Style, which entails a total lack of attention to mirrors and utter ignorance of the fact that cars nowadays come equipped with indicators.
But eating and smoking? Surely this has to be one of the most appalling combinations of in-car activities ever invented. Cigarettes make all food taste awful (with the dishonourable exception of cheesy Doritos and Ginsters sandwiches, which are actually improved with an infusion of Berkely Menthol).

and passengers, they're a distraction, so should be banned forthwidth.
And stereos, people drive along merrily pressing buttons, changing channel, swapping the cd, i'm suprised it's not total carnage. The only solution is to make car stereo's illegal. Maybe we can have passenger and stereo cameras, we wouldn't want the police to actually have to do something when we could automate after all.

Too true !!
I know several drivers who are quite unable to listen/talk to a front seat passeneger without looking at them whilst doing so, and see plenty more on the road.
They're usually the ones who have to be reminded when the lights turn green or have turned red, forget to indicate on roundabouts, run into the back of stationary vehicles etc.
Beats me how they ever passed their driving test, - it should be an automatic failure if they do the same with the examiner
We followed a girl into town one Saturday morning and it took her from Wednesday's ground to halfway up Netherthorpe Road to get her make-up on and brush her hair :loopy:
I personally think that for speed cameras to work, there needs to be one on every single road. That way nobody could ever get away with speeding.
Another point, I don't know how accurate speed cameras are, but I've just got a new car. Prior to this I had a Renault Clio and the speedometer needle wobbled frantically, it also over read by about 5mph.
This was a real problem, when I swapped cars the salesman said someone bought in a Clio like mine the day before, with the same problem.
I do hope speed cameras allow a bit either way of the speed limit as everyone's speedo must be slightly different.
I'm still waiting for them to put cameras up in our village. I'm fed up with people racing well over 30mph.
Actually cameras should get people who tailgate others, fail to signal, drive along the road with their heads at 45 degrees talking to passengers, AND those who can't do the speed limit - yes those people that do 25mph in 40mph zones.

It's a speed LIMIT, not a speed TARGET.

I was always taught it was dangerous to underspeed, and I know for a fact you fail if you don't do an appropriate speed on your test (first time here!) Doing 20 in a 30 will fail you on your test.
I was taught to do the speed limit too, otherwise you can fail your test for incompetence. People that drive way under the limit cause traffic jams - similar to when you get stuck behind a tractor etc, you can't always pass easily.
Hook got it right with the word 'appropriate'.
That still doesn't mean that the speed limit is a target. Unfortunately, most people seem to think that those 30 mph signs are mandatory.
True, a speed limit is not a target, but people should not drive way below it on a straight road. Perosnally, I think a lot of speed limits are wrong in this country. There's a main road near Worksop with loads of houses on one side - it should be 30mph but it's the national Speed limit, everyone agrees that the speed limit should be lowered.

he didn't say people that drive lower than the limit when appropriate, he said people that can't as in, cannot. They drive around at 60% of whatever the limit is, all the time, or worse, they drive around at 40mph whatever the limit is (including 30 limits).
Most speedo's overread, far safer for the car companies, they're unlikely to be sued because someone was going 5mph lower than they thought, whereas 5mph higher could land them in court.
speed cameras should be set at a limit of 10%+2 according the ACPO guidelines.
