View Full Version : Martial Arts: Tricks and Flips
battouchan 19-11-2003, 16:12 I am currently training in budo taijutsu and have been for a few years now, but i have recently become interested in Tricks and Flips.
I have found a few classes that incoperate these into their styles like capeoria and taekwondo, but i am really after a place that just focuses purely on acrobatic tricks like somersualts, misty flips, butterfly twists etc.
If no such class exists and if i can get enough people interested, i am prepared to book out the gymnastics room at hallam uni on a regular basis.
Anyone in sheffield interested?
Ste
Tombo Dojo
I'm very interested ... let me know if you set something up ... count me in !!
Jack Yerbody 25-11-2003, 08:50 Wouldn't a gymnastics class be what you're looking for?
battouchan 25-11-2003, 15:09 Yeah, if you know of one running then that would be great. I did go to the one at hallam uni last year, but they stopped for some reason.
I have managed to book a room for this saturday (sorry about short notice) at the Hallam Uni Gym 4:30-6:30. The facility is really good for gymnastics as it has loads of crash mats and baby trampolines.
If i can get the people interested i will book it out on a regular basis next year.
frankieboy 10-12-2003, 22:00 hi,
might be up for it (but pretty busy)
promised myself i'd get to do a somersault or back flip
before my time is up - so i'd best hurry!!!
let me know if anything gets sorted out.
good luck
Check this site if you're wondering what all this is about:

battouchan 11-12-2003, 12:32 Cheers mike.
The OX Pasture is one of the most useful sites. But yeah, basically that is the stuff I want to do. Look at the Flash kick, I sooooo want to do that move.
I had a good turn out a few weeks back and that was just through the people i train with. I will definitely be booking the room regularly next year.
Still can’t bring myself to do a back somersault yet!
Jack Yerbody 12-12-2003, 08:18 I'm a martial artist of some years experience, and I really don't understand the thinking behind "tricks 'n flips". Are they solely for show?
Sorry, guess I'm a bit of a purist.
battouchan 12-12-2003, 08:27 I think for some people they are for show. I am sucker for shiny things really, i think they look very cool but I’m not doing them to show off.
I have always had this thing, that by the time i get black belt i want to be able to do forwards and backwards somersaults, otherwise i would kind of feel a bit hypocrytical. I think for martial artists it is important to have control over your body both on the ground and in the air. My old instructor used to say that the 3 most important things (for us) are "Fitness, Agility and Rolling".
That aside, they are sooooo much fun, just trying and crashing, trying crashing, trying, Yeaaah i did one! I just love being in the air ;-)
Also, i saw an old video of the Japanese Shihan, when they were about my age (24), jumping all over the place doing stuff that I never thought I would see in Budo Taijutsu. That spurs me on even more :-)
Have a look at this guy.

Interesting :D
Jack Yerbody 19-12-2003, 10:12 Oh my god. The new video on the first page of the site!!! Especially the last move - a triple rotation!
Mind you, a good punch up the bracket and he wouldn't be so bloody fancy :D
I'm a freestyle kickboxer, i fight and train for Ali Freestyle Kickboxing for the Hallam Uni..
I'm just getting back into my training, as i had a bad road accident earlier last year.
My new years resolution is to get into the gymnastics side of martial arts, and start training in that. Styles such as Capouira and actual Gymnastics.
Anyone know of any places that are doing these?
Cheers. Kai.
Where is this gonna be held, these training sessions of kicks & flips etc? As its JUST what ive been looking for, ive wanted to start training with Ashley beck, yet i had a road accident last year, and ive just started to get back into fitness again.
Hi Lista,
Is this anything to do with 'tricks n flips':

Sorry, I was under the impression that you had found just what you were looking for or did I read that wrong?
U got a copy of what u deleted? So i can repost it rather than retyping it all out? Cheers
No copy I'm afraid. I merged yours with the this because this one was here first.
No probs mate, ive redone the post anyways! :-)
So, when is all this gonna happen then? We gonna arrange a night where we all meetup, get to know each other, and teach other stuff we've learnt? Help each other etc? Can be a small community.
2minds are better than one, 6 are better than 2 for idea's & help!
I'd be interested in doing something again, esp. if it involved gymnastics :)
jamie, where do u train anyways? What styles etc?

Hi Lista,
I did about 9 years training, but recently (about 12 months ago) stopped ...
I wouldn't like to say why I stopped ... or exactly what I was doing ... but I've been thinking of starting something up again ...
...and why can't you let on what styles your practise, you think your in the Mi6 or something?
LOL ...
NO ... I'm not in the Mi6 or anything like that.
I am just not going to say what I did (or explain why I won't let on) ... in such a public place as this forum.
I don't have a problem talking about these things in private with people I know and trust ... but right now ... I don't know you from Adam.

Cool, more interested people. I will try and organise a regular session starting either this month or begining of feb. We got the Hallam Uni Gym booked before christmas for a load of us on a saturday afternoon, so if that is ok for everyone i could get some dates. Unfortunatley, We are quite busy organising our own dojo at the moment, so i havnt really had time to organise anything :-)
Speaking of which, I have been doing Budo Tiajutsu for 4 years now, nothing else really, apart from a few sample sessions of other things.
So, Jamie, ur tryin to hide ur specialities i take it, incase u fight again?

Sounds good, can you make a note of mobile numbers, and when its arranged, txt everyone with a date/ price of hire etc/ location? Use o2.co.uk to mass txt everyone, as i may stop using the net for abit pretty soon?
battouchan 07-01-2004, 14:41 No probs. Ill do that.
send us an email with your number.
battouchan@tombodojo.co.uk
Ill try and get a website set up with dates, costs, maps etc.
Ive mailed u mate...
There gonna be an actual teacher then, or we just basically all gettin together helpin each other out? Basically teaching all.
battouchan 07-01-2004, 15:39 No teacher. Just a group of people helping out each other.
I basically wanted to do this, cause i wanted a place where i could practice that has crash mats so i could just get used to fliping. I thought that there is likely to be others in sheffield who are interested.
I can do a somersault and a handspring, thats about it really :-(

I'd like to attend too please battouchan ... well ... that's if Lista can restrain himself from launching flying spinning kicks at my head ;)
Afraid I can't manage a sumersault though ... not without landing on my bum !!
Be fun to try tho ...
Jamie, i was just refering to it is possible to land spinning kicks... Ive had many land on me. Woke up on my neck..
Lista ... no problem mate :-)
My take is ... if you're flighted or on one leg (the other being at your opponents head height) ... then you don't have much connection with planet earth ... and a skilled opponent may easily force you off balance.
Maybe I have in my mind different types of scenarios to you ... I'm thinking more of an "isolated exercise in training hall" scenario ... and not "mid fight" ... where I agree anything could happen.
Yea. Fair enough, but if i land that kick, he aint gonna have much connection with planet Earth either.
what the hells hapenin with this then? Ive found out the movement sports hall at hallam is £20 to rent per hour..
battouchan 16-01-2004, 13:05 The movement studio hasnt got crash mats or baby trampolines, whereas the gym has.
Ok. I need to check the availability but, saturday 31st or the 7th from 4-6 sound good? I think that is just £15 per hour.
battouchan 16-01-2004, 13:11 Okay, just reserved, Saturday 31st 5-7pm at Pearson Bulding Gym.
Is that ok for people.
battouchan 23-01-2004, 08:44 ok,
i have set up a site with some information on it at http://www.tricksnflips.co.uk
hope you can all make it.
Ahhhhhh, b******! I was at kickboxing Tuesday night, threw this high roundhouse, and ive bust my toe now! I caught his elbow!
So it'll have to be next month, not this one, but i'll still try and turn up though..
Dude, you've got my email etc, get in touch!
You guys may want to check this out. I havnt been and I know its not regular but I think it would be worth checking out.
