yup Mongrels debut album is free with the Independent TODAY.
just listening to it now, its excellent, i like it.

who are they?
Mongrel are a supergroup featuring members of Arctic Monkeys, Revernd and the makers and babyshambles.
the album features loads of uk rappers (in fact one song features 16 rappers) and is produced by Adrian Sherwood of On u sound fame, so theres also a dub feeling in places too.

whats it sound like?
indie (specially rev and the makers stylee)
uk hip hop
dub

and very political

doubt youll like it tbh.....too rappy, a couple of songs with the revs singer do sound like the revs mind.
i love it, so much in fact ive just bought their Menace ep from play.com (my first ever bought "legal" download :) and am going to buy the 2cd version when it comes out.

Mongrels are fabulous dogs: they are healthier and live much longer than pedigree specimens. But that may not apply to this indie supergroup of sorts. It features ex-Arctic Monkeys bass player Andy Nicholson, the band's current drummer, Matt Helders, and members of Reverend and the Makers and Babyshambles, but the lineup promises more than it delivers. Lazy attempts at grime and rapcore are consigned to the doghouse courtesy of some well-meant but terrible political raps. Listen to Mongrel's barking for long enough and it's possible to discern that politicians are "all prostitutes" and there is something awful going on in Bosnia and Darfur. A crustie revival, perhaps? This sounds like one of those terrifying 90s dog-on-a-rope bands - Back to the Planet, or Senser - and it would be an act of kindness to summon a vet to do the decent thing.

1/5 stars

tch at the guardian, its good to get a bit of politics into "pop" music occasionly instead of singing about i love him, he loves me, blah diddly blah all the time.
also i like uk rap where they aint singing about bling and drive bys etc all the time.

but then i liked senser and back to the planet back in 92-94 whatever and i like this too :P gonna listen to it a 5th time today me thinks

and listening back to it, the guardians analogy of the likes of senser and back to the planet is a very lazy analogy.
the rappings very NOW, the indies very NOW and the dubs very NOW too.
the politics is also very NOW

Ah it's ok actually, it's the sort of thing I'd have on in the background rather than sit and listen to but I definitely didn't dislike it just it didn't jump out at me and say boo!
