View Full Version : Have you ever had your dog "petnapped"?
I watched a programme on Sky Real Lives yesterday about all these people who have had their dogs "petnapped" - some of them got them back but had to pay a ransome!!! Some areas it seemed to happen a lot.
Wondered if this had ever happened in Sheffield?

twibstix 05-03-2009, 21:34 I am in Rotherham and had one of my dogs stolen a few years ago, the police were bleeping useless, did not even want to put it on their computer that he had been stolen as it was likely in their opinion, that he had wandered off. No it wasn't Wilbur was and is my shadow, he's my little love bug with an amazing character. I eventually was put through to an "understanding" copper who put all the details on their system and gave me the number for Jayne at Dogs Lost (or Lost Dogs, would hate to be pulled up for not knowing what I was on about here). She was fantastic and I eventually got him back - a friend then even followed the creeps home (2 drunk druggies) and got their address. Coppers never even went round - and I never got his collar and lead or his sisters coat (could not find his that morning) back either - and my friend saw them all in the creeps house.
I also know of an instance a few years ago at an agility show where 2 men were seen to go into a person's van and steal their collies in broad daylight (no one questioned it at the time as agility is a friendly game and it was assumed that these people were doing the owner (who was judging at the time) a favour by taking their dogs for a walk. They only ever got one dog back.

Glad you got your dog back - yes, Jayne at Dogs Lost was the one the programme was all about. Where did it get stolen from?
PrincessKate 06-03-2009, 10:01 We had ours stolen and i know exactly who it was and he refused to give him back saying he didnt have him yet i could clearly hear him barking trying to get out! rang the police they REFUSED to do anything!!!!! so i took matters in to my own hands and stood shouting him for hours outside of the cabin he was locked in, by now i was busting for a wee and it was very late i went to my house and when i came out 2 mins later low and behold he was there! sat waiting to come in. The person who took him was working on a site near me, well i phoned his boss and he never did come back!

Good one you!! On the programme I watched one guy saw a supermarket assistant with his dog that had been stolen and instead of trying to argue and persuade her it was his dog, he just ran up to her, snatched the dog and ran away with him!!

The problem that was shown on the tv programme is that your dog is taken then they call you and say "do you love your dog" "I know where you're dog is, it is with a new family, they have become very attached to it but maybe if you paid £xxxx they would think about giving it up"
The police won't do anything about it, you don't know where the dog is, so you have no choice but to pay the money IF you want to see your dog again!

As someone currently looking for one of their dogs, and who has all of them microchipped I was very shocked to find out the following today.
If your dog goes missing and you fail to report it to the local council/dog warden and then find out someone else has your pooch then there is nothing legally you can do to prove the dog is yours (from Dogs Lost website).
Also, the microchip too is in effect almost useless - all it proves you own is the microchip, not the dog whose skin its under - I have signed a petition on this in the past because it also means that when your dog (for whatever reason) is taken to a vet and the "owner" mentions that they have "only recently" got the dog then the vet must scan for an existing chip. When they find that the dog is chipped their Duty of Care is then to the person who brought the dog in - not to you. They have to inform the "new owners" that the dog has a chip and, I believe can provide certain information. They are under no obligation whatsoever to ring you, the person whose details are on the chip.
Found out the information about the microchip when Wilbur was stolen.
mummysaz21 06-03-2009, 20:06 whats point in a chip then?my cat went missing 8 months ago, will this be same for her if somebody finds her?they wont ring me?

Hopefully a responsible person would but we know there are plenty of people out there that are not so responsible :(
mummysaz21 06-03-2009, 20:59 no i mean if somebody has took her in right, and they decide to get her chipped and the vets find her chip, then would the vets ring me or not bother?

They might tell you but their duty of care (which was set by veterinary governing body) is to the people currently "owning" the animal.

Reading that has just made me go cold. Imagine getting a phone call like that. What is this world coming too.
