I'm after taking my young'un to London in August and have been searching for cheap deals. Cheapest I've found so far are £36 for both via Midland Mainline but I'm after going via Doncaster (GNER) because it's faster etc. Has anyone seen any special offers ?
Thanks
Answering my own question.....
Found it at last. £15 return each via Midland Mainline
Can't be bad

it won't be much help if there is only two of you but i just got a special deal
We are travelling to London on July 8th at 6:30pm and returning on July 10th at 8:30 pm and we got 4 tickets for £48
good going me thinks, if you go to the train station they can tell you all the offers but the queues are horredous. You can ring up midland mainline but i dont no the number (sorry) or you can visit
www.midlandmainline.com- i dont recomend this site tho
Alternatively you could go on the mega bus- £2 return each +50p booking fee
I have used this numerous occasions and we have always got on well- its a right bargin!
The mega bus £2 return to London?? Wow that is a fantastic deal. Where do I book? I've never heard of it.
I know Midland Mainline sometimes do special offers of around £10 each way to London, or then there's the '4sight' offer where four people travel for something like £40 and they offer an upgrade to 1st class for an additional £10 per person I think.
Trouble with GNER is that you have to get to Doncaster, but it is faster (and less bumpy) but depends how easy it is for you to get to Doncaster as to whether it's worth it or not.
http://www.megabus.com I keep promising I will try it out but haven't yet. Think the prices are higher at peak times of the year but otherwise you can't go wrong £5 for 2 of you to get to London.
I got a ticket to London with National Express for £1. They're called funfares, and if you check on their website it'll tell you which service they're available on. There seems to be at least one a day whan I last looked. www.nationalexpress.co.uk
When I looked into travelling on the mega bus, it only seemed to stop at Meadowhall, not the city centre. And you had to pay 50p booking fee. Huh!!

The mega bus get my vote every time! If it was up to me we would be going on it on our next trip to London but my parents wanted to go by train- their money i guess!
As for the mega bus- this is my experience of it.
The £1 tickets are only available in advance of about 2 or 3 weeks. We booked a week in advance and it cost us something like £14 return each.
The bus leaves the Adsetts Centre in the city centre at 0555 and gets to London Greenline (2 mins from victoria) at 1015- You get a lil mini tour round london for this too :P as the bus drives right through the centre of London.
The return bus is at 1815 from Greenline getting to sheffield at something like 2215 i forgot exactly.
I couldnt recomend the journey enough to london it is quiet peaceful and easy to rest before your big day trekking but on the way back it is a different story! I have used the company many times and it has always been very busy and full- every seat taken on the bus.
I, put up with this as it doesnt bother me too much and you cant really grumble for £2!
The bus is just an ordinary double decker bus.
To get tickets go to www.megabus.com then type in all your details. It is a really simple and easy to use website- unlike midland mainline!
EDIT: The bus also picks up at chesterfield and it stops at a services near leeds i think where you have to change busses because the bus is actually Leeds-London. The change is simple and easy and no complicated messing! Its basically getting off one bus and getting onto the one parked next to it!

anyone travelling to london should take the train. its faster than road and there are some excellent deals available if you pre-book. the trains are usually on time and are comfortable. they have excellent catering facilities and even complementary tea and coffee. and the staff are nice too. im not biased its just i travel on mml everyday... because i work for them.

And for an extra seven quid or so, I can travel to Sheffield in half the time.
You pay peanuts, you get monkies!
