We have just taken in a young mastiff bitch x from the pound. She is suspect to being pregnant. Was taken in being in season - but as she was found straying she could have been 'found' by another male of suspect parentage - prior to being picked up.

Whilst she has been spayed - she is very bellied - and seems just sort of 'off' and subdued - I don't know - I am just cautious that she may be pregnant.

I phoned our vets today to get her scanned and then spayed if pregnant - but its £66 - does anyone have a scanner that would be easy for us to get to?
Based at rotherham?

This poor little girl - abused and in such a state - so young - I'm so glad we have her now - in the kennels she was stressed - going at some other dogs, but basically - she was scared to death - possible suffering from her previous ordeals. We took her home and she almost fell asleep on the way, put her a warm coat on, a thick blanket, a drink of water and some tea - she smiled and licked our hands and wagged her tail - it was pityful to see. No doubt now as I am typing she is fast asleep in a nice quiet kennel - halfway home to being in a lovely new home - thats what makes rescue so worth while to be involved in. I am so pleased we got her - but just want her right. If only the vets would help us help them too.

I know it is a lot to pay. A friend of mine charges £25 to use her machine - its just the time it all takes to get it sorted.

There aren't any obv. signs she is displaying - a slight hardening in her tum - low belly - and boobs a little larger than they should be for a 10mnth old. Thanks for your offer - much appreciated.

She won't be whelping though - no doubt daddy could be anyone's wandering stafford heritaged guy - and this lady is only 10 months' oldish herself - caught on her first season - the poor lady.

I will prob. just get her in and spayed asap - then will be looking for a foster home so she doesn't have to recover in kennels which is horrible in itself. Hopefully she wont be unwanted for long.

ha
no worries - never noticed
yes - she is lovely
in the pound, she was stressed, and not showing herself off.
when we got her out and in the car - she curled up on the back sleep and prety muhch fell asleep - she was a babe - abused by people.
her back bone is sticking out like mad and she is probably a third underweight - which could indicate the pups are taking the food she has on board.

Yes - she will be spayed asap - but that in itself is a worry as she was only in season 5 weeks ago - we usually wait until 10wks after - but in iinstances like this - she needs to be done before

Sorry for me being thick here but if she was spayed and she was pregnant, would that mean the little mite will loose the pups?

EDIT: sorry i have googled it, and figured out the answer, good luck! and i can see ur doing the very best for her.

I'm not too sure that I entirely agree with your decision on this one Rain.

Assuming a scan shows the puppies as little more than advanced sperm donations, then I would agree that a termination might be the best route. However, if the puppies are very advanced, which it sounds to be the case here, I'm worried that abortion could cause more problems for a young dog than it solves. I have no scientific experience, as you know, but it doesn't sit well with me.

I would normally consider a small pregnant dog to possibly be facing a life threatening birthing, if the mating partner is unknown ie the puppies could be just too big for the mother to cope with, but this doesn't sound to be the case here.

It's a tough call in my opinion and not one I'd judge you for, but I had to share my thoughts.

No problem re difference of opinion fishpole - thats why i want her scanned asap to see if she is, and if she is - how old / before we know what we have to do about anything.

But this girl should be much bigger than she is - her spine is showing, and her ribs are like skeleton ribs - whatever is in will not not have had the best of nourishment at the start of its life - and its in the early growing stages that they need good decent food and certainly not be under such severe stress and fear as she has undergone in her short life. tbh i don't think she will be pregnant - i just want to make sure.

I trust our vet for advise and we will take his opinion on which way we should go if there is any decisions to make. I hope its just a bad case of wind or worms (yuk) and then we can just get her on the road to good health - and the right home that she should have gone into in the first place.

Only a baby herself and already abandoned - how sad.

I know what you're saying and it is a moral dilemma in my opinion.

Has there been any progress on the scan since yesterday? If not, give me a call tomorrow OK?
