Are there any amateur wrestling clubs in Sheffield for adults?

(Not professional wrestling or BJJ/mma grappling)

Nothing listed on Google for Sheffield wrestling clubs, although if you're willing to go out of Town, I know that Doncaster based 1 Pro Wrestling has a wrestling Academy, based at the Granby House Hotel iirc.

Have a look on here (http://www.oneprowrestling.com) for details.

Hiya, we don't have a wrestling club, but we have Sean (one of the Great Britain wrestling coaches in Beijing) taking a wrestling class at the Forge on a Friday at 6.30pm. It is mostly the BJJ guys and girls that train but everyone is welcome. Cheers

just to add to noels post, Shawn teaches freestyle wrestling and thats all, its not a BJJ class focusing on takedowns, its wrestling.

Just to add some detail on the wrestling coach at the Forge. He is the current GB Team manager and technical director for the British Amateur Wrestling Association. He has competed at the highest level and been involved in the GB team for most of his adult life. He learned to wrestle in Matlock and earned a wrestling scholarship to an American College I think he spent 4 years in total, 2 in Kansas and 2 in Virginia. He has been in several Olympic Teams won at least one Commonwealth silver medal (I think it was two silvers but can't be sure). Oh yeah he also won the national title at least 4 times (again it could be 6 I can't be sure). As you can tell though he is a proven high level competitor and coach and as Barragergus said he is solely coaching freestyle wrestling.

Thanks for the info- I notice though that the session @ the Forge @ 6.30 is listed on the 'class schedule' page as- 'Adults Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Gi'??

Ben at 393? I think you mean the pro wrestling club there are no amateur wrestlers at 393. There are however the shoot wrestlers at 393 but that's ran by Pep. It's a great club with friendly guys they train Tues and Friday ay 730. It's not wholly wrestling however they mix in stand up striking and submissions. Depends what your after, I can recommend both.

So, is this an actual amateur wrestling lesson, or, more of a thing for BJJ/mma-ers who want to incorporate some amateur wrestling moves into their repertoire?

Also, when it comes to sparring, is there an emphasis on matching weights?

(I ask this cos a friend of my who's very keen on MMA decided to have a go and, on his first session got put up against an 18-stone bouncer type and ended up with a cracked rib: I do fully understand the reasoning behind that, in that it's self-defence training and, in real situations, your attacker could be a lot bigger than you- however, my focus is less on self-defence and more on not getting damaged during the actual training)

Yes, It's an actual amateur wrestling club, sparring tends to be done between similar sized people but there aren't any real monsters, the biggest being a lad called Paul, not you Bjjman!, but he has a really good attitude and does't smash anyone. It's a great session, very technical with a good bunch of guys to train with. Come down and have a look your more than welcome.

i dont remember that, i think i'm one of the bigger guys there and i can say we dont use strengh over technique one of the best guys at wrestling is a kid called majid and ive got about 3 stone on him.

I don't know which club it was- one of the sheffield mma/bjj clubs.

(Apologies for not making that more clear in the original post)

And I said it was a 'cracked rib'- not sure if it was actually broken- but he did have to have time off work and was out of action for several weeks.

Of course, in any kind of contact sport/self-defence there's always potential for those kind of injuries- i was just very surprised that, on his first session as a complete beginner, he'd be grappling with someone so much heavier.

Don't worry mismatches are not really what we do and John watches us all like a hawk so no one gets a kicking. We all work and all understand that at the end of the day it's a hobby, not worth getting injured for.
