View Full Version : Red Riding-David Peace novels julesann 05-03-2009, 23:25 so just watched first instalment of the eagerly awaited "Red Riding" based on the 4 gritty novels by David peace, got to say i thought it was brilliant! did you think the same? roll on next week!!! Bloomdido 05-03-2009, 23:28 Missed it. How was our Sean? Jon 05-03-2009, 23:28 :suspect: before you get jumped on for posting this in the wrong section, i didn't think this was a patch on "our friends in the north" even though i thought it was the best thing channel 4 have done in years. I can't wait for next weeks :) surfinjim 05-03-2009, 23:41 Anyone know if its repeated? I missed it and apparently one of the neighbours kids makes an appearance in it? Cheers Jim:thumbsup: MR BENN 05-03-2009, 23:42 it was brilliant -really enjoyed it julesann 05-03-2009, 23:47 Anyone know if its repeated? I missed it and apparently one of the neighbours kids makes an appearance in it? Cheers Jim:thumbsup: not sure if going to be repeated but for sure it's going t be released on dvd, C4 are advertiseing that already but play.com may be cheaper!! was ruudy good and only to get better if the ripper saga is included (which we all know is!!) Jon 05-03-2009, 23:52 Try 4 on demand. AJ sheffield 05-03-2009, 23:53 Missed it. How was our Sean? He wont be winning any Oscars thats for sure. Jon 05-03-2009, 23:56 Blink and you missed him. Can you win an oscar for a tv show? Scozzie 05-03-2009, 23:56 could people actually make sense of it? that guys constant smoking really annoyed me. I got bored of it so flipped onto Grey's Anatomy. AJ sheffield 06-03-2009, 00:01 Blink and you missed him. Can you win an oscar for a tv show? If you could and he did then he would win one every year seeing as he appears to be playing the same character in everything he makes, he can weld though  AJ sheffield 06-03-2009, 00:03 Next weeks could be good though, Paddy Considine is in it  Strix 06-03-2009, 00:57 It was interesting If we'd not had life on mars first to get used to the idea that 1970's cops were thugs, this would have been somewhat unpalatable The editing tried to be to clever and just made it difficult to follow in places - chopping and changing from beat-up scenes to flash FORWARDS images :loopy: TylerXIII 06-03-2009, 06:54 it wasn't a touch on the books. It was very glossed over and the characters just didn't convince me =( Plain Talker 06-03-2009, 08:54 It didn't "grab" me like "Life On Mars" or "Our Friends In The North" did. (Even if the squad room looked as if it were lifted from the LOM set... ) sanman 06-03-2009, 09:19 I thought the editing was horrendous! Jumping backwards and forwards, dream sequences etc it just made is confusing and impossible to follow. With such a good topic why did it need all these surplus effects? Damon 06-03-2009, 10:17 With such a good topic why did it need all these surplus effects? Because that's how the books work - they are dense and tangled and intentionally confusing. They would have destroyed the spirit of the novels had they turned it into a purely linear story; I'm delighted they didn't do that. Having said that, the plot had been thinned out considerably and numerous characters dropped; I actually thought it was very easy to follow in a way that the books just aren't. I did miss that sense of complete disorientation, but thought they'd got as close as it was possible to get considering that they'd only got 2 hours to play with. Sean Bean was actually superb. The other thing to bear in mind is that each film is made by a different director, so the next two may treat the material differently. We shall see. foxforcefive 06-03-2009, 10:24 Well I switched on around 10 mins into it, he was shagging someone, after a few mins I went and made a cup of tea put some washing in etc, then I had a flick through the channels a bit, turned it back on about an hour later, he was shagging someone. Is this what he did for the whole 2 hours?? Maybe I missed the whole point in the first 10 minutes, it was something I was really looking forward to watching as well. Damon 06-03-2009, 10:27 Maybe I missed the whole point in the first 10 minutes, Sounds like it. jdgraham83 06-03-2009, 10:42 I really liked it although I did find it a bit predictable. Felt like id seen it all before somewhere. I thought the acting was spot on though, even Sean foxydebs 06-03-2009, 11:53 I thought the editing was horrendous! Jumping backwards and forwards, dream sequences etc it just made is confusing and impossible to follow. With such a good topic why did it need all these surplus effects? I found it hard to follow too. epiphany 06-03-2009, 11:58 Sean was in his element. Very naturalistic acting. I thought it portrayed the whole system of bribery and black market manipulation very well. Yes, it was a drama, but it also had a very important point to make - that this kind of thing inevitably does happen in a society obsessed with money and power. The bleakness of the entire thing was beautiful. Gunstar_Hero 06-03-2009, 12:28 Have to say i was disapointed by it. I thought the production values and acting were top notch, however i felt the story lacked something, it was all a bit too obvious. I've not read the books, maybe that explains more the relationships between the characters and why they are all scratching each others backs? In the end it just felt a bit like chirpy southerner returns to roots, gets too big for his boots, goes to one grim location, gets beaten up, moves to another grim location gets beaten up then finally flips, i dunno I just kept wanting more depth :( I'll be watching next weeks episode though, and a hope that as a story arc it becomes a good series, the potential is certainly there Bad_Hair_Day 06-03-2009, 14:39 it lost me completely - I thought the way it was filmed was too dark and fuzzy (ok I know nearly all of the scenes were in smoke filled rooms) but I just thought it made it hard to watch. Sean Bean was better than usual though - maybe because he could speak in his own accent, and didn't have to try pronouncing his t's like he has to in big movies! Funky_Gibbon 06-03-2009, 15:06 I thought the editing was horrendous! Jumping backwards and forwards, dream sequences etc it just made is confusing and impossible to follow. I found that too. I got quite bored with the whole thing until the last 20 or so minutes. goldenfleece 08-03-2009, 17:22 The fact that EVERYONE had a fag in their mouth all the time was rediculous beyond belief!!!! !! Why they chose to give free advertising for cigarettes for 120 minutes I do not know......I half expected even the kids to have fags in their mouth it was so OTT.....I was around in 1974 and pubs and clubs were not the fag filled gas chambers they were portrayed to be in this show....this show gives the impression that everyone smoked in the 70's, totally and completely wrong....even the Sweeney and other 70's shows, while true to say the lead characters enjoy the odd fag or 2, do not puff themselves to death throughout the entire duration of the show...... for that terrible and gross misrepresentation of the period in question, the production failed....COMPLETELY... they may as well have slipped in subliminal ads or background posters for Benson and hedges, marlboro, Players, ET AL.... the story was good until the final 10 minutes.....then it went to pot, and the ending was totally ludicrous......shame as the first 90% of the plot was sound...... Damon 09-03-2009, 09:55 Just to clarify, the plot is not over yet. goldenfleece 09-03-2009, 12:24 Just to clarify, the plot is not over yet. Is Sean Bean not dead then???? HarmOKnee 09-03-2009, 13:36 I thought the editing was horrendous! Jumping backwards and forwards, dream sequences etc it just made is confusing and impossible to follow. With such a good topic why did it need all these surplus effects? I found it hard to follow too. Same here, glad it wasn't just me. luybell 10-03-2009, 22:25 I thought this would be really good but I was very dissapointed. It was hard to follow & the constant smoking/ smoky rooms was annoying. I also found the violence a bit hard to stomach. I ended up turning over in the end. |
