View Full Version : 2 new labrador puppies, Winston and Monty
espadrille 23-02-2009, 12:12 We have 2 puppies aged 9 weeks and of course they are a handful. I am keen to get them out for a walk but they have to have final jab in 1 week.
I assumed that after that I could take them out but vet said to socialise them forst with other dogs that we know.
Why am I unable to take them out after their 2nd jabs, does anyone know?
cuddlycats 23-02-2009, 12:24 I think you are advised to wait 2 weeks after 2nd jab so their immune system can build up its defense.
As for socialising 1st, i found the best way to do this was on walks, what better way to meet others.
Good luck anyway, sounds like you have got yours handsful!

Our vets have always said that pups are "good to go" as soon as they have had their second jab (as they still have some immunisation from the bitch too).
We will be holding puppy parties soon if anyone is interested, excellent fun for all involved.
you got TWO puppies at once?
are you mad? :hihi:
Brude was always the most popular dog at training classes for people to introduce pups to, as he's so 'steady' with them (and the right size too :D)
If you fancy meeting up, give us a shout
mummysaz21 23-02-2009, 15:39 my dog could do with a bit of socialisation but she isent a pup lol

We were going to get two westie puppies when we got Kizzy, I'm so glad we only got one though! The breeder even said to us get one first then if we think we can cope, get another one in a years time, and she said she had a old couple ring her up wanting two westie puppies. :o She wouldn't let them though which I thought was good of her.
We didn't take Kizzy to the puppy parties but we wish we did, because then she grew up without really seeing any other dogs, so then when she did, she'd bark and growl at them.

So where are the photos????
I can't think how you're supposed to socialise them without taking them out, usually if you're introducing dogs to each other, you do it on "neutral" ground, not on one of them's territory.
espadrille 23-02-2009, 18:29 Re the photos, I will try to get my daughter to post some soon.
Thanks for the advice. They are doing Ok by the way.l
another tip - make sure you make time to train them both separately - even if it's only five mins each a couple of times a day
if dogs have each other, they don't need to bother with you overmuch, so you need to establish a relationship/bond with them both separately else you'll have trouble with training
espadrille 12-03-2009, 18:33 Can I ask some advice re toilet training(so to speak!)
When our puppies are outside and the door is shut, they do their business outside and we see that they have done something. When we let them back in they begin to wee all over the floors inside, even though they have done it outside. We tell them that this is naughty and of course dont reward them.
They seem to be getting it and then all of a sudden go back to doing it inside.
Any tips please?
We are walking them twice a day at the moment, 10 mins in morning and 10 mins at night according to vets instructions.
I was told 10-14 days following injections... and personally would leave it at least a week - better safe than sorry. At 9 weeks, they have very little, if any natural immunity left.
As others have said socialisation out on walks but do make sure to ask the owners first. At this stage a bad encounter can really affect a pup so everything has to be positive.
Also work on socialisation with others too, not just dogs - children, people, men with beards, people with umbrellas etc. etc.
A good book is before and after getting your puppy by Ian Dunbar - I believe that lists all sorts of socialisation opportunities that you may not think about.
Personally, as far as the toilet training is concerned I would go out with them - not let them out, reward as soon as they toilet and then bring them back in with you. If they start to go again inside, pick them up, put them outside. Don't say anything to them when they toilet inside - it's still attention to them and they don't understand 'that's naughty'.
(Sorry just realised that you posted about when to walk them some time ago but am leaving my comments for anyone else interested!)

Thanks for that.they are now nearly 12 weeks old.
espadrille 15-04-2009, 11:01 I would like some more advice please. Monty and Winston are now about 15 weeks old and they go to Bolehill for a walk every morning and evening.
They are brothers and they play fight a lot.
The problem that I am having is that when they are on the way back home, they start to fight in the middle of the walk and as they are much stronger now I am finding it hard to separate them and control them. I make them sit and stay but then when we walk off again they just begin fighting again and this goes on until we get back to my house.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Sorry .My daughter aged 13 said she would take some. I will ask her again.
I don't really think there's a huge amount you can do... a headcollar on each may help if you can handle it so that you can turn their heads away from each other.
Other than that it's a sharp 'no!' or 'Ah!' and doing what you're already doing...
I know how hard it is to hold two large dogs away from each other when they want to get to each other!

I have this problem with my two pups, but at a year old they are now slightly better, the sparring really frays your nerves doesnt it? and I find the noise intolerable at times when we are out
I consider myself lucky that mine never did it walking onlead they only do it once they are let off to play.
The best thing that I have found is to distract them, throw a ball or frisby anything to break the cycle, that has made huge improvements with my two.
For the trip home try to teach them to carry something (should be a good thing for them with being labs too) and as lotti suggests a head collar will probably help, and try to get someone to help for a while so that they can walk separately, they will learn some manners far better that way than walking side by side, Strix is right too the more time spent walking and training apart the better for them at this stage.
espadrille 15-04-2009, 14:01 That seems like a good idea to walk with them seperately. I will try that tomorrow and see what happens. I will also try to take something for them to carry.
It looks so cute as Monty who is now trying to assert himself grabs hold of Winstons lead and walks with it in his mouth to try to establish some control over winston who is the more dominant one.!

I wouldn't let Monty do that either, don't let the cute factor make you forget what your aiming for, really walking onlead is not the time for playing or being disobedient, it could potentially put you or the dogs in danger one day.
