Fawlty Towers are the perfect twelve half hours of comedy, so I remove them from the 'bouquet garni' and look further.

"Ever Decreasing Circles" is one of the deepest, darkest, but funniest British comedies ever. I wouldn't recommend it if you're using Prozac though.

Just in case you're Martin.

"The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin" is another deeply, darkly funny comedy.

"Red Dwarf" was too silly not to be funny ........

Nope, can't really get past "Flay Otters". True, true perfection.

UK / Ireland:
Father Ted
The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin
Faulty Towers

US:
The Phil Silvers Show (Sgt. Bilko)

I seem to remember "Fairly Secret Army" being rather good but haven't seen it since it was on ... CH4, 1982, I think.

The Phil Silvers Show (Sgt. Bilko)

Oh I forgot about Bilko (possibly because of Steve Martin). Bilko was brilliant. Pity you can't buy all but a few episodes of it on DVD.

I like 'Early Doors'. Craig Cash is a good writer. However I think 'Rise and Fall' and 'Rising Damp' are unbeatable. 'Open All Hours' was also top notch.

Fawlty Towers was really special. Nothing to add.

I loved 'Ever Decreasing Circles' - Richard Briers as Martin was a casting gem! 'Mole Valley Valves'. :P

Open All Hours, and Only Fools and Horses are two more of my favourites, and in more recent times Early Doors, The Office and Father Ted.

I enjoyed them all, plus many more, and can't really choose a favourite.

Can I include To The Manor Born?

Otherwise, all the usual suspects: Fawlty Towers, 'Allo, 'allo; Early Doors, Father Ted and one I never tire of watching, Bread.

Cue rant from scousers stating that that series did untold harm to their reputation, that Carla Laine is one nasty, nasty, woman!

Yeah, Bread was a shocking representation of Scousers, portraying us all as thieves and idiototic benefit scroungers who cared about nothing but family.....

.....but heck if it wasn't funny! :)

(NB: Practically everyone I know back in the 'pool enjoyed watching Bread - the only ones who didn't are those without a sense of humour about themselves, and who are ashamed to be Scousers. In other words people from the wirral!!)

Hmmm, what as great about porridge?

well,

the writing,
the acting,
the cast (who just "gelled")
the (usually) gentle humour,
Fletch generally getting one-over on Mr McKay...
The utterly hilarious Ronnie Barker,
and of course, the late-lamented Richard Beckinsale, who was just gorgeous.

My two faves are:

British sitcom - Porridge

And

U.S. sitcom - I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet, but FRASIER. It's one of the wittiest, funniest comedies I've ever seen with a cast of amazing actors, extremely well written episodes and a chemistry between every character.

Rich
10-03-2009, 12:36
Frasier? Sod that, I used to LOVE Roseanne on Channel 4! (and no, I wouldn't), funniest American comedy ever, along with stuff like ALF, the Cosby show, and Different Strokes.. Seriously the Yanks knew how to do good comedy in the 80s.

Great about Porridge ? It was the script wasnt it ?

It was everything. The right mix of witty scripting and great comic timing from the cast. As well as having a bit of a heart to it too.

But all the wife sees is an old comedy from the 70s set in a prison. She always goes and finds something else to do whenever I put it on!

I loved Frasier, but it was a prime example of a series that went on too long. Once Niles and Daphne got together it should have ended, as it was all downhill after that.

Scrubs is another one that has gone on too long now, and even My Name Is Earl has lost the magic and just become formulaic.

Have to admit, though, that i am still enjoying the US Office.

Best British sitcom is 100% Steptoe & Son, I mean considering it one of the first british sitcoms around (I can only think of Hancock before it, and that was by same writers) its amazing how it stands the test of time.

I was watching a few episodes the other night and couldnt believe how little things have changed.

American wise, it has to be Malcolm in the middle

It does sound like a disaster waiting to happen, but the one glimmer of hope is that David Nobbs is involved. I think a sitcom based on the trials and tribulations of modern working life is just as relevant now as it was then, so fingers crossed...

Seeing this clip has reminded me. I read years back that Sally Thomsett (who played Jo in MATH) is a clinical nymphomaniac and that she has an actual compulsion to be having sex ever such a lot. Not sure how true it is.
