No Davekowl,
it's now closed down, awaiting who knows what? Heeley Bank School (http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/SteveSheff/Heeley_Bank_School_edit_p.jpg)

I too was at Heeley Bank School from 1950 to 53 in the infants. We then moved further out to the then new estate at Base Green, Gleadless.
I can't remember any of the teachers but I do remember a friend called Paul Spencer and his sister who lived on Heeley Bank Road and attended the same school. Subsequently they moved to Cleethorpes.
I can also recall going to the outside toilets during lesson time and carrying on home ( we lived close by in Midhill Road ) only to be returned with short shrift by my Mum!
The building is still there , but currently boarded up - due for demolition?
I took a photo of it last Christmas just in case!

I was there till 1954. Stockley was a gentleman, Sowerby did his best to get some common sense into us. Goulding was a phsyco who terrorized two generations in our family - must have hated his job as much as he hated the kids.

Simpkins was all about football, and he joined in all the schoolyard games and used to kick a few ankles. Told me how to get my first job.

Goulding and Mr Humpage (in charge of the turnip garden) knew how to lay on the cane, and if we took advantage of the new breed of younger teachers, like miss Benn, Mr Harley and that violin playing other guy who was in love with miss Benn, you would get sent to them.

I was head boy in 1954 and I think Janet Warbuurton was head girl. This meant my schooling was ended at 14, because after that classess seemed to be optional, what with looking after the garden, football gear, milk delivery etc.

Happy days.

Forgotten her name now, shouldn't though she was the only one to ever give me an "A" in any subject..
Know what you mean about Bill Goulding though, he was my teacher for most of my time there and he just loved me..:shakes:

When I was there there were two prefabricated class rooms along side the dinning hall the Woodwork class was on the other side of it.
I don't know if she fancied Mr G or not, but she had the second class room we where in the first, and she started strolling through our class room to get to her own..
I think she got away with it twice, the third time Mr G shot out after her and we could hear her start crying outside the door, she didn't come through again after that..
You dint mess wi Bill...

Now up for sale by the City Council.

I feel it would be great if it could be saved along the lines of the Burton Street Centre in Hillsborough (this also a former School).
If enough interest amongst the community/local businesses/forum members a form of co op style company could purchase and operate the centre.
Several threads over the years have said that Sheffield could do with an independent hostel to cater for the budget travel market.
Part of this building could cater for this need.
So is the interest still there for Sheffield's own DIY SOS -the BIG BUILD project!!

I don't have all the expert knowledge myself by the way however from little acorns.....who knows what we could create.

What is the point of making a building grade 2 or any other grade for that matter, if there aren't any funds to keep it in reasonable repair..
Is it just an excuse for councils to allow a building to become a public liability so they can claim money from the goverment for demolition..?

He didn't half get about did Mr Goulding, as he was at Anns Road school I would guess in 1955,I'm sure he was the teacher that sat with us when we took our eleven plus exam, and I'm sure there was never another teacher that had such accuracy with a blackboard rubber, either before or after him !!
Also I can remember Miss Howard who taught us domestic science at Carfield School, she used to check out finger nails as we walked in and if the were long she would cut them straight across, plus if we did anything wrong, she would wrap out knuckels with a wooden spoon!!
The teachers were very strict back then, but because of that we remember what they taught us, I can still iron a perfect shirt, thanks to Miss Howard lol

I recall Miss Howard from Carfield, she had a little Riley car. She was a demon at perfection, everything had to be scrubbed at the end of her lessons, all the draining boards were scrubbed with huge hard scrubbing brushes, we used to go home with raw hands.
She even taught us how to wash combs, I ask you, as though we were some backward tribe from the darkest regions.

The irony of it is that I do wash combs the way she taught us and, yes, I can clean a house like a demented char lady and, although housekeeping is much simpler nowadays I am capable of doing it the "old way".
I never realised Miss.Howard taught at Heeley Bank, she taught my aunt at Carfield night school too.

I was a pupil at Heeley Bank until 1957, my last teacher was Mr. Elks. Sowerby scared me to death, especially when he threw the blackboard rubber at somebody! I think the teachers I liked (apart from Miss Benn, phwoar!) were Mr. Stevenson(?) and Mr.Elks. I remember us boys daring each other to run into the girls toilets, playing football in the yard with the entrance to the steps down to the prefabs being used as a goal. We had a rubbish football team and played against Carrfield and Lydgate Lane in some competition or other, don't think we won a game. Also remember going into the headmasters office and being tested on my reading and being allowed to draw the nativity scene on the wall blackboard in coloured chalks. Pupils I remember, though more could come to mind later, Janice Swan, Michael Milnes, John Harrahan(?) and Susan Fidler, who was sadly killed in Wednesday player David Ford's car crash.

Thanks for that bit of info on Goulding. Always wondered why his physically intimidating manner of teaching was tolerated by the school, heaven knows there were many complaints about him (in my family 2 uncles once went down to have a word with him). It would explain his stiff walk and permanent frown. I understand he mellowed a bit as he got older.

Looks like I was one year ahead of you, and I remember all those kids, but the wonders of the internet don't seem to have reached my leaving class of '53 - '54, (at least on this board) as I have never seen anyone of them post here. Maybe its just an age thing.

Yeah, I remember them well, but they were one or two years ahead of me.

I remember a school football game on the Ball Inn ground. Niven scored on a overhead kick form the penalty area, that even Rooney couldn't better. Talk about a local hero!

I used to give Ray Saxon a hard time at school (forget why - he was a great kid) but he grew into a giant, and later one night in the Nelson a yobbo spilled beer all over my girlfriend. Saxon (i hadn't seen him for years) came out of nowhere, grabbed him and literally threw him down the stairs, came back to the table and said, OK? I thought it was a bit of an overreaction and was worried about the poor guy, but my girlfriend was suitably impressed.

Ah memories!

Sorry CanPat, I can't remember Keith Ford or Barry Taylor. Mr Harley rings a bell but I can't put a face to him. Names that have come to me since my other post are Dave Beatson (and younger brother Paul) and Tony Pike. I lived in the prefabs on Erskine so didn't really spend much time with kids from around the Heeley/Myrtle Road area. The fact that I was a shy little wimp probably kept me fairly anonymous!

Thank you for the kind words, I'm Tony's brother. Yes we lived just above you on Hartopp Rd, and attended Heeley Bank upto S-2. We had a great school team then, and won the City Championship for 11yr olds, playing the Final at the Ball Inn ground of all places, in front of the entire school...what a thrill!! Mr.Simpkins was the coach

I ended up at Hurlfield when Heeley Bank moved all the boys over to Newfield, which I think was around 1957. because of where we lived - Hurlfield was so much closer. Had the last two years there and tried out for Sheffield Boys each year but didn't make the team. They had some good players at those tryouts who did turn pro for a short period, and then played on a couple of teams I had graduated to, mainly Retford Town.

Another boy from Heeley Bank who you would know, and myself, were invited as ground crew apprentices at Liverpool, (still have the leter someplace)!courtesy of Jack Simpkins scouting - or more "bird dogging" for them and also Aston Villa, along with an Irish guy called Jimmy Doran, who was also looking for talent for Liverpool, but in my case my mother who was a single parent wouldn't let me go, for various reasons.

Just to take it a little step further ...our family said he's "football mad" and I never missed a chance to play with anybody, anywhere, from the little level patch at the side of Midhill WMC, down to the little diamond at the bottom of East Bank road at the side of the prefabs behind the City Surveyors and also up on Black Banks where, if you shot too hard you'd be in for a five minute run down East Bank Rd, ending up almost at Farm Grounds lol. or if the kick went the other way, you'd have to take your chances treading through three foot high "gorze" bushes.... that hurt like hell.

One of my most treasured memories was meeting a bunch of classmates, kids all from around Thornboro', Walden and Myrtle Rds on Christmas Day when were about 7 yrs old, who like me had all gotten new football boots for Christmas, and there we were behind the City Surveyors ground, from about 11 till 4 on Christmas Day having a kick around, pretending "who" we were!!.

All this time I never realised their were secret admirers and fans out there, lol, and it's nice to think you would still remember me after what is more than 50 years (I'm being kind!!) Thank You!! I hope life has treated you well, and wish you all the very best. If you would like to p.m. me letting me know who you are, that would be really great!! Thanks again Roy

Well, I'm really sad that it's only now that I've found out that Ken went to the same school as me, I chatted to Ken a good few times at work but never about our school days. Really likeable bloke was Kenny and he couldn't half sup ale! He spent years cleaning out sooty gas boilers with a special vacuum cleaner, I can still see him now in his boiler suit permanently covered in soot, wooly beret on his head with his biro stuck through the front of it like an arrow. I think his dream was to retire to his Spanish hide away, shame he never made it. R.I.P Kenny.

Just a thought. At the bottom of Erskine Cres, a couple of houses along from the corner, bottom side, there was a beautiful little girl that used to wait at the top of the steps for the paper. She was about nine (maybe your age then) and had dark hair and big brown eyes. I used to mentally calculate how old I would be when she was eighteen. Don't worry, it was all innocent, but seeing her made my day.

Sort of trastrick, now you've mentioned her I think I know who you mean, I can't rember her name but I think she was a local beauty queen in her teens. I believe the older brother of a youth I knew was her boyfriend, something else comes to mind but you never know who's reading this! I can't remember any of the names but images of all of them are frozen in my memory. I seem to remember that occasionally we would go round the back of the Myrtle Road co-op to try and spy her in her bedroom!

Thanks, I'll always remember that pretty smile when I gave her the paper.

I remember the stupid road layout too. To get from Erskine Crescent to Heeley Bank school, you had to cut through the corner prefab, down their front path, around the house, and down their back path to Lawson's lane.

Otherwise it was a very long way around, 'specially if you were late for school! They tried everything, lots of wire, gates, fences, but we all still managed to sneak through.
