I have always thought that goldfish are pretty dumb creatures. They swim from here to there and back again and do very little else. It's generally thought that they have extremely short memories too.

Well we seem to have 2 super fish!!

We have 1 goldfish and one black molly and I swear they play games together! The black molly picks up a load of gravel off the bottom of the tank and holds it in it's mouth. It then swims to the top of the tank and spits it out piece by piece. The goldfish swims underneath and catches each piece in it's mouth and then drops it back on the bottom of the tank. They do this until the molly has spat all the gravel out. At first I thought it was a one off but I have seen them do this several times, as have the kids.

Does anyone else have fish that do strange things? Or is this normal behaviour for fish? I've certainly never seen anything like it before!

Apparantly scientists have realised what fish owners have known for a while - fish are intelligent and certainly don't have a 2 sec memory span.

Goldfish were shown to recognise lights/colours etc associated with feeding and would react to the triggers for food.

Anyone with fish will have seen that they seem to alter their swimming pattern when they are spoken to by a familiar voice and fed. Ok, it doesn't make them the brainiest pets but it does demonstrate they have more going on than most people give them credit for.
