just been reading the environmental agencies web site to see when the closed season is and its kinda confused me. am i right in thinking there is no closed season on canals any more?? also will the councils free venues be open ie hilsborough and rivlin

also when is the closed season on rivers as i was having a quick skim through angling times and it said something about an extra month to the season

I have not been fishing in years so this may be out of date.

There is no closed season on still water any longer.
The closed season on rivers only applies to certain areas i the UK. Sheffield not being one of them. You can not however, fish for certain species of fish during certain times of year. If you happen to catch a fish that is out of season you are to release the fish without taking it out of the water.

In practice i always thought this was silly. How can you stop a Trout taking a bunch of maggots when they are out of season? and if you did hook one, why on earth would you not take it out of the water to unhook it? Having the fish in your hands is a lot more efficient that tugging away at the fish while it is splashing about at the waters edge.

In certain parts of the UK Rivers do not have a close season. Stillwaters do remain open but only if the society that own's them decide's to keep it open, When i used to fish on the Yately Complex all of the lakes bar the South Lake would close.
I have'nt read anything about an extra month, so am guessing that the closed season will be as always 15th March - 16th June

I used to love going back onto my waters after the closed season, getting to the water on the 15th June and setting up, then sitting in anticipation for midnight.

0742sheff, your bit about fishing for a certain species mainly applies to Trout and Pike fishing, Pike can not be fished for using dead or live bait until October, and the same applies for Trout if using a fly, although the dates are different to Pike.
However you are allowed to fish for Pike through out the year using spinner's and plug's etc........

I wouldn't have thought trout int' don would be havin' much fun so at least allow then a couple of months what bit of pleasure they can get out of life. Unless you know how to tickle a trout, it might like that.

You cant beat it benson, bunking off work, getting to your special swim that you've baited up for the last 3months, then just sitting back and taking in all that nature has to offer, before getting your head down for a while. Then tick tick tick and bang Midnight, in goes the bait, then the waiting game. Thats what it's all about.

I'll never forget about 5yr ago i fished Redmire pool for the first time on the opening night, just being there was awesome but add too that feeling of the opening night of the season and you've got the greatest feeling on earth, only beaten by when i had Mary at 49lb 9 from Wraysbury.
