View Full Version : Can you recommend me a dog food please?
My little yorkie seems to have a sensitive stomach and it seems to be 'upset' every other week.
He currently has Bakers dried food.
Has it's happening yet again I am thinking that changing his food might help.
Any recommendations?
Thank you.
there are a few 'sensitive' foods available
Brude's currently eating a James Wellbeloved one supplied by Lotti at Pawsitively Pets
you don't change the flavour each time you shop do you?
some probiotic yoghurt can help too
Thank you. Errr I have to say I do change the flavour, I didn't want him to get bored!
I keep reading about Lottis shop, but I don't know where it is?
He does like to lick out yoghurt pots, will have to give the probiotics a go too
:)
don't change the flavour, they don't get bored ;)
Brude used to have really bad wind if we couldn't get his favourite rabbit and duck, then when we swapped back again we'd have the same thing all over again
Lotti's shop is the next block out of town along abbeydale road than that shop that's stuffed to the gunnells with antiques and brick-a-brack, or pm her and see if she's doing any deliveries in your area
helenasq 24-02-2009, 17:46 Lottie's shop is on London Road ( I think it's 92 but not 100% sure)
it's not london road. it's just after where london road heads off left towards chesterfield road. It's on Abbeydale Road (92ish sounds about right though, and comes out about right on the map)

bakers is not a great food for dogs, its full of additives and colourants. JWB is supposed ot be good but havent tried myself, we use wainwrights only available from pets at home and have had great success with it, some of my greyhounds have terribkle sensitive tummies but they suit this food just fine. annax
dregar41 24-02-2009, 18:41 Chappie, its one of the best dog foods around and not expensive. go for the dried stuff.
ive got mine on hills chicken , im still not satisfied. Alfies tear stains are terrible since going on it and the wind is awful!! ( bulldogs do struggle with the parps though) but they arent being sick and there skin is fab now.
So might perserve for now !! they do a sensitive brand as well
xx
chicken gives Brude bad wind too - which is why he's now eating duck (welbeloved don't seem to do rabbit)
Molly's on raw minced tripe or liver with mixer biscuits and this seems to suit her far better than every dried food we tried (and we tried dozens over 18 months). She struggled with constant diarrhoea when she was on them and couldn't be bothered with food, but now she eats a proper meal and has firm poos just like she's meant to.

I will never feed this cheap muck again i am afraid it did nothing for my dogs other than make them unwell.
We now feed burns ethical, holistic and you know exactly what you are feeding. Also due to the amounts i now find it cheaper than chappie.
Please go for a good quality food that does not have colourants and additives. You will straight away see an improvement by doing this :)
Oh one of mine also has probiotic everyday due to a bad tummy combined with the burns he is 100% better.
our JRT used to have chappie as it was the only thing (then) that wasn't too rich for him

Aah , might try another flavour then, mind you you get used to the wind after a while !! visitors notice it more !!!
candles help - they burn the gas ;) :gag:
all my four is on raw mince and chicken wings, admittedly i mix chappie with the mince for my german shep as she suffers from EPI,and put her enzymes in it
I still have a head full of sedation so won't bother trying to help with any advice but my shop is 98 Abbeydale Road :) It's as you turn onto Abbeydale Road from London Road after Moonlight (curtain and blinds).
Hope that helps! I won't be there this week (as the Northern General appear to be keeping me) but the shop is open as I have cover and I will definitely be back next week! (even if I have to make a run for it!)
sheff290 24-02-2009, 22:29 using bakers is like giving your child sweets like skittles with loads of e numbers in thats why the biscuits are coloured its dye, they can make your dog very hyper, i would also try royal canin seen as i am a avid royal canin fan they do a food just for yorkies, otherwise burns is a good food and very reasonably priced
Oh I have free yorkie samples (see, sedated head - I'm not even reading full posts) if you pop into the shop (even while I'm not there) and ask whoever's in there at the time (could be my good old dad or gran!) for a sample of royal canin yorkie, I think there's actually some on the shelves but if not, there's a big box under the counter (you may have to remind them that it's under the counter in a box) and there should be some in there!
edit: also have free burns samples (try mini bites as well as some normal ones - don't get canine extra or high energy lamb they're for big growing dogs)
Also grab a free sample bag of royal canin mini as well as the yorkie to try, they're all free so take one of everything to see how you get on!
Depending on your yorkies age depends on what food he can have - I don't think they do yorkie junior (under 10 months) but then, I could be wrong as I'm not exactly with it tonight) but if yours is under 10 months you would feed mini junior until 10 months and then put onto either mini adult or yorkie adult :)
Wow thank you all for your suggestions.
I will definitely have a trip to the shop Lotti, thank you.
Hope you feel better soon X
Just a little update:)
Lotti, went to the shop and bought a bag of RC mini, I think that's what it's called. Well after sniffing it a few times he turned his nose up grrr. Kept removing it and eventually he got the message and ate it:D He's had three lots and so far so good.
I'll be in on Monday for some yorkie food as your Dad is getting some for me:D
Oh and he's not old LOL
Eddy had a lot to say to the postman:D
wwcrazy, I thought it was you that went in! I told him he should've given you some samples but he said you'd bought some to put you on.
He's checked with the wholesalers and they've put a bag to the side to make sure it's there when he goes for me on Sunday because I'm still in!
Thanks for popping in, hope he gets on ok with the yorkie stuff when it comes :D
It's usually T that makes a big fuss when the postman enters, whereas Eddy has a lot to say to anyone but he just doesn't know what it is he's saying! haha!
twibstix 26-02-2009, 12:43 Why not try Rangers - good range, suitable for most of ours (and we feed at least 5 different diets to 11 dogs). Or Chudleighs
My westie Kizzy has a sensitive tummy too, we had to keep taking her to the vets because she kept throwing up lots, and they said it was probably her food, so we changed it from pedigree better by nature to chappie dry mix and now she's fine. :)
I think when the vet recomended chappie they meant the tinned stuff, but that stuff doesn't smell too good!
Also the vet told us to mix some water into the dry mix, coz she might have been sick because she wasn't digesting it properly.
But then a non vet told us that doing it that way is like giving dogs weetabix and that it'll stick to their teeth like it sticks to a bowl, so they said to give her lots of chews too.
Not sure if your yorkie could be having the same problem!
Hope the food you've found now solves the problem. :)
I have a dog that has EPI, and the only food that she can tolerate and is tasty enough to disguise the enzymes is tinned chappie. I overcame all my prejudices about it, to have a healthy pet. JWB is now owned by a huge pet food company and many people on another pet forum have had problems with it, esp. the lamb and rice.
Always allow a week on one food to give the gut time to get used to it.
Bonio, we tried Chappie for my old guy with dodgy guts - on the vet's recommendation. It didn't work for him at all but I do accept it works well for some. In general I try to stock the higher quality end of foods in my shop (although will stock what people want to be honest) but I did get Chappie right from the start because despite it being cheap, it is good for lots of dogs.
Unfortunately neither the tins nor dry do any good for my old lad.
well after tring RC over the last few weeks Im not convinced that it's totally the answer. He has been on RC alone (no rice or pasta added) for the last two days and I can hear his tummy squelshing once again. Although he seems ok in himself.
Been having a read up about Burns, is it much different to RC?
Thanks
hodgepig66 17-03-2009, 20:15 burns is fantastic stuff i swear by it for both my cats and dogs and wouldn't use any other dried food now.......avoid any food that has colourings in it not good...look at what the food has in it most of the time it's 4% animal derivatives yuk not good.....what have you to lose by giving it a go.....once you have found a food suitable for your dog stick with. where people go wrong is by trying loads of different brands, just keeps the dogs stomach upset all the time........good luck
gabzball 17-03-2009, 21:32 I would try hills science or burns. My dog turned her little nose up too but im a little bit mean and thought if shes hungry enough she'll eat it, she does now, with her chicken hehe. But always firm poopy. Good luck
