View Full Version : Bronson - The Movie
I'm not a big fan of real life crime dramas or gangster biopics but I can't help being a little intrigued by the new Bronson release, which has already upset the Prison Service. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7925212.stm)
I saw a clip of it a while ago and thought it looked incredibly well acted, but I'm a bit put off by the prospect of arbitrary violence.
Is anyone else thinking of going to see it?
NEKRO138 05-03-2009, 09:38 I am going to see it! Can't wait.
Agent Gypo 05-03-2009, 09:45 I read his book a few years ago, I'll be going to see the film. Bronson isn't quite the unflinching monster he's made out to be.
GrooveArmada 06-03-2009, 02:22 Hope his parole hearing on 11/03/09 is not tainted by the release of the movie 2 days later.
0742Sheff 06-03-2009, 03:47 If it's anything like watching 'Chopper' he will not get parole.
melthebell 06-03-2009, 19:11 bronson is one of those "bogeymen" apart from his crime...obviously, the only thing hes guilty of inside is NOT playing the game, thats why hes spent so much time inside and in solitary, and thats the reason why people want to see films like this.
ill see it
Alastair 06-03-2009, 19:14 I want to see that movie, the trailer looks great

The film will probably feed some insatiable need. What it wont show is...he's as thick as the walls that incarcerate him...if not thicker.
Alastair 07-03-2009, 01:45 His art says there's more to him than you think.
i cant wait to go and see it
His art says there's more to him than you think.
I'm sure that's why it'll be a box office smash...his art!
There's plenty of talent within prison walls...the only thing that defines this one is...he's thicker!:D
melthebell 07-03-2009, 09:38 he aint thick, far from it
I can`t wait to see it, I have his book and its a very interesting read!
melthebell 07-03-2009, 10:35 I can`t wait to see it, I have his book and its a very interesting read!
indeed, people are slagging it off for glorifying him and his crimes etc
BUT
it does make for an interesting, rollercoaster of a ride etc
would a story of one of his hostages make as interesting and violent film? i doubt it, but then if they wanted to, somebody could do one, and prove me wrong.
I hope it turns out as good has it should be.
I think Ill be seeing this.

You are thick for even posting that. You obviously know nothing about him

So he isn't also guilty of physically assaulting prison staff and inmates on numerous occasions then?
The Prison Service is further upset that a recording of him was played at last night's premiere (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7936133.stm).
It seems to be getting a lot of publicity but I can't see that going down well with the parole board
Thebanginman 11-03-2009, 10:11 So he isn't also guilty of physically assaulting prison staff and inmates on numerous occasions then?
Its a good job they dont arrest every P.O that is handy with a baton the prisons would be devoid of workers.
BasilRathbon 11-03-2009, 10:12 I'm quite intrigued by the fact that a famous Hollywood actor was so impressed by the life of this prisoner that he adopted the same guy's name and went on to star in the "Death Wish" series of films.
alchresearch 11-03-2009, 10:12 So he got 7 years for armed robbery in 1974 and has spent almost 35 years inside for his behaviour in prison?
Doesn't seem that smart to me!
Thebanginman 11-03-2009, 10:26 Bronson has served 34 yrs for a 7 yr original sentence and like Ronnie Biggs he is being kept locked up simply because he has made the authoririties look the fools that they are.The object of the Prison hierachy ,when an individual like Bronson is brought in is to break him in mind and spirit by any means, they couldnt do it so ergo Bronson is going nowhere,Jimmy Boyle went through the same procedure up in Scotland, like Bronson he is a very intelligent individual as well, also like Bronson very proud and refused to be broken by the system.
A lot has been made of the hostage situation in which Bronson didnt hurt anybody but because it was the prison governor being involved the authorities are making a point,if it hsd been anyone else they would have walked years ago.
Theres a large round area in wormwoob scrubs where the center is strictly verboten for the inmates, for no other reason than to belittle the inmates, nothing to do with security or anything.Bronson was having none of that and walked straight across it,didnt hurt anybody or make a fuss, its things like this that the authorities have taken umbrage to and extended his sentence..Trite..not arf
P.S Try reading Jimmy Boyles autobiography..A sense of freedom...its an eye opener to the workings of the prison system when confronted by the real hard cases

Thats the difference to Bronson and the majority of people in this country he refuses to adopt the sheep mentality that infects todays society
slimsid2000 11-03-2009, 14:46 I initailly misread this and thought it said Branson.
melthebell 11-03-2009, 21:53 So he isn't also guilty of physically assaulting prison staff and inmates on numerous occasions then?
thats not playing the game innit??

damn, i agree with banginman on something :(

Again you talk from the rear end....could this be from personnel experience? How many years have you spent behind bars? or within the prison system?
He's doing very hard time because he's very thick.
On your reckoning we should be waving the banners for our children that buck the system. The difference between our kids and this nutjob is he's an adult.
He didn't rebel for anything as noble as "fighting the system" unless it was for himself...you talk as if this man has fought a crusade for his fellow inmates. I'm sure his fellow inmates are allowing him to continue the cause in their name though....:D
Bth.....the system doesn't have to break him...it just has to confine him. Which it's doing.
JohnnyMathis 13-03-2009, 15:18 I'm quite intrigued by the fact that a famous Hollywood actor was so impressed by the life of this prisoner that he adopted the same guy's name and went on to star in the "Death Wish" series of films.
You've always got to take a joke too far haven't you, how ridiculous.
Everyone knows the name came because he was a big fan of Grange Hill.
That was Maurice Bronson! Classic wig, though :)
melthebell 14-03-2009, 18:39 by the way banginman i just watched a sense of freedom (film) never knew there was one tbh (1979 handmade films)
its quite scum ish...ie:- violent and gritty, was good, just ordered the dvd off play.com
£2.99 :P
Alastair 15-03-2009, 19:15 Oooh, I read a review of this. It's directed by the Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn. So I have high hopes for the movie Bronson.
Who?
Well he directed the superb Pusher trilogy of films, following a group of small time crooks and gangsters and drug dealers on the streets of Copenhagen. It's a brilliant series of movies which deserve to be much better known.
Here they are - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pusher-Trilo.../dp/B000FH8TZ6
Alastair 26-03-2009, 00:43 Went to see this today, it was good. Some quite surreal moments a la David Lynch, choreographed violence to classical music a la Clockwork Orange and a surprising amount of campness. 8/10
Frank Sidney 28-03-2009, 13:36 If anyone has been to see this film yet, I'd be grateful for your views on it, was it good? I'm thinking of going to see it but not sure as I've heard such mixed reviews about it. Generally, if you've seen it what did you think?
Alastair 28-03-2009, 19:49 I liked the soundtrack too and had to track this tune down afterwards -

I suppose you can never forgive him for taking those two Iraqi hijackers hostage
Alastair 29-03-2009, 00:28 Alien... There's huge numbers of very thick people in prison, so your analysis that Charles Bronson is "doing very hard time because he's very thick" can't be right.

I wont even bother to pull this crap to bits1) you wouldnt even understand how a mans mind works and 2)You have no idea at all about the workings of the prison system
I bet your one of the..lock em up and throw away the key brigade.
The glorification of a psycho.
I agree with the prison service myself.

I'm guessing you do?
Agent Gypo 13-04-2009, 16:06 Well, I went to see the film last night.
Tom Hardy is excellent, and the cinematography is good, but the film overall is a little disappointing.
The visceral nature of some of Bronson's attacks fall short of how he describes them in his book, and the film failed to mention anything of his second marriage, escapes, the many books he has released and fitness records set in prison. The director seemed unsure whether to portray Bronson as violent nihilistic thug or misunderstood eccentric rogue, and I left wondering what the film was actually trying to say.
Worth seeing, but really should have been better.
6.5/10
I watched this last night. I think I am probably the only person who felt sorry for him .. he is one ****** up man and I personally think he would be better off dead - what a tormented soul. :(
