View Full Version : Memories of Childhood Medicines/tablets.
slimsid2000 23-06-2005, 15:25 Just a bit of fun really.
Most kids get given some medicine or tablet that is for their own good but which they would rather not take.
What are your memories?
Any tablets, I couldn't take tablets at all, i just couldn't swallow them.
Joel
Can't really remember any medicines think we just felt ill and just let it take it's course it seems nowadays kids get took to Docs for slightest thing and always get told it's a bug going around go home and give them Calpol!
Do remember though having a sore throat and getting told to eat a Fab Icecream a day til it got better! Pity I didn't like Fab Icecreams. :(
My mum having to crush some huge white tablets between 2 spoons and then dissolve them in orange juice for me to swallow.
It never worked, always a gritty sludge left that I'd have to gag on anyway.
:gag:
In my childhood people had to pay for the DR's visit so had their own methods of medication
One of my Moms was Camphorated oil warmed on the yorkshire range, rubbed on the chest and then your vest stuck to it. (horrible)
Another was a spoonfull of Brimstone and treacle. Not sure what it was or what it cured. But I think they made matches out of brimstone.
And a spoonful of codliver oil in sugar.
We didn't have much wronng so must have been successful

I remember the stuff that tasted like strawberry milkshake, you got a tablespoon full at a time, I dont' know what it was but it was luverly.
KookyKoo 23-06-2005, 16:20 I remember the year I got pneumonia, aged 8, it was Christmas day and I came down with it :( I was devastated, not least cos I was too ill to partake in the meal of the year!!!
Well my medicine made up for this in part, it was really cool, there were little pictures of cartoon bugs on the back of the box, and every time I took a dose I had to punch a bug out. By the time all the bugs were gone, I was better! Genius! Best medicine EVER!!!

Draggletail 23-06-2005, 17:00 A medicine called 'Fennings Fever Cure' - the foulest medicine ever made. It was bitter beyond belief and made your teeth stand on end:hihi:

I actually like cod liver oil.
My mum stored loads of it when I was born (she can't stand it) which I found , and drank over a 2-3 week period when I was about 3 or 4.
Can still taste it now:cool:!

I bet you can - literally :D
Only illness I ever had as a kid was tonsilitus, and every so often I used to get some really awful penecillin medicine uuurggghhhh
But, for anything else mum would give us a 'junior asprin' which was orange flavour, they were yummy.
Apparantly the inability to swallow tablets is an hereditary thing, my dad's the same as me - takes us both ages to get a tablet down. Remember being given a travel sickness tablet when i was young and promptly threw up! And mum picked out the tablet and tried to make me take it again :gag:
FairyNormal 23-06-2005, 20:54 Milk of magnesia for an upset tummy ........ Yeukkk!!!
That stuff was vile and like chalky milk. Absolutely disgusting.:gag:
Travel sickness pills, just before the long trip to cornwall i had to take them,i hated tablets (still not keen) remember my mum trying to tempt me with rasberry flavour pills ..awful:gag:
And coming back from hols was worse...mum used to hide a tablet in ice cream, that just put me off ice cream!!
Thing is when she did manage to get me to swallow the tablet i was still travel sick:(
I remember the strawberry flavoured stuff - was a pale pink colour and I think I had it when I had measles. Was it some sort of antibiotic? Dunno....made me feel sick. For years afterwards I loathed strawberries.
Hazel, Brimstone is the old name for Sulphur - I remember being given 'Sulphur Tablets' to 'clean my blood'. I used to get some really bad boils and the tablets were supposed to get rid of them.
Travel sickness - I used to be given a spoon ful of some VILE liquid that almost made me throw up. When tablets came along I was delighted.
Milk of Magnesia I was OK with, and Indian Brandee for upset tummies.

redrobbo 23-06-2005, 21:31 Mum used to give sister Sue and myself a daily dose of haliborange tablets when we were kids. They were delicious.
Calpol!!
I've still got a thing for the pink calpol that you give to small kids and babies... it just tastes so yummy.
And also I had a thing where I could not swallow tablets as well when I was a kid so if I needed any antibiotics or anything like that, me mam and dad used to crush them up and hide them in my food ie: In mash potato with loads of tomato ketchup on to cover the taste.
Still didnt work though, I have taste/smell senses like a bloodhound and saw through it straight away.

I still couldnt swallow them til age 18... *shamed face* :hihi:
There was a yellow varitiy of the pink yummy stuff, and the flavour you guessed it bananna :)
My sister once gave me cod liver oil one christmas when I was about eleven. I had been bunged up for two weeks and was starting to feel quite ill.
Not as ill as I felt after the tablespoon of cod liver oil, I couldn't run to the bathroom quick enough
