As far as I know the Beatles.

I came across the Dead when I started using a US based bulletin board system in the mid to late 1980s called 'The Well'. That was full of Deadheads.

when i was working in the states last year my boss went to one of their concerts and said it was just plain strange. people were just all off their heads and doing strange dances to the music. she said it was like being involved in some sort of cult thing.

They're hippies.

Should explain it all.

The Dead started life in San Franciso and became associated with the psychedelic drug scene.

The fact that any Deadhead over 50 is still coherent is probably an indication of the fierce loyalty and staying power of the fans. :)

Seriously, Deadheads are well known for their almost fanatical devotion to the Dead.

Don Henley wrote about them in 85

Out on the road today, I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac.
A little voice inside my head said "Don't look back, you can never look back."
I thought I knew what love was. What did I know?
Those days are gone forever. I should just let them go but...

They're also still quite big in parts of the US contemporary counter culture and cyberculture circles.

I remember the Henley song.

There was a re-make of the song recently - can't remember the band - but they updated that line to 'Black Flag' sticker on a Cadillac.

Quite like Black Flag as well!!

Briliant stuff.

Have you listened to John Oswald's (of plunderphonics fame) 2 hour collaborative remix of 'Dark Star'? Dark Star is almost their signature track in many ways, the first one they really left open ended by design.

Usually its between 5 and 50 minutes long when the Dead play it.

The Dead gave Oswald the key to their archives and he went to work, splicing and mixing from thousands of live performances of dark star between 1968 and 1993.

It's called "Grayfolded". Its a double CD, 2 hours long, And its brilliant. http://tinyurl.com/9ecuj

As for other dead stuff, Europe 72 has to be my favourite just for that sublime 15 minute live recording of 'Truckin'

I'm no deadhead, but I too saw the light, and they have got to be the only band to actively encourage live bootlegging!

It was sad when Gerry died, as it really looked like he had got it back together again, and the guitar playing was really coming along.

I haven't heard much of their stuff but liked what I've heard. What was the name of the video which had them playing live but in skeleton form ?

Although both bands had been around for a couple of years before, the Beatles' first LP was March 1963, whereas the Dead's debut album appeared in late 1967. Four years may not seem like much in today's stagnant musical environment, but back in the 60s it was a LIFETIME.

Why do you ask? There's no comparison really. The Beatles were the supreme melodic pop band and masters of the 3 minute pop single (although their LPs were uniformly excellent too).

Meanwhile the Grateful Dead were the archetypical psychedelic "jam" band, specialising in extended improvisational pieces that would sometimes last 30 minutes or more. Much of it sounded like aimless noodling to me. I much preferred the more powerful improvisational work by Cream.

Which reminds me of a Grateful Dead joke:

What do Deadheads say when the drugs wear off?

What's that f**king awful music?

That could be Touch Of Grey from 1987, their only hit single complete with MTV style video clip

I used to think the Grateful Dead were a monster rock devil worshipping grungy band......which isn't true...

I saw Phil Lesh (the bass player) and Friends (mostly people from the Dave Matthews band) in San Francisco about a month ago.....

It was a similar experience to going to a Dance Music club where everyone is high and the music takes you all over the place.... Their kind of music obviously contributed towards what Dance Music and it's culture is today....

Anyway I'm boring myself now.

How many Deadheads does it take to change a lightbulb??

None. They let it burn out and then follow it around for 35 years....

High

In my opinion the Dead are the best Rock 'n' Roll band in the world..but I am a DeadHead, so, perhaps a little unbiased...

...I could go on for hours like a dead concert, but they were fundamental in the development of everything we got now!!!

Even played in a grateful dead cover band called The cosmic charlies :0)

If ya wanna know anything just pm me :0) I'd add some links but I'm not allowed!!

I'm in touch with up to 30 dead heads, so if ya want any shows etc.

Q: Where do you hide your drugs when dead heads come and stay ????
A: Under the soap !!!

love Richy

I think the Dead hit their peak in 69/70 with the "Live Dead" album, and, for my money, their best two studio albums - "Workingmans Dead" and "American Beauty" (imagine any band nowadays releasing albums in a year!).

Certainly recommend those for anybody wanting to give the Dead a try.

You can often pick them up for £5 a time in FOPP.

Keep on truckin'..................
