Would someone please tell me when referees stopped giving out cards to players who foul in the penalty area and the foul results in a penalty being awarded.
I have seen players who have already received a yellow give away a penalty and they are not given a red card or sent off the field.
Latest instance, game we watched yesterday (Saturday) between Germany & Brazil.
During the football season we get 3 hours of football on Saturday morning, usually the one that kicks off at 3pm (it is then 10am here) we get live, plus any others that are televised 'over ome'.

why should a player be sent off or booked if it is a penalty?
if the foul is not dangerous, and not stopping a goal scoring opportunity then i dont believe any cards have ever been shown
If a player is in the penalty area controlling the ball and he is brought down by an opponent , tripping -pushing -pulling shirt etc etc I would think that the foul is definitely impeding a goal scoring opportunity !!!!!.

even if it is next to the very edge of the box next to a byline?
All to do with Law XII Cynthia - Fouls and Misconduct. There are certain offences that are mandatory cautions (eg slide tackle, tackle from behind) and others which are at the referees descretion as to whether they form "ungentlemanly conduct", usually based around how cynical the challenge is.
There are also certain offences that are a mandatory sending off for serious foul play, one of which is denying a goal scoring opportunity. This can be irrespective of how serious the foul is.
At the end of the day though, the combination of Laws V (the referee) and Law XII points out that it is in the referees opinion and thats what makes the game we love!
During Utd's match against Arsenal when Cullip clipped the ball back in the penalty area the Arsenal player had his hand raised resulting in the ball hitting his hand he did not get a red card, why I have seen defenders sent off for non deliberate hand ball but the offending player clearly had his hand raised .The player should have been sent off if the rules are correct.I think only when a player has a clear goal scoring chance & the offending player bring's him down should that result in a red card,a player who has overun the ball but still brought down, the offender should not be carded as a penalty is his punishment. But that's my opinion & FIFA & the FA will change the rules around again seeing as they know nothing about football.UP THE BLADES

Unless the tackle was Serious Foul Play, or the offender was denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity then it is not a red card. It may not even be a yellow card. Depends on the situation.
Thanks for all of the replies. I am not sure though that I trust
"The referees decision" as I am sure that a lot of the referees do not know the rules of the game and of course we all know that the majority of them should be compelled to go for an eye test. !!!!!!!
