View Full Version : Wolfscote Dale Walk Sunday 8th March

I think we could re-name this walk 'A walk into the unknown', cos no-one amongst the regulars has ever been to this area before, or even knows where it is! But after looking at the walk description, and looking the area up on the Discover Derbyshire website, I've got to say that we maybe in for an absolutely stunning walk by the looks of it.
The walk is 7.5 miles long, and is graded by the AA as 'easy', with only a 550 foot ascent (compared with Alport Castles 2000feet) and follows well-defined paths through the beautiful Wolfscote Dale and Biggin Dale. There is a pub, the Waterloo Inn at Biggin 1/2 way round for a refreshment break. For more details of the walk go to www.theaa.com/travel/details/walk/420254.
The walk will start at 10.45 at the Tissington Trail car park by Stonepit Plantation, which is situated just beyond Alsop en le Dale on the A515 Buxton to Ashbourne road. I think the easiest way to get there from Sheffield is to firstly get to Bakewell, and when there take the A5055 which goes through Monyash until it reaches the A515. At this point we'll need to turn left towards Ashbourne, and the meeting point is then about 6 miles along this road.
As usual, can people who have spare places in their cars please say so, so we can do a bit of car-sharing.

Err. You do realise that part of the walk is less than 1Km from Milldale - the pretty village at the top of Dove Dale! The walk goes alongside the River Dove for part of the way.

Yes, it's in the walk description that the River Dove goes through Wolfscote Dale. Is there a particular reason you're pointing this out?

You described it as "'A walk into the unknown', cos no-one amongst the regulars has ever been to this area before". I was just pointing out that group's been very close to it, i.e. Dovedale, a couple of times.

Got you now, sorry I wasn't sure what you meant  When we walked Dovedale we met near the Isaak Walton Hotel which seems like it's a long way from Wolfscote Dale, but probably not!

Just in case any of the regulars are wondering who's leading the walk this week, well, in view of Neoterics continuing absence due to illness, I will be.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Neo incidentally. Don't try and rush back until you're properly fit and well will you fella :)

Follow us if you want. We've 2 cars that'll be coming down Halifax Road and on to Penistone Road at about 9.20. You might even be able to leave your car and car-share if you want. I'll pm you a suggestion of somewhere we can meet up.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I thought at one point that we would have rain every step of the way today but it held off after the pub stop, just!

It was a bit of a shame the weather was so horrid this morning as it detracted from the lovely scenery. Nice herons though! Definitely a walk for the summer months I think, although I expect it would be crowded then.

Cheers to everyone who turned up and added to the fun and to Scoobz for doing a sterling job as leader.

Many thanks to Devonwench and hubby for the lift - a mad suicidal dash across the duel carriageway saw us get the tram

I'm off for a bath now, photos will be posted tomorrow evening when I get back to my own computer.

The walk will probably start @ 10.30-11.00, and as Taxman says you and your children are welcome to come and join us, we've had new people come along on every walk since Christmas. Not sure if I'll get chance to start a thread for the walk tonight, if I don't start it today I'll stick it on tomorrow.

What a mix of a day:confused:!!

Has everyone dried out and warmed up now?

Shame that the weather tried it's best to spoil the beginning of the walk:rant:, but nothing could detract from the wonderful scenery; especially down by the river in the valley.

It was lovely to see the herons looking so at peace in their habitat, I was keeping an eye out for Ratty, Badger and Mole but with no luck:lol:

The pub break was really welcome as I was chilled to the bone as I'm sure other's were, loved Scoobz and Billysmum auditioning the staff for the murder mystery night:thumbsup:, oh and whatever happened to service with a smile?

I must also say that it was great to meet Devonwench+partner, I hope to see you again soon on another walk.

Finally thanks to scoobz for doing a great job as leader and to Billysmum for being a brilliant back marker.

See you all next Sunday:love:

Apols for all the questions!

Dogs are no problem, but there's only you who can decide whether the 7 yo can manage 5 miles (or more!). The Linacre walk is classified as an "easy" walk according to the AA just like todays walk. However, some of the walk today was far from easy although overall 2/3 of it was on good ground, which is probably why it was listed as easy. So whether Linacre really is easy, we'll have to see when we get there!
Another thing to bear in mind is that although we have regular stops, on good ground, like the walk round Dearne Wetlands last week, we can average over 3 mph, which might seem quite quick to some people and a stroll in the park to others. Leave it up to you!

shameless
08-03-2009, 19:53
I think we'll only bring the 7 year old if the weather is good. He managed 3 and a half miles today without complaint (other than getting cold), including some tricky bits and steep climbs/descents. No idea on walking speed, but I know we don't dawdle. If we do we'll just have to trail behind you!

Is the Linacre Walk the one out of the AA Peak Distric Walks Book then? Round the reservoirs, through Birley Brook, Wigley and up to Old Brampton? If so that is the same walk we had picked to do next week anyway and as you say is classed is easy.

Then again, we once did a Colne Valley walk out of the book that was classed as intermediate (probably a little ambitious at the time) and we felt like we climbing Mount Everest at some points!!!!

See you next week!

Had to succomb to tiredness before I got chance to put this weeks report in, so here we go now with a fully refreshed look back on yesterdays epic.
I thought it was a fantastic walk, and even though the weather caught me out and the wrong footwear were chosen at dawn, some severe mud problems didn't spoil the day for me, and neither did the arctic conditions. Having said that, what a welcome sight the Waterloo Inn at Biggin made for 16 soddened souls as it loomed up in the distance. Never has a pub been more needed, and once we got over, or should I say ignored the "take your boots off please" situation, we were made very welcome and bowls of soup and baskets of chips were eagerly devoured.
Wolfscote Dale was beautiful, and several people said we'll have to do it again in summer. Biggin Dale was a challenge due to the rocky footpaths and mud, and the Tissington Trail gave us some lovely views of the countryside, and got us thinking as to what it would have been like travelling on a train through it, high above the scenic valleys below.
A great day out then enjoyed by this hardy crew :- Village Owl, Taxman, Rivelin6, Die Hard, Gudigobla, Gudigobmum, Billysmum, Mrpedantic, Snow Don, Aufwindian, Devon Wench, Wenchman, Alligin, Agent Orange, Anne D, Scoobz.
