Frankly I couldn't care a jot for the film.

The remixed and remastered CD, through the headphones and laying in bed in the dark is much better!

The soundtrack is a timeless classic. And still scary!!

Me thinks I am super thick - never made the connection.

I agree with you - that soundtrack gives me goosebumps every single time.

I can remember when I first heard that album, it was my dads and I think he was really proud I had such good taste in music - just like him!

I hope the film is good, the teaser trailers have been quite interesting.

Unfortunately, Tom Cruise plays the same wooden part in almost every film, and Spielberg has made some real turkeys recently, like Minority Report.

So I'm preparing to be disappointed.

I think it would have been better if they had set it in the same era as the original book, or even the same country, but I suppose that would have reduced the opertunity for massive amounts of CGI's as America saves the world again.

A independent film company called Paragon have made a version of the film that is identical to the original book.

Cannot seem to get hold of a copy though.

There's an article on the Guardian.co.uk's website about how the marketing of the film could mean it's gonna be a stinker.

They haven't let any journalists review it yet, Tom Cruise hasn't hardly talked about the movie in all of the interviews he's done etc etc....

OK dont read this if you dont want my feelings after seeing the film !......

Was a bit disappointed with choice of the voice of the narrator [but then I was comparing it to CD of war of the worlds ] and changing the words of opening scenes - Mr Speilberg - it it aint broke, dont fix it !

Film started off with good comic moments [timing really is everything] and then the special FX kicked in. Really felt I was there in some scenes !

Plot was OK and actually enjoyed Tom Cruise acting [although one scene annoyed the hell outta me !]. The girl that is in it is as great as ever [cant remember name]

Final scene may be confusing to some - wasnt as obvious what had happened as in some other versions.

Think its best to go see this with an empty mind - so as not to prejudice yourself - I kept comparing the film to the CD etc and also to ET/close encounters of 3rd kind [there are a few scenes that reminded me of each of them]

There are some bits like the previous versions, and some parts reminded me of some sci-fi B movie that I loved as a kid but cant remember the name of now [Grrr !]. Will probably get this on DVD when its out

During the trailers they had clips of Fab Four and also King Kong - first looks great, second looks like it could be just OK - was disappointed by the CGI :(

robbie
30-06-2005, 20:47
dude, the narrator is Morgan Freeman!!!!!

went today and thought it was very good. I wasn't expecting much but it really is a must-see piece of cinema.

the story runs really well ()especially the first half)

the effects are absolutely by far and away the best I've ever seen.

Cruise wasn't too annoying :D

it did vear towards sentimentality at times (and believe me I cannot bear to watch AI) but managed to not fall into that trap.

and as for the Fantastic Four trailer -oh dear.

Kong looks incredible though.

Kry10

The only things that bugged me is the alterations, as you said, too many people will be comparing it to what they already know.

Changing the prologue lyrics was the first let down, but, changing Ogilvy to be the person making the underground lair instead of it being the Artilleryman, who didn't feature at all, was, well, a shame, Ogilvy was supposed to be an Astronomer who refutes any possibility of this being an attack from Mars, again, something that was not mentioned, it was hinted that they was from somewhere else (meaning outer space) but, no expansion upon this.

The voice of the martian machines though, oooooooh, spine chilling, not exactly Ullahhhh, but, good enough, another good inclusion - the red weed, oh, and the part about the humans being injested and kept in baskets, well done for including an important part of the story.

I was half expecting the Epilogue though, with people on the Moon seeing yet another flash towards earth, oh well, I never expected them to make a sequel anyway.

I saw the film this afternoon and thought it was very poor. The special effects did not look particularly special and the plot and story line were plodding and cliche ridden rather than imaginative. I think many people will come out of the cinema thinking that they have seen bits of it before somewhere - for example in Independence Day or in The Day After Tomorrow etc. It lacks the sharp edge of the original film and certainly of the book.

I'm quite shocked at that.

I thought the special effects were by far the best ever seen. They were realistic and not cgi'd to death. The plot was pretty rivetting.

it followed the original pretty well.

Its one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. It is totally gruesome at some stages without being gorey.

it was an excellent film, I was looking forward to it as I was a big fan of the 1950's film

very clever foil following just one family
a few minor gripes
ie the car could navigate the motorway and a crashed airliner without too much difficulty

i am not a fan of cruise but he was very good, and loved the in joke at the end with gene barry ( the hero in the original) turning up at the end as grandpa!!!!

go see it

saw it late last night & its only just above average.
fx brill, long snakey thing & tripods very good & similar to my memories of the first version.could have explained the reason they died a little better.
however i do feel the mind set of the yanks is such that it's not pc to mention aliens or dying from flu just in case someone gets upset or worried.
looking froward to Fantastic 4 - just for "clobbering time" .

Good effects, poor effort by the humans overall - Cruise is wooden and the chap in the bunker (forgot his name) is poor.

Thats probably why so many people are dissapointed with it, and why I'm not going to see it at the cinema, I'm not paying £5 to see a kids film.

It's a shame they don't make films for grown-ups anymore, everything has to be made to the lowest denominator, to get the maximum return.

You've obviously not read the novel etc.

I saw it in Norway last week and was great despite annoying subtitles. I usually hate Spielberg, but really liked this one. There were a lot of bits that seemed like they'd been pinched from other films tho - Independence Day (although that pinches from original War of the Worlds of course), Signs (same story to an extent) and there's a scene that REALLY reminded me of a bit in The Abyss.

Anyhoo...it's good...see it...I actually even enjoyed it more than Batman, which I never thought I'd be able to say.

This was a fantastic movie Nick2. At least go and see it, then judge! Not like any kids film I've ever seen. (How did it get that rating?)

The movie really dealt with all the trauma and fear of an overwhelming attack.

There were 9/11 references all over the place: After the intial attack, looking into the mirror and realising the dust all over him were burnt remains.
The pitures of lost ones posted up all over the place.
The bodies floating by.
Just death on a huge scale.

And I really felt the fear... Can't remember the last time I sat literally on the dege of my seat all the way through a film.

Very, very good.

Just watched it tonight.. not bad I thought.

The first 10-20 dragged a bit for me and I though the kids were really cack all the way through the film especially that weird young lass.. how weird is she??

The special FX were brilliant and I enjoyed the first half but the 2nd half seemed to drag and got a little boring for me.

The train rushing by was a good touch I thought also.

Not bad 7/10

I want to see a proper remake of the book though, including the thunderchild and proper dialogue at the beginning and if it would be ok.. the martians making ULAH!! That would be good for me.

Also just been to watch and really enjoyed it. I like how the film focused on pure survival.

However again like a few, i felt the end was a bit of an anti-climax. Although i understood it, i felt adding another 15 to 20 mins on somone discovering the weakness of the aliens and watching us fight back would have made it a 9 out of 10 rather than a 7.5.

War of the Worlds has to be the most dissapointing film in a long time.

Didnt see enough of the tripod aliens and the scene in the house with the three of them, went on too long. Tom Cruise was a let down. I was sick of that little girl screaming.

The orginial was alot better.

OK a few points:

Great first build-up, but as soon as the kids start kicking off and screaming you just wished they would get killed off as they were so annoying.

Great special effects but WAY too much family good dad/bad dad dialogue and not enough ACTION!! Aliens and their fighting machines were way underused.

The aliens look like a complete rip-off of the aliens in Independance Day

Why couldn't we see Tim Robbins character get killed? This was prime for some raw emotion shots!

The ending was SO cheesy it ruined the film. Reminded me of a Wurthers Original advert with the nice family all back together totally unscathed.

Anyone agree or am I being over critical?

Yes, the aliens become addicted to Mc Donalds, eventually they don't fit in their war machines any more and have to trundle round in WalMart electric wheelchairs, they become obese and die of heart attacks and constipation.

The End

(Actually, thats a better ending than the one Spielberg did, but I'm not sure if the constipation scene would get the rating bumped up to a 15)

Well, at least you have been to see it now Nick2, and can comment fairly.

I guess it takes different things to rock people's boats. I haven't enjoyed the cinema so much in ages.

I am someone who goes to see a film willing it to be good. I really love the experience of being properly terrified or awe struck, or amused. It doesn't happen very often nowadays either because the movie is crap and formulaic, or because I'm getting older. (Don't know which, but I'm not alone in being dissapointed by recent films such as Star Wars).

War Of the Worlds delivered big time for me!

Yep, that's some scarey fluff alright.

But seriously, this is the most mind numbingly boring film I've seen in a long time. I went to the toilet half way through and never came back. There's no entertaining or insightful dialogue, and no real action to speak of. The plot never really happens - I think it's supposed to be building the tension but that doesn't materialise either.

And I don't think I had any preconceptions because I've never read the book and haven't seen the original film since I was about 6.

I'm a hufe fan of the book and the musical so I've been waiting for years for this to be made into a modern film. I would have loved it to have been set in England in the right time but still, I thought this movie was awesome. Just what I expected. The original story is simple and so was the film. Death and distruction out of control.

The book ends almost as simple as the film but yes, could have done without the happy family reunion.
