View Full Version : How to get to Cambridge?
noseyrosie 23-06-2005, 18:16 Hi all I need to get to and from Cambridge 28th-31st July. Does anyone know the best way to get there? i don't drive and coaches have an hours wait in Milton Keynes so take forever, and all trains require 3 changes and are hideously overpriced compared to most routes, even with my railcard!!!
Anyone got any tips? Please help!!!
banesmabes 23-06-2005, 18:32 I lived in Cambridge for 3 years until last summer and regularly travelled back to Sheffield. I don't drive either so I relied on the train. It is a pain to have to change so much and I never really got used to it.
I usually found that the best bet was to get the train from Sheffield to Ely (I think it ends up in Norwich) and then change at Ely for Cambridge. It takes longer than going via Doncaster and Peterborough, but less can go wrong because you are only changing once. Plus trains between Ely and Cambridge are much more frequent than between Peterborough and Cambridge.
Another thing I used to do to make it better was to get someone to give me a lift to Doncaster, then there's only one change that way as well, and it is much quicker than the above route.

And it takes almost 6 hours!!!! God....I'll check out the Ely option - I went from Norwich to Shef on that route recently....takes a while in itself though.

Not bad for a fiver an hour.
noseyrosie 23-06-2005, 19:23 Via Leicester looks like a good option.
banesmabes 23-06-2005, 20:24 Train used to cost me £29 with a railcard and would take 3 - 4 hours. Has the price gone up?
I did do the Leicester route once and that wasn't too bad. However trains from Leicester to Cambridge are not that frequent, so if something goes wrong then you might end up being stuck in Leicester for a couple of hours.
