I think the myth about students from Sheffield University being snobby is just that. As a Hallam student i enjoy the banter between the universities of us being as thick as **** and they being upperclass snobs. In reality neither is true and its just students playing up to stereotypes. Im sure you will encounter some snobby people at university but your also bound to meet some really cool down to earth people that will become good friends. Im sure you will enjoy University i know i do. Sheffield is great and from the looks of it will improve as you progress through university.

Any queries about the city just feel free to PM me.

Bleedin' 'ell, if you thought Sheffield was snobby you obviously didn't go for a look round Oxford and Cambridge then!

Agree with Gilly. There are obviously a few students who live up to the stereotypes - snobs at UoS and thicko's at Hallam, but the majority of it is just banter.

Although there is a big rivalry between the two - especially at Varsity (which by the way Hallam won again this year    )

You'll have fun though definately!

Sheffield Uni is okay, so long as you can deal with all the artsy, archeologist (sp) types, studying greek or whatever and whose sworn enemy is a bar of soap.

no disrespect to the cleaning fraternity of sheffield, but your experiences of the place on a non academic basic is not helping the poor lad/lass.

I also attended UoS, and do remember your highly buffed floors fondly.

I spent three very happy years as a student at the UoS and didn't find it at all snobby.

I guess it depends on your course etc, as to the types of people you'll meet, but Sheffield is a great city to study and live in, and I'm sure you'll have a great time, and meet plenty of different types of people.

Well I've been there a year now (UoS) and it certainly isn't snobby. Like anywhere, you'll find all sorts. Most of my friends are far from snobbish, in fact if anything else most of the fall at the other end of the 'social scale' as it were. You'll meet loads of great people, from various backgrounds.

Hiya

Please don't worry about coming to The University of Sheffield , I work here and its great and the students love it. Its really friendly and there is loads to do and its one of the best universities around.

Its honestly not snobby, and I'd advise you to feed this back to them if you think it may be putting students off.

I hope you have a fab time!

x:thumbsup:

Do you know which Hall of Residence have you been allocated to?

I think a few years ago a lof of Sheffield Uni students used to really "look down" on the Hallam (or then POLY) students. I recall when the 2 lots of students did not mix at all well together for the reasons that Sheffield Uni students were definitely mainly upper to basic middle class, while the general consensus of 'Poly' students was middle to upper working class, if you can still use those crazy social distinctions these days....

In 2005 there really is little main dfference between the social backgrounds and cultural identities of both Universities in Sheffield.......it has somewhat levelled out. Although SHU seems to attract a higher intake of Asian and ethnic minority students, but this does not necessarily have any bearing on the class system.

hi, I went to Sheffield Uni and had some of the best years of my life. oh and by the way I'm an archaeologist and not too keen on washing.

In my first year I was in halls and found most of the people in my corridor a bit snobbish. But I think that was more a cultural difference as I was brought up in Africa. I had a friend who was working class and he found it hard to fit in, though I think this said more about him than the people he was mixing with. However by the time I got to my second year in self-catering, I didn't encounter any snobbery at all. By that point I think people had grown up and were more accepting of others. Besides the university is so big, if you don't like one crowd, look elsewhere. There are always niches and groups with tastes and values the same as your own.

Good Luck!

I was going to say you've obviously met the wrong archaeologists, but then you have met me!!!
Maybe I'm just an oddbod.... I just don't fit the stereotype of your average archaeologist/student :(

Hi bjshooter,
I went to uni in Newcastle and left after one year because it was just too snobby. I came to Sheffield and loved the fact that people were just normal, not snobby or anything! I loved it, its a great uni, totally down to earth and not Rah at all. You will have a great time.

And I bet you were drinking in a Hull University bar:)

I never looked down at the Humberside students. There were some thick sods at Hull so I can only assume that Humberside had its share of brainboxes.

I've been at Sheffield Uni this year after completing my BA at Kent and I would say the people I've met at Sheffield are by far the friendliest. The only people I've had problems with are some jumped up rich girls in my halls who strut round like they own the place. But you get those everywhere!

Not as bad as the arrogant sporty types, whose sworn enemy is anyone less physically adept than them.

Yeah, I had some bad experiences in Halls.... but if it hadn't been for this one absolute B45T4RD making my life a misery I'd have really enjoyed it.

I think, bjshooter, you'll really enjoy Sheffield, the people (mostly), the place and the uni are all fab. I guess RichD and I aren't the only ones who've had bad experiences with people in halls, but there will always be people who are used to being spoilt at home and are completely socially inept and unable to interact with others away from home unless they are putting you down. BUT that is not a reflection on the city, or Sheffield Uni, it's just a sad fact of all unis. You'll really enjoy it here though. And just remember everyone you meet is in the same boat!

Humberside students (and I mean the entire lot) used to get banned from Hull Union every few months :D

Hull Uni had some of the most architypal students I've ever seen.
