View Full Version : Where can I turn?
I have a 16 years old son who has ADHD, ASD AND LEARNING DISABILITY,
I am so needing help and support I don't know where to turn.
His behavior is affecting the all family, he is really hard work. He his depressed 1 minute then the next he is on the ramp page and explodes I don't know what to do, I have always cope with him with no help but now he is out of control and I cant cope with it. We are all treading on egg shells in case he goes off on one. He is unable to control his temper and he cant understand why i get upset and cry a lot he says that i am just being stupid.
Can any one help me before it's to late. (am ready for walking out)
KnittedNinja 20-02-2009, 23:12 Hi ang101, it's hard parenting teenagers at the best of times with all their moods and hormones, but you've got it harder than most with your son's extra problems.
I'm sorry I can't offer advice but I really hope you find some help and support soon.
Type 'Parent Lifeline Sheffield' into Google and have a look at what they can offer.
Best of luck xx
Have you already discussed this with your GP?
Does he have a managed diet?
Have you ever had any relief support?
gracejanet 21-02-2009, 07:12 I feel for you. my 18 year old has borderline personality disorder which leads to behaviour (violent towards me and property),and suicidal thoughts. in the past when hes been violent the only option i've had is the police who have not really been able to help, he did spend a night in the cells then got sent hope and attempted suicide. then went to a & e and sent home again an hour later. the gp advises not to do this again as police not equiped to cope but there doesn't seem any other agency in sheffield which will cope. yes we have therapy, counselling but they are not there in evenings or weekends so i have found no one to turn turn and no one has offered me any advice. sorry i can't be any more help.

FairyNormal 11-03-2009, 10:36 Hi Ang
I don't know where abouts in the city you live or if this kind of support is what you are looking for, but I belong to an excellent support group for parents of children with any kind of special needs or disability called Ray of Hope. We are a really friendly bunch who understand totally the stress and issues surrounding children with special needs. A lot of people in the group, myself included, have had similar experiences so can offer you support and hopefully some advice too.
If you are interested in coming to the group, we meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday inthemoneth at Eskdale Community Centre, Eskdale Close, Hillsborough (just near the sheff wed ground) You'd be more than welcome, so if you fancy it, drop me a message and I can give you more details.
Hang in there!

Bounty2009 13-03-2009, 14:48 Poor thing, sorry you are feeling down. I think you should discuss how you are feeling with your doctor and maybe they will be able to direct you to local support groups. There is a special place for parents of Kids with special needs here http://my.bounty.com/forums/Subject/143/1/1/Special-needs.htm - perhaps try there for some more advice/support. Hope you are doing ok xxx
Anja's mum 18-03-2009, 20:22 Hello Ang, I've just read your message and wonder how you have survived this long without getting support. My daughter has a learning disabiblity and I;v found since she was about 3 yrs old I have had to pester and badger to get what we want. I've also found it really helpful just to talk to other parents and compare notes. I would suggest you contact social services and get to see someone. Also Mencap at Norfolk Lodge, Park Grange Rd S2. there is also something called the Caring Sharing Project: scpoffice@sharingcaring.org.uk. They would be able to put you in touch with the right people. Can you talk to someone at your son's school for some advice. What does your GP say? Is he on any medication? If he goes to a special ned school are there other parents you can talk to. I hope you manage to get the support you need.

Meeting tomorrow come along
Nic Hawkwood 24-03-2009, 17:14 As a qualified counsellor I currently work in primary care at a GP’s surgery and also undertake private work. My name is Nicola, I am a warm, empathetic person and as a counsellor I am committed to helping my clients. I believe that a good, strong therapeutic relationship is vital to the counselling process and that everyone who comes to counselling is unique.
I have training and interests in different forms of counselling: therefore I take an integrative approach in my work. This involves working with several distinct models of counselling and psychotherapy and allows me to adapt my techniques to the personal problems that are unique to the individual. For example I am interested in Cognitive Based Therapy, which is used to identify unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour, and to work with the client to resolve these issues.
From receiving counselling myself, I know how difficult it can be to approach a counsellor, and I understand much of the anxiety that goes along with meeting for the first time. I am mindful of this and try as much as possible to put my clients at ease during the session.
My experience is of working with clients with a wide range of issues including:
•Depression
•Anxiety
•Sexual & Physical abuse
•Family relationship problems
•Eating disorders
•Suicidal thoughts
•Self Harm
•Trust & jealousy issues
•Inner conflicts
•Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
•Low self -esteem
•Negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours
