View Full Version : Broadband or Wireless or Desk
Conor_Boyd 18-11-2003, 15:45 Is there any Wireless access for the small towns around the edges of Sheffield? Particularily the Peak District. Im looking to buy around this area and I telecommute for a company. The only other option that I can see is getting some Deskspace with ADSL and commuting. Does anyone know how much this is likely to cost?
Conor_Boyd 25-11-2003, 17:12 Does anyone have a spare desk in their office with broadband internet connection that i might be able to rent?
How long for and for what purpose?
Sattelite Broadband is available in Derbyshire, I have a mate who lives in Matlock (No ADSL) and he has some gizmo on his dish that allows broadband access, not sure of provider, I will find out.
Satellite broadband is available just about anywhere, but unless you're prepared to pay big money, it's a hybrid service - you download from the satellite, but you still have to upload via a modem. Two-way satellite does exist but the last time I checked the prices where scary.
His is the same price as landline broadband access
Is it? Didn't know that - which isp is that with?
Sorry, just read you've said you don't know above....

i telecommute fulltime from home. so it would be starting from whenever i can get it and from 9-6 each day. the amount of thime that i would need it for would be at least 6 months.

sounds too good to be true. though an upload speed of 56k would kinda suck a bit :(
You can have a look at most of the satellite broadband packages on net4nowt (http://www.net4nowt.com).
Conor_Boyd 26-11-2003, 14:13 isdn
the problem is that they just cut you off after 200 hours of browsing at 128k. which is a bit rubbish really. im going to be working 8 hours a day and so about 160 hours in the month. that only means that there is just over one hour of connection time a day spare. i would not mind too much if i could pay for anything over the 200 hours but i have yet to find an isp that can offer this.
satellite
looks good on the face of it and there are packages that means that the traffic in both directions can go through the satellite thus eliminating the use of the modem for upload but the setup cost of 1000£ is nasty. you think they would be cutting it as apparently in 2005 99.9% of the uk is going to be able to get broadband.
-> the only thing that i can think of is to get the satellite and try to offset the cost of it with providing some wireless access to the surrounding area. though i dont know the legal implications of this.
I'm sure you're aware, but BT recently released updated trigger levels for many more exchanges - have you checked availability for you exchange very recently?
ISDN is very expensive for what you get.
Liberty may also be of interest if you can recruit 200 people:
http://www.libertybroadband.co.uk/wireless/
"Firstnet is currently recruiting local 'broadband champions' to co-ordinate campaigns in those areas that are desperate for broadband Internet access. If 200 customers within a 15km radius commit to subscribing to a Firstnet tariff then we will roll out its wireless network to your area. "
I know a place that does rent-a-desk (and fast broadband) for around £170 per month, but at that price you might as well go for ISDN hadn't you?
Did you try these guys for ISDN?

whats the name of that place? is there a website for it also? im seriously thinking of it. isdn is going to be about half the speed that i need.
