View Full Version : Kitten having accidents!
YourHandyMan 02-03-2009, 21:24 As most of you know, I have an amazing 5month old Tabby called Max.
He's been good as gold up to now, but today and last night, he's started pooing in the lounge, but not in the same spot.
His litter tray is clean and he is using this also.
He IS on anitbiotics, would that cause him to act different n poo randomly?
Please help guys, as getting the poo up off teh carpet is making me ill! :gag:
Moonbird 02-03-2009, 22:54 Oh dear, poor you I am having some problems with that with my kitten too at the moment:suspect:
Perhaps you could try putting the cat in the same room as the litter tray at night for a while so that he remembers where to go, the antibiotics might be making him feel a bit off, sorry I don't have anything more constructive to say but I am sure that someone will soon be along with better advice.
Nothing as nasty as cat poo :gag:
Antibiotics tend to kill off the natural bacteria present in the digestive system so I'm guessing that he may just be getting "Caught short".
Moonbirds suggestion may help though.
Good Luck
YourHandyMan 03-03-2009, 08:56 Just thought Id show some pictures of the main room he is kept in, when not supervised.

Snagglepuss 03-03-2009, 09:11 I once heard that if you put their food bowls where they are pooing (where these mishaps are occurring), this stops them from doing it as they don't like to toilet where their food area is. Have not tried this myself so don't know if it works, but I suppose it is worth a try maybe? :)
JarvisCocker 03-03-2009, 09:18 You need Medusa - PM her if she doesn't come on, she'll sort you out I'm sure.
And here I am! Isn't it nice for your opinion to be respected? :)
The first thing you need to learn is the 3 steps of clearing up pet messes properly:
1) Pick up the solids then shampoo the area and rinse with plenty of water, using a dilute biological clothes washing liquid solution with a spot of pet safe disinfectant added, then blot dry or run over with a Vax or similar to dry. Do not use bleach, even on areas it could be used safely on.
2) Soak the area with a solution containing a pet spill odour killer, such as Safe4's Odour Killer or a specialist one from a pet store, leave to soak in for half an hour or so, then blot or dry as before.
3) Use a steam cleaner to penetrate the area fully to the best of your ability, then dry and air properly.
These 3 steps should make sure that if he goes back to the same spot then this is for a behavioural reason rather than because he can smell it.
OK, so you've cleaned the areas, on to why he's doing it.
Have you changed anything recently? People in your home, position of litter tray, sort of litter tray or litter? Is his litter tray clean and pleasant for him? Has his space been invaded by an older tom or a more dominant cat recently?
My first thought from looking at your room (very informative photos- thank you) was that the spaces he has found to poo in are much more quiet and away from people's legs and table legs than his litter tray. Is there any possibility that the dining table area is a bit busy or noisy at certain times of the day or that he's been hit by something falling from the table? Could he associate being near the table with feeling that he's not able to concentrate on getting that faraway look in his eyes that he needs to have a poo in peace?
If that's an issue then simply having the litter tray in a more peaceful spot may do the job, or possibly a combination of moving it to somewhere quieter with having a covered litter tray so that he doesn't feel that he's being pushed too close with other people.
At 5 months he's just starting to have his own opinions about his environment, so he may simply be trying to show you where he wants his litter tray.
So if you have changed anything about his litter tray, position or litter please change it back to see if that works.
I'd also get hold of another couple of cheap litter trays and put them where he was choosing to go to the loo. I know that it's not very convenient having a litter tray behind the TV or wherever, but if it sorts out the pooing in the short term it's worth it and you can persuade him to go elsewhere in time.
If there is anywhere that you really can't put a litter tray that he's going then you can stop him from going there just by making it an unpleasant place to be for kitties. Two harmless ways of doing this are to cover the area with sheets of silver foil which are taped down (they don't like walking on it) or by covering the area with double sided sticky tape with the sticky exposed. They hate it and will avoid stepping on it at all costs, but of course that doesn't change why he's pooing in the first place.
He could have a problem with urgency caused by a change of food, the antibiotics or worms, so please check that he's up to date on his worming and put down extra trays where he's choosing to go. If the antibiotics are giving him the squits then a treat of a teaspoon of live yoghurt twice a day for a week when he's come off the pills should help that out gently.
So, in the first instance, if you've changed anything please change it back to see if that stops the problem.
If not, please add extra litter trays where he's choosing to go. I agree that limiting him to a quiet space with plenty of clean litter trays when you aren't there is the place to start.
Crossed fingers- hope it all works soon.
YourHandyMan 03-03-2009, 19:40 That was brilliant information thanks medusa.
My brother has moved in, on the same day he started his anti biotics. My brothers fiance has a male cat at her house, is it possible that my brothers presence has spooked him?
We'll keep him contained, in the same room as his litter, when un supervised, until he's off the antibiotics.
I've just built him a little wooden house and put the litter tray in it, in the same place, we'll see how that goes!
Ah- it could be as simple as he doesn't trust your brother yet (especially as he smells of a different cat) so please ask your brother to be especially calm and quiet around him for the time being, and particularly careful about how he is around the litter tray and the dining table.
Hopefully it will all subside as he gets to know and trust your brother more and as he's no longer on the pills, although I think that this is a statement about him being upset by something physical rather than the antibiotics. Of course, the 'something physical' could be the trip in a basket to the vets and the pills going down his neck too ;)
YourHandyMan 05-03-2009, 12:44 Nooooo! he did it again in the lounge! He was doing so well!
He did it right nest to the plate which had food on this morn?!
I#ll let the missus clean him up this time though!
sheff290 05-03-2009, 12:49 what are you feeding him handy man what brand and wet or dry
foxyflugel 06-03-2009, 11:08 There is a product by Sherleys called 'swiftie' - it is a little bottle and you just sprinkle some of it on their litter and it gives off some kind of scent that encourages them to go where you put it - it does work very well - I used it when training my 6 kits to their litter kwitters. It only costs a few pounds and could help if he is pooing because he is upset as opposed to because of the anitbiotics he is on. Good Luck
