View Full Version : Stopping "slide by" adverts?
Sorry if this has been discussed before.
We used to have pop ups which were annoying as hell. Then we all got pop up blockers. Problem solved.
But now, every web site I go to, I will start to read a paragraph, and a large sliding advert will come wooshing in and swirl around and around bloking my view.
It's so annoying.
I am tempted to make a list of the main offenders (Barclays, Crazy frog (!!!!!), and boycott their products).
But I was wondering, does software exist that could stop these slide by adverts for good?
Also what are they actually called as I just made the 'slide by' name up.
Get Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/). There is only one site I know of that gives me any grief with slide by\popup\popunder adverts, but that's it.
Phanerothyme 27-06-2005, 11:34 And then get the AdBlocker (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=10&application=firefox) extension.
Any site you visit regularly, just right click on the ads and block them, never to be seen again. It blocks Iframes, javascript, img tags and everything else that FF doesn't block out of the box.
Essential stuff
The Ad free internet is around the corner!
I've not seen one of those, but according to some people on here, Norton is a nightmare
Turn javascript off. This also has the added side effect of disabling those crappy anti-leech right click stuff that sites put on.

The ads are what fund a lot of the content. The ad free internet would also be a content free internet!

Don't be dense.
The internet had plenty of content before commercial interests even knew it existed.
For me there's plenty of high quality ad free content too. Which is why I won't download ads on other sites that offer free high quality content.
I don't remember seeing any ads using gopher. at all.
I put up with ads from occasionally visited sites, but for anywhere I go regularly, I don't want to waste my bandwidth on them time and time again.
Also, there are plenty of externally loaded ads that cause delays in the page load, something else I don't feel I need to put up with.
But so long as the sad no-marks keep clicking those banners and paying for my content, then I am one happy bunny.
Content that I value, I am happy to pay for. And I do.
Adblocker (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=10&application=firefox)- you know it makes sense

Now they are annoying (El Reg seems to be particuarly strong in the external ads dept.)!
I block them in the hosts file.

Indeed it does (as would the NoScript extension - if it didn't kill my install of FF last time;))!

Phanerothyme 27-06-2005, 19:23 lmhost hack is totally effective, but a pain to adminster.
Perfect for the well known spamservers. I used to edit the hosts file until I got *******.
All we need is one that works for TV and I am a happy man.

******* still has to be told what to block though;). And, utilising the hosts file blocks the crap if you have to use IE (which is sometimes unavoidable).
My current hosts file blocks over 12,000 websites, domains & IPs. I now only update it when an especially annoying ad comes up - or a site tries to install something! The same hosts file is then replicated across our entire network, which is one of the reasons we've had no problems with our internal net!

Along the lines of "Adnix" (fictitious product, from the novel Contact by Carl Sagan)?
Just an instant mute would do for me:thumbsup:.

The internet isn't run by computer science geeks anymore, it's become commercialised. I dare say without advertisers, this very website would cost too much for Geoff to run. I read a lot of the newspaper websites online, but I know full well that if advertisers didn't fund them I'd have to buy them all from the newsagent to read. If everyone blocks all adverts, there'd be a lot more subscription based sites. Personally I'd rather the advertisers fund it.

As I recall the inventor of adnix was a wealthy recluse. (he feared for his life) It operated on one basic feature - the jump in volume when the ads come on.
I think the mute button is pretty effective, all you need to do is combine it with your favourite view, and a window within a window to show you when your proggy restarts.
but the volume jump is no longer a reliable indicator. Time shifting all TV by say 15 minutes and editing out the adverts shouldn't be too hard for a machine to do however.
