I prefer classic oldies such as 60s/70s and 80s music to be honest..

Back in the day kids had more sense to buy overhyped tosh like Crazy feckin' Frog!

Varies from day-to-day, minute-to-minute. I'm a big fan of thrash-jazz, although that's a pretty broad genre in itself and the difference between something like John Zorn's tight three-second splatter pieces and Last Exit's sprawling industrial improvisations is far bigger than the difference between, erm, "Dance" and "Speed Garage".

That said, I also like a lot of "Ambient" music. And "Classical". And "Jazz". And "Rock". And "Pop". And "Folk". And "World". And... no, sorry, I can't be bothered typing any more labels. Though a lot of the stuff I listen to has, I believe, been labelled "Pronk".

The thing is, labels are for wusses and unadventurous record shops. The best music is usually found in the cracks between the labels.

Actually, my ideal music would probably be some kind of prog-psychobilly, but I haven't yet discovered any band that plays anything which could be described as that. Perhaps one day I'll start my own (any fellow musicians care to join me?)

I voted rock, but I'm inclined to agree with DanSumption...

although I mostly listen to alternative music like rock, metal, thrash, prog rock etc etc... I listen and love a whole variety of music...

and your poll really doesnt cover a whole lot of genres and its not even being broad...

IMO i'd put speed garage in the dance section if your using rock to basically cover, brit rock, metal, thrash metal, goth rock, black metal, indie, punk, hardcore, noisecore, progressive rock... etc etc etc...

I agree totally with Xafier.

Your poll doesn't include enough options, and what options you've given are very similar. Dance, r'n'b (whatever that means nowadays) and speed garage are pretty much the same to me.... runs away quickly :D

I've always listened to mostly 'alternative' music - esp punk and indie - and I don't think a 'rock' category is enough to cater for these, plus stuff like, say, U2 or Queen or Coldplay, etc. Too much diversity in the 'rock' category to be meaningful.

Yup, having said that I don't think I've seen a single poll yet on Sheffield Forum where I've been happy with the entire range of options offered, so rjo2 is certainly not alone.

I forgot to mention, I do like quite a bit of dance music too (although mainly to dance to rather than to listen to), especially "intelligent dance music" like Squarepusher, Photek and Aphex Twin. Also quite a bit of Hip Hop and Urban music. As ever though, the particular examples within each genre which really turn me on are usually the ones which experiment, push the boundaries, and come close to being another type of music altogether.

i like alternative music, mostly indie stuff but ill listen to most genres except dance! there is some dance that i like but most of it i hate! its not music at all!

i also like some 60's music as well such as Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and kinks. all talented groups and not one had a thud thud thud sound banging in the background either. ah those were the days.........hehehe

MOD: Since aNTAcid has chosen "Going out in Sheffield" to discuss this I'd assume s/he meant the discussion to be about the music forumers choose to go out to listen to in Sheffield. If that's not the case then aNTAcid is free to report the thread & ask for it to be moved :)

IMO: Good poll, Good location!

I chose Dance. The choices are a wee bit limited but it has to be dance! simply because I like to boogie, Yes Sir! Boogie Woogie...

Please don't talk about love tonight.
Please don't talk about sweet love.
Please don't talk about being true and
all the trouble we've been through.
Ah, please don't talk about
all of the plans we had
for fixin' this broken romance.
I want to go where the people dance.
I want some action ...
I want to live!
Action ...
I got so much to give.
I want to give it.
I want to get some too.
Oh, I ...
Ohhh I ...
I love the nightlife,
I got to boogie on the disco 'round,
oh yea.

Voted other because I am quite into Ska at the moment. I am sure there are also plenty of lovers of reggae, blues, soul, northern soul etc. out there.

Out of the given choices, I voted for *rock*, but really i'm an 80s girl, synthpop/new romantic/pop - most 80s stuff really !

i voted dance as that covers most of the main sub genres i listen to - mainly techno and trance but they have enough sub genres in themselves ! also partial to a bit of breakbeat , deep house , speed garage , funk , disco , heavy metal , indie , 80s pop , electro , grunge , classical etc. i like things from just about every genre , even the mainstream c**p i love to hate has the odd thing that makes me smile. IMO all music is fantastic . Even if not to my personal taste it appeals to somebody . Music is a way of communicating with even the most far out communities of people all over the world . Fine , tribes deep in the jungle would probably prefer some nice tribal drumming rather than some stomping acid techno but music is like a universal language that everyone can understand .
As for peoples comments on certain genres 'not being music at all' , thats a very narrow minded opinion. Not meaning to offend anyone but all noise can be music and its just up to personal opinion whether you like it or not. Whether we are using our voices , a guitar , a drum , a computer or even something as simple as an old bin and some pots and pans , it is all still music when it is put together to form a beat/song and if people out there are making it then it must appeal to someones taste.

CD's sat at the side of my PC (artists only);

White Stripes
Gorillaz
Beatles
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Joni Mitchell
Smiths
Roisin Murphy
De La Soul
Grateful Dead
Futureheads
Cream
Miles Davis
Janes Addiction
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Pink Floyd
Portishead
Darkness
Kevin Ayers
Fairport Convention

Suppose that makes me "old hippy hip hop rock" or something similar.
