View Full Version : Im gutted - Evies had 3 teeth out
JarvisCocker 06-03-2009, 10:10 When we got Evie a year ago and I took her for a check up at our vets I was advised that she should have her teeth cleaned under anesthetic. Since then and since we've had her she has had her teeth scraped, she is fed dried food all the time, she has chew sticks, has Plaque Off on her food, and eats carrots every day.
Not wanting to put her through the trauma of a general anesthetic too soon after we got her, and there being no rush (no signs of discomfort what so ever) I have left this until now.
She went in yesterday. Well I phoned at 2pm as requested and they said she can be picked up after 3.30, they didn't say anything else. When I picked her up in transpires that she's had three of her front teeth out! Is it usual for the vets not to consult the owner before taking teeth out? As I said she wasn't in pain and regularly munches on a carrot every day.
I'm a bit cross to be honest, she's only 4 and now has a great big gap at the front of her mouth. I only saw the nurse when I collected her. We go back on Tuesday for a check up and to see the vet, I shall have a word with him then.
Lynz&Rox 06-03-2009, 10:26 Thats not very good for the vets to do it without asking you first. I wouldnt be very happy either. You could have a word and ask him why they had taken the teeth out if she was fine anyway.
My mums dog had to have some teeth out but the vet asked my mum first if they could be removed he didnt just take them out.
Hope Evies ok. :)
JarvisCocker 06-03-2009, 10:35 Thats what I'm cross about, because they didn't ask me first. She is absolutely fine today, back to normal, thank you for asking. She keeps sticking her tongue through the gap, so she must be wondering why she has a great gaping hole at the front of her mouth!
Lynz&Rox 06-03-2009, 10:41 Bless her! glad shes ok. :) She will be wondering why her tongue can go through her teeth! Its really bad they didnt ask you. I would be really angry especially if she was fine with her teeth. If they said they only needed cleaning originally i cant understand why they would just remove them.
As i said my mums had them removed but they asked first and they were cracked so did need removing.
I would ask the vet why when you go back and say you would have like to have been asked.
I think I'd be a bit miffed as well, if the possibility of removal hadn't even been mentioned.
But I'll bet they've covered by the consent form you signed - it probably gives them permission to carry out whatever procedures they think are necessary for the good of the pet.
I'd certainly want an explanation of why the possibility of extraction wasn't mentioned at the time of the consultation.
Hi Jarvis and little Evie. Albert had a dental last year as he had one big back one that had gone nasty. He also had all his little front teefs taken out as well and like Evie now has no bottom teeth like you i was rather upset.
When i asked about it she explained that although they looked fine they were all rather wobbly and she felt it would be better for him for them to come out now. I asked why she said that they would get loose could cause him pain and he may also catch them playing and yank them out. I was fine about it then as chances are we may have had to go back and have another GA for them to be whipped out so i was glad they did everything at the same time.
He also pokes his tongue out through the gap and when he is sleeping his tongue can often be seen. I have to say i think he looks rather handsome and quirky. He has not been bothered by it though apart from the water running out of his mouth but to be fair he has always done that.
sorry your not happy though xx
Rainrescue 06-03-2009, 12:40 Oh no - poor you and poor Evie
i too would be interested to know why - and yes - i think for that they could have phoned u or at least warned it was a possibility.
We had little jack the black jack russell last year, he had a bad eye. after numerous creams, one of them ended up making it worse, until in the end he was in pain and kept rubbing the eye on the floor. The vet advised removal of the eye to alleviate the pain. jack went blind that night with the other eye. we since learned that there was always that danger. I felt the same, it would have been nice to have been told there was possibilities of something bigger in the op.
Good luck little Evie
I would get her some arnica to ease the repairing and the bruising.
more cuddles and a hot water blanket for a few days then.
JarvisCocker 06-03-2009, 12:44 Hi Adz,
Yes my friend pointed out too that we've avoided her going 'under' again some time in the future by them doing the extractions now. I suppose I should take comfort in that as I really wouldn't want to put her through another GA soon. I'm hoping now that that will be it for a very long time and now that we can keep on top of her teeth we can hopefully make sure she doesn't have to have any more out.
I'm still cross they didn't consult me first though
Adz, or anyone else, do you clean your dogs teeth? It says on our notes that I was given that they should, ideally, be done every day?

Oh she's milking the sympathy Rain! She does what we call 'Princess Diana eyes'! She was laid in her spot on the sofa last night with a blanket over her, looking and feeling very sorry for herself. This morning she has bounced around the park like nothing had happened.
Whats arnica? Where do I get that from?
yes i do brush them and they also have carrots and chews. I am considering plaque off to as an extra measure. Albert was fine the day after and eating as normal with no signs of pain 3 days later it is amazing how quickly they heal in comparision to us.
Arnica is a herbal remedy used to relieve bruising and can help with aches and pains. I only thought of it as a gel but i imagine you can get it in tablet or powder form from health shops, have no idea how much you would use though.
Rainrescue 06-03-2009, 13:23 the homeopathy at wickersley will post it out to you
get a strong one -

just put a few drops in her water - or they also do the soft tabs, which u can put under her tongue - maybe some calendula to aid healing?
JarvisCocker 06-03-2009, 14:00 well she has Plaque Off, I've used that since we got her and she has carrots everyday, she loves them. And chews she has a couple of times a week, not every day due to her being prone to putting on weight. The only thing I don't do is brush them, so I guess we'll have to build that in too now! I'm going to do everything I can to ensure she doesn't loose any more.
Thanks for the advice Rain. X
i must admit i do forget some days and also jarvis the treatment she has just had could be from how here teeth were before you got her? Don't worry to much you can only so much. Most dogs have dentals at some point.
JarvisCocker 06-03-2009, 15:08 Yes the vet said they were quite bad last year when she had her check up, but she's had them scraped since then, plus all the stuff we've done for prevention since we got her. I guess it's cos she's only 4 that its worried me, seems awfully young to be having teeth removed.
