I have been many times, both as a patient and to accompany my late father on his many out- patient visits. I found the standards of care generally poor compared to Barnsley General where my dad spent the last 8 weeks of his life. Jon 27-06-2005, 10:02 My neice is a nurse she works at the Northern. analogkid 27-06-2005, 10:24 I havent seen many people actually WORKING at NGH. Generally the care at the NGH isn't that great and the only reason it managed three stars was because of the Hallamshire propping it up. antics 27-06-2005, 20:42 You try working there and see if you can do any better then *yawn* SteveWilson 27-06-2005, 20:53 I work for the hallamshire, and i hear stories all the time about the poor care of the hospitals inpatient wards. especially the wards for the elderly (of which you would think they were the most important) analogkid 27-06-2005, 20:58 Originally posted by antics You try working there and see if you can do any better then *yawn* I did, didn't like it, went to the Hallamshire.:) dirtybristow 27-06-2005, 21:30 I started work at NGH when I first came to Sheffield in '98. It was a dirty, depressing hovel staffed by people who on the whole were a bunch of "job's worths". The overall philosophy of management there is an authoritarian "thou shalt not" (...innovate, be creative, express dissatisfaction with the status quo, attempt to change or improve standards, better yourself). I moved to the Hallamshire in 2000 where the exact opposite pertains and had a great time until the merger, getting promoted, supported, developed and even graduating a Post Grad. Diploma in teaching. Then my boss sent me back to NGH in November last year to "fix" some problems. It wasn't any better. I have now left the NHS for for a career in academia. I'm sorry your old man had a bad time there but good on BDGH for getting good press from you! Not enough people sing the praises of the smaller hospitals around Sheffield despite the fact they do a fine job of giving honest to goodness good care to patients. They may not be world leaders in research and new health treatments, but people leave there happy and satisfied. crowefan 27-06-2005, 22:10 I worked on the spinal injury unit from 1990 to last month I can only speak for the spinal injury unit, which is only one of eleven in Britain. it was a hard, stressfull and amazing place in which to work. Most of the staff including the consultant medical staff are dedicated, hard working and talented specialists I left because I wanted a lifestyle in the country without the stresses of an city hospital ( i live in wales) but the main stress in hospital ( and any hospital!!!!!) especially for a ward manager (as I was) is the constant red tape and targets the trust inforces on you.oh and the occassional staff problem i was lucky enough to love the job i did for 16 years and not many people can say that before anyone bashes hospital and hospital staff, please take a deep breath wardy 28-06-2005, 07:05 Its just that i am going to be working there soon and just wondered what it was like.:) SteveWilson 28-06-2005, 08:13 I dont really think the nurses and support workers etc should be totally held to ransom because the pays **** and the hours are shizer! My friend used to be a support worker at the hallamshire. Working hours like 10pm til 8 am with only 30 mins break. Also having to work weekends:( (not the job for me) Spending all her time, wiping up excrement, urine, sick, blood, puss. Being abused by patients, changing dressings, having to watch people die, screaming in pains etc etc. All for just £700 a month, if you ask me i would have told them to stick it up thier arse! They need more indians and less chiefs in the nhs. to many people trying to implement new "target schemes" and meeting "patient deadlines" fire some of them, spend more money on patient care. i.e more nursing staff!!!!!!!! Nimrod 28-06-2005, 09:25 I am not in the habit of bashing hospital staff- but the difference in care between Barnsley and NGH is so vast. Dad was a miner with "the dust", when he had a spell as an in-patient at NGH it was in the old Vickers Ward. What an appalling place that is, its like something out of a Dickens novel. He could be in there a week without seeing a doctor. Oxygen was obviously rationed even though he was fighting to breathe and in pain. He was admitted to Barnsley Hospital one Sunday, simply because the emergency ambulance came from there and what a difference we saw. It was as good as you would expect if you "went private". Oxygen given to make him relax, pain killers given to help him sleep, and the kindest people on Gods earth looking after him. A city like Sheffield deserves better than wards like Vickers. SteveWilson 28-06-2005, 09:41 Yeah but thats what the goverment wants now, more super hospitals like ngh. The hallamshire is quite confined for growth as there is no room to expand, so you will see more things move over to the ngh in the years to come. What i think will happen is, that the hallamshire will end up as an out patient based hospital, where as the ngh will be all in-patient based. any thoughts? ilaria 28-06-2005, 10:11 my ex boyfriends mum works there shes a domestic nurse on huntmans building nr accident and emergency.whenever i had an accident or became ill i went there and see her. stoofa 28-06-2005, 10:45 I work across both the Hallamshire and Northern and I think the environment and the buildings have a lot to do with perceptions. The newer bits of the Northern are great - up there with the best in the NHS - but it's like a load of small hospitals on one site and the older bits are not conducive to the best care. The hospital also deals with so much emergency work it's untrue. The other hospitals in SY have nothing like the pressure that the Northern comes under and all the complex work from across South Yorks is sent to Sheffield. The Hallamshire, (despite being a bit of an eyesore on the skyline!) is in the main a pretty good design for a hospital. The old Vickers Wards at the Northern are being replaced at the moment - I think people will see a huge improvement once the new wards open and other older bits are being rebuilt at the moment as well. In response to Steve's point - I reckon the Royal Hallamshire will continue to do a lot of the specialist surgical and medical work and things won't change too much - but you're right that there's no room at all left to expand there. As with all the posts about hospitals, there's so much great stuff going on that often gets forgotten and wonderful - often life-saving - work going on every minute of every single day as well. skala 28-06-2005, 15:09 I work in Medical Records at the northern! People dont realise just how hard we work! Where you going to work Wardy? wardy 28-06-2005, 19:01 i will be working in catering huntsmen dinning room stoofa 28-06-2005, 19:08 Huntsman dining room = best fried breakfast in Sheffield! I left 3 years ago after about 15 years Joanna 29-06-2005, 17:03 My boyfriend's sister works there, doing some kind of research. dirtybristow 29-06-2005, 18:01 Originally posted by crowefan before anyone bashes hospital and hospital staff, please take a deep breath I don't "bash" hospitals, or their staff. Wardy asked what it was like and I told him my personal experience. It stirkes me that the fact that I got along just fine in 6 differnet hospitals around the country but found my development seriously arrested at NGH speaks volumes about the way the hospital is run. Did I miss out cronyism at the middle management level? I think I did. stoofa 29-06-2005, 22:57 What did you do at the NGH/RHH dirty? wardy 01-07-2005, 19:59 where do you work stoofa? roughy101 01-07-2005, 20:46 Originally posted by wardy does anyone on here work at the northern general hospital? wardy why are you asking wardy 02-07-2005, 07:05 just wondering thats all why? |
