Anyone know what the situation is with taking bikes on trains? Are they allowed?

Depends on the operator and the type of train.

for example. Virgin trains have a special compartment for things like large luggage and bikes, bikes woold not be allowed anywhere else apart from this designated area.

They certainly used to be a few years back. I've been cycling out in the peak district and taken my bike on trains before

shouldn't this be in the slappers thread? (http://bike.urbanup.com/505643)

NOTE please do not click on the link if you are of a nervous disposition and are likely to be offended by slang usage.

I was getting on the train the other week, and a bloke wearing sandals was trying to get on.

The guard said to him " I dont care who your Father is, You are not getting on my train with that big wooded cross!"

I'm only going from sheffield to donkeyblaster, so not a massive trip really.

I've taken my bike on trains a few times, with virgin trains it needs to be booked into the guard van and so needs a ticket. (I don't think it costs anything.) so ask at the ticket office.

I've taken my bike on a central train with no guard van and i got a telling off.

I get on virgin trains everyday with my bike. In theory you should get a reservation from the ticket office. This has to be done the day before you travel (new rules). I never bother because I only go a couple of stops, there is one train manager who won't let me on everytime because he is a piece of s*** (its getting personal!). Otherwise they are very ameanable and will let you on as long as there's space. If you're going far I'd get a reservation

Midland mainline/GNER big compartment at the end - not so important to get a reservation.

Little trains - not a lot of room but they've all got allocated space. Reservation ability varies.

If you ever have to get a bus transfer for whatever reason you're screwed. Check this before you travel. The bus companies often won't let you on with a bike even if you have a reservation for the train.
