View Full Version : Why do people walk behind reversing cars?
My next moan - and this is specifically in Chesterfield as opposed Sheffield where people have more sense - is stupid pedestrians.
Why is it, as soon as a driver starts reversing, for example, into a parking place, people walk in the road behind the reversing car?
Don't these people know that visibility is more difficult when you are trying to reverse annd it doesn't help with idiots walking behind you.
If you are one of these stupid people, I would certainly like to hear what you have to say!
Well said Joanna, the pedestrians in Chesterfield ought to have more sense than to walk around in car park. Blame the council for not having a car parknride.
Come on Joanna open up to us! what's really wrong with you this morning, wrong side of the bed maybe, wrong ..no better not, come on be honest are you usually like this first thing in the morning
They deserve to be knocked down!! I've watched people walk blatantly out behind a moving car. They should be knocked down! I for one have more sense - I look and if I see a moving car, I DON'T WALK BEHIND OR IN FRONT of it! (lol)
melthebell 26-06-2005, 09:01 or rather
why do cars reverse in front of us pedestrians?
:)
here, in this village, theres only 2 shops, right where we cross the road.........and no matter where you stand theres always a car pulling up right where you are stood, so you walk so youll walk across behind em and then they reverse to get parked right outside the shop door, as though a couple of feet makes much difference..........then theres the turning round in the junction between 2 roads at the bottom of our road .......quite a nightmare really :P
*moan mode off*
The law requires you to drive with due consideration and due attention to the safety of others.
You obviously just think about where YOU are going and think everyone else is basically just getting in YOUR way.
This thread and the other you started suggests you would be doing all us a favour by selling your car or learning to drive properly.
Maybe you should think about additional training, like the IAM driving test?

I have often wanted to walk over the car bonnet of any car which is on a pelican crossing and stationary.

It's proof of Darwin's theory of natural selection and survival of the fittest.
The problem with the world today is that the Health and Safety brigade have wrapped everyone in so much cotton wool that nobody can take responsibility for themselves any more. If it wasn't for the Health and Safety mafia, our trains would run on time, traffic on our roads would flow more freely, and there would be less idiots around getting themselves into a situation and then trying to blame everyone else but themselves.
Nothing like a good rant on a sunday afternoon

Passed first time so why should I? You're obviously one of these annoying people. Why should sensible people have to look out for silly idiots. I mean if a child runs in front of a car that's understandable, but drunk yobs - no comment!!!

no comment? what is the above then??
and you have to look out for people all the time when driving, so if you did not then you would not be "sensible"
Like I said I'm not perfect, but passing first time shows that the examiner thought I was good enough to be driving or is that wrong to? If you think I'm so bad. maybe I could witness your driving?!!!
Or shall we have it that pedestrians walk in the road and ban all cars, is that what you want? If it is, I hope you aren't driving anymore!

so people who pass on second atempt are equally competent yes?
Surely, if you pass first time, you are competent. If you fail first time, you are not yet competent. If you pass second time, then obviously you are - unless you've blackmailed the examiner. I hasten to add, I did not! I know I'm probably a little unfair as I know there's loads of people driving without ever passing their tests. You surely must agree that these people should not be on the road - and by that I don't mean really old people that didn't have to take a test in those days!

no if you pass first time it proves you are able to pass a driving test. some people get all nerves and cant do it which is understandable. like i have said in the other thread passing does not mean you know how to drive it means you passed you test and can them start learning. people tend to think they know everything about drving when they pass which is simply not true (not directed at you joanna just a generalisation)
UnkleBob 26-06-2005, 17:18 I'm with Joanna here. People, drivers or otherwise do not stroll in front of cars going forwards, it just doesn't/shouldn't happen. But they DO stroll on when you're reversing, i know as a driver i should give way,(and i do) but it's about time pedestrians took a bit more responsibility towards their own safety. Ananuvver thing...did you ever hear of a pedestrian being prosecuted for dashing out on a road without looking? If they get hit it's the driver's insurance that gets the bill and usually the driver gets the finger of suspicion. (sp) Is that fair?

actually they do stroll out when going forward too and i had this happen to me yesterday.
apparently (dont know if its true) in Los Angelas pedestrains have right of way so if they step out everyone must stop wether at crossing or not.

As far as I was aware, a pedestrian holds "right of way" on all our roads (with the exception of special circumstance roads - Motorways, designated no pedestrian roads ala Sheff Parkway etc.)!
UnkleBob 26-06-2005, 19:42 whether they hold right of way or not, it doesn't explain why some peds take it for granted. Pavements for people, roads for cars! apart from crossings that is, and also how many times do you see people crossing the road just a few metres from a zebra crossing? just a thought...

I passed first time too, so what? The DVLA test is easy. The IAM test is far better and a plonker with an attitude like yours wouldn't stand a chance of passing.
The law requires you to look out for pedestrians, cyclists, people more vulnerable than you in your tin box of death!
Or have you never made a mistake in your life?

It annoys me too. But, my opinions on this are irrelevent. It is up to you/me as a driver to take avoiding action (slow down, drive slowly past, then (if safe to do so;)) speed back up to an accaptible speed again).
I have not hit a pedestrian yet by following the above;), though some, admitedly, could do with the lesson in common sense being "driven" home to them;)!
*Twinkle* 26-06-2005, 21:25 What on eath does passing your driving test first/second/third/hundreth time have to do with pedestrians who walk behind your car?! I passed first time but I don't go round with a car sticker announcing it!
Pedestrians will walk behind you whether you're a learner, a new driver, or an elderly driver. They don't care! They just hope that you've seen them and toddle on by. They'd blame you for knocking them down if you did, yet no blame would lie with them for making the conscious decision to walk behind a vehicle going backwards, which common sense tells you is more difficult to observe than going straight ahead.
Next time someone does walk behind your car, just stop. Put the handbrake on and wait. Add a little tutting/finger wagging and headshaking if it makes you feel better, but don't for gods sake carry on reversing just because thats what you are there to do.
irenewilde 26-06-2005, 21:53 To get back to the topic! I know what you mean about people walking behind reversing cars and it's damn stupid. When you're reversing you're often looking in 2 different directions already watching for cars coming, you don't need some twerp wandering about at the back of your car as well. It's nothing to do with being a bad driver or being inconsiderate, it's just not being able to look in 3 directions at once and about pedestrians having a bit of sense too!
If someone has passed their driving test they have passed it - it really doesn't matter whether it's first, second or whatever - the only difference is - the longer it takes to pass your test the more likely it is that you have had many more lessons.
As for pedestrians walking behind reversing cars - that's life hun, and if you're going to get all stressed up about it you'd better learn to chill out before you end up having a stroke or something!
Remember all drivers are at some point also pedestrians - it's not a matter of 'them and us'. Some people do not notice a car is reversing (some vehicles do not have reversing lights that work for a start). Some people are in the process of walking in that particular direction before the car starts reversing - who is right?
Pedestrians always have the right of way, though that does not give anyone the right to act in a manner that puts others (drivers/pedestrians/themselves) at risk.
Part of the hazard perception test is for exactly the sorts of situations you are talking about - being aware at all times of what is going on around you and being able to identify potential hazards before you get to them.
WallBuilder 26-06-2005, 23:15 I walk around quite a bit and would never think of putting my well-being in danger by wandering into the path of a reversing vehicle. I would imagine that as I passed my test I might be more aware of what a driver can actually see. One of my pet hates are people who on a pelican crossing just run as soon as it's clear and then the cars are sat waiting when the lights go to red and no pedestrian in sight.
In fact as I'm getting a bit slower when it comes to crossing roads and the like I make darn sure the driver has seen me before my foot leaves the pavement.

Mr Strix has been known to introduce his CAT boot to somebody's rear wing for doing just that. The stupid git inside looked suitably petrified and hid under his flat cap.

Coz they want to cross the road ? :heyhey:
Isn't it up to the car driver to check that no one is behind his car whilst maneuvering ?

You'd be duck-taped and in the boot of my car, on a trip to the woods if you tried it on mine ;)
