Hello everyone Jaytee here again and i was just wondering if anybody plays any pc games or console games. Just wanted to know which are your favourite games. Also if anyone plays on-line, what games do you play. Perhaps we could all meet up in a game and have a good giggle.Anyway just let us know.

I play Aces High (www.hitechcreations.com) a *lot*.

Takes about 2-3 months before you can actually control your aircraft with any sense of confidence. It has about 100-400 players online at any time, and the whole thing is a WWII combat flight simulator with a frighteningly detailed and realistic flight model (many players are real pilots, and they say the flight model is the pick of the bunch).

I am also in 332 viking Squadron (www.332viking.no) and we fly Squad Night most Tuesdays at about 8:30pm. Flying in a squad multiplies the enjoyment. There's nothing like zooming in with a FW 190D onto the tail of some hapless Spitfire whilst your comrades blow up the fighter hangars and destroy the radar.

If you like dogfighting and realistic flightsims this is for you. The graphics are a little long in the tooth, but htis makes for smooth framerates and more concentration on the all important flight model.

There are also Ack Ack guns, Tanks, APCs, Transport PLanes, Heavy Bombers FlakPanzers, Cruisers and Aircraft Carriers that are yours to command.

Also played eve-online - a gigantic galactic space game, massively multiplayer, but it is so open ended it's too muchlike real life, i.e. you spend most of your time earning money, and the combat/skills development system is for RPG heads who like throwing dice and counting hitpoints - not my bag at all.

Check out POGO.com I love the word games: Bookworm, Tumble Bees. Plus Poppit and Mahjong.
You can also play casino games like Poker and even Roulette. Hubby likes playing Pool with other on-line players plus a cool Tank game for you guys.
Let me know if anyone wants to play Scrabble. I play that with on-line players at MSN's web site.

Well the games i play on-line are, Battlefield 1942, its such an amazing game and if you got a microphone you can talk to each other through the likes of MSN and Yahoo which also adds to the excitement as you and your mates fly or drive a tank toghther.Just palyed and completed'Call of Duty' great game but very short. I have also just bought 'Fifa 2004' for the pc and its great. You can play on-line and take on your mates or play against anyone in the world. Great Fun.

I don't get much time to play games as a rule but my son recently got Matt Hayes fishing so i have had a whirl on that.
I can't catch em on that either but at least the baits free and don't need a licence.

I haven't played online for ages but then I'm out in the boonies at the moment...

Day of Defeat was my favourite though and I tried Aces High although the lack of depth perception (for range) was a tad frustrating... I'll probably get back into it when I move and get back onto Cable broadband again :)

Apparantly, Call of Duty is meant to be really good online.

I used to play Deltaforce2 and Crimson Skies online, but haven't bothered much these past few months.

I was also a beta tester for Eve - a fantastic space trading multiplayer game.

Has anyone got GTA3 to work multiplayer?

Mike

I didn't think there was an official GTA multiplayer?

Vice City MP would be the business.

No, it's not official. You have to download and install some patches from a fan site and then register to use a game server that somebody has set up.

The setup looked very long winded the last time I looked at it, I was curious if anyone had figured it out.

Hi Jaytree,

Settlers of Catan ... is actually a board game (nothing to do with the excellent Settlers computer game series).

Forum online gaming idea sounds cool too :o)

We could get a Sheff Forum Aces High Squadron together and patrol the skies in our spitfires, talking using built in vox and stuff.

Not sure how many propellor heads/ combat flightsim enthusiasts we have here however.

If I can find my analog joystick anywhere then I think I'll give it a go - can't for the life of me remember where it is though...

I have an Idle Thrustmaster Afterburner Pro Throttle and Stick with Rudder Paddles on throttle.

If anyone would like to fly aces high then you will need an analogue (pref USB) stick.

You will also need a microphone (I recommend a headset)

You may download a Free Trial (14 days use) of Aces High from here (http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/AH1114.EXE) (35MB)

Interestingly after the 14 days is over, you can still us the game for LAN and Head to Head play for free in perpetuity.

After 14 days it is $15 a month thereafter.

PM me with good times to meet in the air, and I can take you through the basics as 14 days is hardly enough time to get trained, let alone get any good.

You have to be prepared to be shot down a lot to begin with.

$15/month is scandalous

I love the Balder's Gate series - top games, but never played them online - I could never get it to work. Might try and give it a go again at some point though. It's a shame they didn't continue the series, or let you port your BG character into Neverwinter Nights.

The only other thing I've played online is Risk - that used to be pretty cool. There's a few websites which offer free java-based Risk, where you just create your own game and wait for people to join, or just join another game.

Might give that Aces High a go though - looks like it could be a laugh. I've not got a joystick though, so it'll be mouse and keyboard for me!

it's about 30p a day.

Which is pretty good value for the enjoyment provided.

Of course, it depends on how much enjoyment you get out of it.

For me 30p a day is a small price to pay for:

Sweeping down from 20k in my FW-190 D9 and lining up a Spit Mk XIV, opening fire at 250 yards and scattering him across the landscape (yesssssssssss)

Leading a flight of 12 lancaster bombers deep into enemy territory with p51s as escort - dropping a combined bombload of 12x14,000lbs dead on the enemy headquarters, flying home and landing sucessfully

Shooting into the sky in a rocket powered Me163 to intercept incoming hi altitude enemy bombers with the irresistable force of my twin 30mm cannons

Parking my Tiger tank on the runway of an enemy field and blasting away at their fuel, ordnance, radar and any idiot who happens to try and take off.

Obliterating enemy towns using the 10 inch guns on my battlecruiser

Dive bombing industrial installations in my Ju-87 Stuka and its magnificent 4000lb bomb.

ymmv

I won't deny it's great fun but $15/month is hardly in line with other games is it. Usually you pay once for a game, patch it a million times as it was really a beta when released and then play on public servers for free. Lets hope others don't take this path or you'll need a mortgage if you want to play a variety of games!

I'd love to get into online gaming, but I would be too crap on a dial-up connection.

A majority of games are fine with a dial-up connection, since the game itself is run on your PC, and there's not much data being transfered. I've never really suffered from lag with my 56k connecion at home. :)

25-11-2003, 15:05
When I had a 56k modem some years ago I was forever getting disced. I was connecting to servers in US East and West and the other players used to get annoyed with the lag. I could never go back to a 56k.

heh, true for online games but AFAIK multiplayer involves less than 50 players. these MMOGs with upwards of 400 (2000 in the case of eve) players online require spohisticated back end solutions, rather than relatively simple peer to peer hookup lobbies.

Anyway, all that may be tru, however

a) if you like it, you will hardly play any other games!

b)This is one of the cheapest - others cost upwards of $20 a month

c)mmogs have ongoing costs of hosting games and maintaining servers that must be met. Either you do this with ballooning, one off sales figures in which case you get a game that is permanently swamped with players or you adopt a subscription model, and rely on the people that really like your game sticking with it.

d)by paying a subscription, you get a constantly evolving game, with player led improvements and developments. Of all the online businesses, the people at HTC really listen to what people say - and their customer service is second to none. It's a small, and I would imagine, very rich company, but what they do, they do very, very well.

There isn't a flight model, including x-plane, that approaches it in the arena of PC flight sims. This is why it is the combat flightsim of choice for real pilots.

Also with Aces High, you can play 8 player battles in your own arenas on their servers, for free, for the forseeable future. Also lan play is free. Most other MMOGs demand you pay for the shwrinkwrapped box and then a monthly subscription.

For the record Aces High works fine with 56k modem, although AHVOICE (the in-game speech radio system) may impact your performance considerably. Many, many players use 56k modems to play, ISDN too.

The thing to do, I think, for anyone that is really interested in Air Combat, would be to go down to the Frag Cafe in Sheff and ask them to load it onto their boxes for Lan Play. That way everyone who wanted to could dogfight on the lan (pay by the hour though)

I used to play a lot of Doom 2 online on my PC... Nowadays I restrict my online gaming to my Xbox, even though I have broadband...

I just can't be arsed with all the messing about that PC based online gaming entails, setting up stuff like Gamespy etc.

For the past few years I've played Americas Army www.americasarmy.com

Written by the US Millitary as a recruitment tool, I find it the most realistic and action packed FPS I have yet encounted. With constant updates, a strong community and hours and hours of fun.

They are constantly bringing out new weapons, roles and maps which make the games life last a lot longer. Training is required to act as the desired role. At the end of your training you take an exam if you don't pass you stay a grunt.

Best thing since sliced bread mefinks :)

Iv been hooked on Quake for eons.
Lately (since about 2004.....i think :D ) iv been playing only Quake III Arena online, especially FreezRail mode of it. All ot of my firends play Unreal but it seems abit too messy to me compared to Quake.
