I,ve just read on the Internet where two men have been sentenced to 10 years and 7 years for Kidnapping and Blackmail. One of them , it was reported , had been sentenced in 2001 for using a a firearm whilst resisting arrest.
I would have thought the 2001 offence would mean that he was still in the nick . It seems a bit soon to be back on the streets , kidnapping and blackmailing ?
Some time ago , on a different topic , I mentioned the case of two men , in Sheffield , in the early '60's , one from Sheffield , one from London , who were , "weighed off" for a number of offences , including at least one firearm offence ------but no-one was killed or even wounded. One was sentenced to 21 years and one to 19 years. There was no parole system , then .If you behaved you got one third remission .
Does anyone think there may be a connection between the light senteces given to today's gun-wielders and the increasing use of guns in all kinds of crime ?

People who choose to carry a gun don't give getting caught a second thought. If the sentence was a mandatory 20yrs with no time off for good behaviour It wouldn't stop them.
They carry guns because they are bad people, they are not scared about getting caught.

Then surely the sentencing should be designed to protect the public from these people ? - a mandatory 40yrs with no time off for good behaviour. I think that might stop them :P

Nah... they're bad people.. if they have a gun, they are willing to use it. They have no respect for the law or other people. Prison is an occupational hazard.
well it'll obviously stop them because they're in prison!!!
just forget prison as a method of deterence to reduce this crime, just keep them off the streets for as long as they can - by imprisonment!!! as you say, they are bad people and don't care about others so the more time they're kept off ths streets, the less people suffer!!!

Why don't they just glue their fingers together and then they couldn't get their trigger finger in the loop bit where the trigger is.
Sorted.
I'm voting for axing thumbs off.
It's surprising how difficult any crime is without thumbs

I think it gets blown a bit out of proportion. Theres all these little bad boys shouting about guns and things getting hyped up in the press but theres not really that many cases involving shootings to be fair.

there's more gun crime than you think....lucky13 - you need to go out on the streets - its less than 1% of cases where it ends up in a shooting but its still there....
