View Full Version : Run free little one..to the person who hit and run
today whilst going to a walking job i noticed a cat at the side of the road, i stopped and went to see if it was hurt or worse dead, the poor thing was still warm but sadly had died so had obviously been hit recently and had been placed at the side of the road, she had a collar and tag on so i sadly made the call to tell them her fate, the owners disnt answer so after a few enquiries the cats name was recognised and i was pointed to her home, her owner was heartbroken.
I know you dont have to stop for cats, but why stop move the body and not even call when the tag was so obvious, that poor cat had a home, was loved and her owners needed closure, she deserved to go home, i for one know i wouldnt settle if one of mine was missing.
Run free sweetheart and to the heartless person who left her and couldnt even make sure she made it home you make me sick.
this has been an awful end to what has been on the whole a really bad day for me. annax
hennypenny 06-03-2009, 18:42 Poor little thing :(
I would be heartbroken if any of mine were left at the side of the road without me knowing why they weren't coming home. Thank you for making the effort to find the owner, I am sure she was grateful, even if she was upset.
mummysaz21 06-03-2009, 18:45 mine got run over 2 years ago somebody saw a cat layed under car and recognised it as mine they thought he was porley as he hadent moved so i was shouting him as i went up to him, eyes wide open i stroked him and got shock of my life he was stone cold and stiff i was terrified, somebody had run him over and left him, now i know you dont have to stop but surley somebody with a heart wud have
Poor thing, sadly it happens but I agree if there is a way of contacting the owner then it's only fair to try.
Perhaps though, they did call - you called and didn't get through. Not many people would go to the lengths of finding out who the cat belonged to by asking around but giving them the benefit of the doubt - perhaps they did try and couldn't get through either?
Mum hit a cat years ago and was devastated, it ran out from between two cars and she had no chance. It wasn't a residential area and the cat had no tag so she couldn't trace it so instead moved it to the side of the road and tried to make it look asleep so as not to upset people passing by... that was all she could do and now, years later she still says 'oh gosh - this is where I hit that cat'.
One of our cats got run over years ago along with another cat that was chasing her (I don't know if they were playing or fighting) and the driver didn't even bother to move either cat... just left them in the road.
mummysaz21 06-03-2009, 18:54 i found somebody else cat across road from me my mum rang me to come help it as i am the big animal person in my family, i went to this cat it was still alive and its eye was litraly hanging out, i coudled its head and it took its last breaths i then did a search of the dead cats neck found a tag the cats face was litraly smashed up but i still picked the cat up inb a bin liner(not very gracefull i know) and took it to the vets and called owner as i dident have credit, turned out it was sombody i know, now im sorry but why cant other people do this it was heartbreaking to do it and discusting to handle a mangled cat but people need to have a heart, mine was chipped but stil nobody bothered to take him to a vet dead or not, he was the most loving cat loved my dog, everytime i took her for a walk he followed and he came to work every night at nursing home

Truly awful thing for you to find.:(
But I'm so glad you took the time to find her owners and inform them.
I've said thank you to others on this forum who are so caring to call/look for the owners of cats run over.
Our poor cat was run over just a few feet from our home and the person didn't call (it was placed at the side of the road as well) - if they had call we could have been there in less than a minute........... instead I found it later that day.
We also live near the tram stop so goodness knows how many people passed him and didn't call - it's so sad to think of him lying there all day!
So thanks for being so caring!
Our frst cat was run over .She went out one afternoon and was strange she never returned that afternoon, she was just under 1 yr old. The next morning i waited, asked the neighbours if they could check in their garages, sheds etc. Nothing. And it was by chance i went across the road to the lady opposite me as she was a cat lover and had cats to see if shed spotted her, when a passerby heard what i was saying and interrupted to say her neighbour on the next road had actually moved a young cat of the main road, gave me the address and i went round.
She unfortunetly matched my cats description perfectly. She also had heard the accident and went straight out to her to see if she could be saved. iIm so thankful she gave me knowledge that she was killed instantly. The woman even described that she was playing with a black cat, whom i know they were inseperable. That black cat, used to come and see if she was playing out every morning lol.
Im so grateful for that lady to have taken the time to see if she help my cat and although she couldnt, she helped me,
Afterwards the Black cat would come like normal and id sit and talk to her on the garden step. And call me barmy or not but i really think we both grieved together.
R.I.P KIMI, Theres not a day i dont miss you.
djelibeybi 06-03-2009, 23:43 Nothing touches my heart more than someone who acts out of compassion for a pet's owner, even after the pet has passed over.
You're all angels xxx
whitewitch 06-03-2009, 23:55 A cat once ran out on me and my ex as we were driving up Herries Road, I jumped out of the car, ran down the road and picked it up just as a bus came up the hill. I laid the cat on my knee and made my ex drive to Hillsborough vets. It was out of hours so phoned the emergency number, the vet was there in about 10 mins. Unfortunately he put it to sleep, I was heartbroken :(
Rainrescue 07-03-2009, 00:10 Sadly - there are scum in every walk of life - some cats are just unlucky to end their lives - meeting one of them.
I am always shocked when I meet people who really don't have any feelings for any living thing apart from themselves. To them I always say - I hope in the next life you return as the animal or person - ou have harmed.
Surely there must be some justice to all the cruelty
At least hopefully the little one didn't suffer too much
i had a call last night from the lady whom had given me the address of the owner. shed told me of a lady opposite who sometimes fed this cat and id left a card incase i couldnt find owners and at least she could go to someone who loved her, she was pleased id found her family. Its sad how many people were affected by her loss not just her owners but local people to, apparently it was apparent that no attempt had been made by the driver to find her owner as she the lady who called had heard something happen almost seconds before i got there and didnt realise it was a cat as the driver moved off so quickly. annax
Thank you for taking the cat home anna like you say a little act of kindness has made a whole lot of difference to those people.
People can be so heatless.
RIP little one xx
It was good of you to make the call.
I know I would have appreciated it.
jediwarrior 07-03-2009, 13:22 awww poor thing least u stopped anna and did a good thing and located the owner.
MARY POPPINS 07-03-2009, 13:45 So good of you to take the time, to help this little cat, find its owners,I would have been heartbroke but still grateful yo you.
We were driving up our road not long ago and there was acat in the middle of the road whiuch had been knocked down, I made hubby stop his van and go and pick it up, he picked it up with a bin liner then said to me ok so now what are you going to do with it, so we took it home but it didn't have a collar, I asked all the nieghbours but they think I'm mad round here anyway, I'm the only one who has pets,
So I ended up laying him on the grass near my house hoping somebody would be out looking for him, and a couple of hours later a chap came and collected him, if we hadn';t picked him up he would just have squashed in to the road as he was right in the middle.
I've lost so many cats to cars, leukemia, coyote attacks and the like, that I finally decided princess was going to live indoors for life. She never asks to go out, and will not venture out even with the doors wide open. She spends her evenings watching TV sat between my wife and I, and pesters me to go to bed if I stay up after Pauline.
feline01 07-03-2009, 21:19 To the people on here who take the trouble to contact the owner's of Cat's that have been run over I'd just like to say that "you restore a bit of faith" for me.
Last May we had one of our much loved cats run over a minute's walk from our house. Whoever had run him over just left him bleeding in the middle of the road. We only found out as someone on our estate very kindly moved him out of the road, removed his collar and rang us from his home. When he explained where he had laid him we went straight to find him but all we could see was the blood in the road. We rang this guy back and he came down to meet us. It turned out that in the short space of time between him ringing Street Force had picked our cat up. We did get him back and managed to bring him home. He was just 18 months old. His brother still misses him now. So to the scum bag who just left him there to get repeatedly run over. . .remember . . . what goes around comes around.
This was the second time that this had happened to us. In exactly the same place 12 months earlier our beautiful boy was hit by a 4x4. He carried on running into the undergrowth and we didn't find him until a week later. This was due to the fact that I had placed an ad in The Star and a lady rang to say she had witnessed the accident.
I know accident's happen but it's what you do about it afterwards that makes the difference.
Sorry guy's for the long post but the loss of my two boy's in such horrific circumstances still stir's strong feelings.
Thanks

I think that exactly sums it up! It's not just about a dead animal but the distress for the owners too.
By taking a little time to look for ID and minimising the upset, it's doing a great kindness for somebody.
Good on you Anna!
Snagglepuss 08-03-2009, 11:49 Oh poor little one, but how kind of you to trace the owners even when it was not down to you. I would certainly appreciate someone doing that for me if ever the occasion arose. xx

I have to say i feel the same - Ive not lost a cat to a car, but it terrifies me.
I too would do everything possible to find a cats owners - and hope if the worst happens to me someone rings us.
gabzball 08-03-2009, 16:06 It just such an awful thing to see, especially if you see it happen as i saw the same happen last sunday, unfortunately this one did not have a collar or chip. Its so disgusting that someone would just leave it there to die, personally i think they need running over and leaving to die, a little harsh maybe but i love animals! Its also very unfortunate that theres nothing you can do about this as the police just do not care one iota!!
RIP little cat x x
