View Full Version : Bistrot Pierre near Somerfield, Ecclesall Road - have you been?
I've been told that one of the new builds in front of Somerfield on Ecclesall Road has opened as a resturant. Can anyone tell me its name/telephone number and, if they've been, what they thought?
Thanks in advance.
brianthedog 18-02-2009, 12:31 I want to know about that place. Looks very nice from the outside. May have to give it a whirl this weekend...
Alastair 18-02-2009, 12:40 It's part of a chain, don't expect anything special.
Bistrot Pierre; a small chain
brianthedog 18-02-2009, 13:47 My 1000th post - wo hoo!
Thanks for the name mdawes. Just found their website... http://www.lebistrotpierre.co.uk/
It is a chain, although only a small one. No reason why a chain can't be something special - look at Gordon Ramsay's places in London. I'll be giving it a try - some interesting menus on their website. Will post on here once I've tried it...
Alastair 18-02-2009, 13:47 That's a novel way to spell bistro.
The Idler 18-02-2009, 13:52 The bottom is open as a bar too, so you can just call in for a drink - (Then pop down to a cheaper restaurant on Sharrow Vale Road to eat!)
brianthedog 18-02-2009, 13:53 That's a novel way to spell bistro.
Not really... http://www.reference.com/search?q=Bistrot
My friends called in on Sunday, they just wanted a drink but the staff were very offhand and they felt "interogated" because they didnt want a meal so they walked out. The place was empty too
booked a table for thursday - will let you know what its like !
fifikeeling 19-02-2009, 07:27 Well i went in for drinks on Tuesday night and it was very busy, no off hand staff very welcoming indeed, must of been around 30 people eating and about 12 in bar area. Cant wait till pay day to go and try it, smelt beautiful and after talking to some1 it appears the food is very good quality. Very reasonable prices and some offers also in the day.
chinaski 19-02-2009, 08:22 Prices do seem decent, especially at lunch. I was a little disappointed with the menu when I looked at it. You'd hope a place that sets itself up as a French bistro will look beyond the usual duck confit, beef bourgignon and so on . . . . stuff you can cook at home.
Anyhow, can't knock the place as I haven't tried it and it does look nice. The big tell for me is whether there mussels come vacuum packed like Café Rouge, or heaven forbid, they come in fresh and someone actually SCRUBS and COOKS them.
been tonight, table of 7
bar service was a little slow but not probs really.
Were shown to excellent table and and what followed was great food, nice wine and excellent company. The Fresh bread to start is really too good, we all could have eaten that and gone home with out main meals !
I had the special of belly pork which was top class, and the creme brulee was amazing. the food price was not bad and the wine was gd and not too bad price wise - but was pleased to find aussie red in a 'French ' place
All in all, as someone who will complain if I have to, I thnk we all had a splendid night. well done to all the team and hope this place goes well.
will def go back
brianthedog 24-02-2009, 09:34 I took my other half there a few nights back. I was very impressed with it - great food, and great service. I'll be going there again soon. £80 for 3 courses each and two bottles of a £20 red wine - so although not cheap it's certainly not hugely expensive.
gatoruby 24-02-2009, 20:51 Went and tried the early menu last week 2 courses £ 12.90 excellent! staff lovely all friendly and chatty even when they started to get busy around 8 definatly going again don't dismiss it just cos people say it's a chain they only have about 5 branches good atmosphere too
jamesogt 05-03-2009, 15:11 So here goes with my quick review! Just to give an insight to the customer lol I am early 30's, have worked at 3 1 Star Michelin restaurants, 1 2 Star and a AAA 5 Diamond, so I have spent a fair bit of time in restaurants.....
Arrived with no booking on Wednesday evening, table of 4 and a table of 2 already waiting in the bar area, were greeted by the bar man who offered us a drink and made enquiries as to whether we had a reservation or not. He then sorted the drinks and asked if we wanted them on the bill for dinner, we said that would be fine. Now the other waiting tables had been offered menus and olives while waiting, for some reason I wasn't, not the end of the world. It seems that the bar man also has to play host, making him quite busy with new bookings, reservations and drink making as well as letting people know their tables are ready upstairs. They will need a host I expect if they are to maintain service standards, being as busy as they seem.
The bar and restaurant are nicely decorated with a modern feel with a little 'French' thrown in with old signs and painted slogans.
We were told our table was ready but had to find our own way to the restaurant through what is actually signed as the toilets, they need a Restaurant this way sign on the same door!
We were seated by a window and the restaurant had probably the best part of 60 people dining, which for a Wednesday I woud consider busy in Sheffield. The waitress was foreign, maybe French, not too sure as she didn't talk too much, but was perfectly efficient. She showed us where the special board was and took further drinks orders. The manager brought the menus and also explained about the 3 course menu with wine. The waitress returned and offered us bread and olives and took the order.
Our order was as follows,
Brioche et champignons Brioche toasted & served with creamy wild mushrooms & Alsace bacon £4.95
Not bad, flavors good, but slightly dissapointed with it being only button mushrooms, could have had a few Chanterelle or Shiitake. Also the Brioche was slightly more bread like than toasted, maybe due to the sauce making it soggy.
Filet de mulet rouge Pan-fried fillet of red mullet with ratatouille, olive oil & lemon £4.95
Nice sized piece of fish with good flavor and nice vibrant colured ratatouille. (Not mine)
Filet de porc Pork fillet with grain-mustard sauce, caramelized apples & Stornoway black pudding £10.95
Excellent, tender pork with lovely topping of black pudding, sauce not over powered by the mustard, with sweet apples off setting the black pudding and sauce.
Suprême de poulet Marinated chicken suprême with field mushroom & caramelized red wine shallot sauce £11.50
Also very good (Not mine) but enjoyed thouroughly by my friend.
Also the mains are served with 'family style' vegetables and potatoes of the day, in this case being red cabbage, broccoli and dauphinoise potato, all also very good. (No extra charge) Though other chargable sides are available.
Sticky Toffee Pudding £4.50
Large portion of dessert served with a small side of ice cream, sauce thick and the sponge very light, delicious.
Chocolate Mousse Special £4.50
Average, not bad, but have had better.
So all in all I would definitely return, probably a few minor points to be ironed out but in general the menu is right up my street, with friendly efficient service and food that rated 8/10, I think it is well worth the £50 for 2 including drinks and tip.

Yum, that Brioche sounds delicious. Might try there one day, do they have a dress code at all?
Rocklegend 05-03-2009, 16:43 Went Tues lunch;will definitely be back, inexpensive and good service. No dress code-especially when the waiter was in jeans...

Unless I picked a bad time to visit I would dispute the positive comments.
We went for the early bird menu (just before it finished) and the starters were luke warm. I had the brioch and thought it was quite bland. We both then had the worst looking salmon we've ever seen. All goodness had been cooked out of it (the method of cooking was not clear) and the sauce that sounded so nice on the menu looked watery with an ugly oil slick in it. (If you watch kitchen nightmares it was a bit like the guy in Devon who bought lamb shanks that were vacuum packed and lasted a year in the box ready to be brought to life with a zap in a microwave.)
We left and thought that it would die on it's knees if everyone had the experience we had just had. It's on my doorstep and I'll certainly not be rushing back.

How very odd. First post, and expressing an opinion which flies in the face of everyone else's experience. It's like those people who's first post is ranting and raving about a new restaurant. A vested interest, perhaps...? :suspect:
EccyBabe 06-03-2009, 19:28 Ha ha, protesting too much BTD? Just because you spent £80 on a meal for two? I'd say that's pretty bloody expensive for Eccy Rd?
Anyway, I went to LBPiere a couple of weeks after it opened and I'd say it was pretty bland. The waitresses were nice and friendly enough, nothing against them, but the menu says 'locally sourced food' - French... in Sheff? Hmmm... ours were just about edible but def microwave not fresh. Not cheap either, just average all round. Wouldn't go again.
jonblade76 08-03-2009, 09:33 :o
No vested interest. Just inspired to join the forum as it was the worst dining experience we've had that I can remember.
The beer was quite nice :D
The food wasn't :(

£80 expensive? Hardly. Especially when £40 of that is taken up by wine! Granted you can eat cheaper if you choose, but most the quality restaurants around there will cost £40 for two people to eat. And please, call it Ecclesall Road - I know the spelling confuses some people but make the effort, please.

No vested interest and the food and staff WHERE EXCELLENT when we went we also have friends eaten there since and where impressed defo on our visit again list. I wish peo[ple would say ECCLESALL too just hate this ECCY ROAD expression who started it anyway!!!!!!!!!!
numero uno 10-03-2009, 20:48 Four of us went mid week £85 for a starter platter and one other starter which we all shared we then had 4 mains and a couple of drinks each came to £85 which i thought ws reasonable for a decent restaurant my other half has already been back for lunch with her friends and all of them enjoyed it.
I like the windows allround, shame its not over looking a beach though.
I would say its above average on food, service and the price is very reasonable.
Would definately go back, just hope they can keep it up chefs get very restless and that can make or break a restaurant
brianthedog 11-03-2009, 07:26 I wish peo[ple would say ECCLESALL too just hate this ECCY ROAD expression who started it anyway!!!!!!!!!!
Too right. I refuse to understand any colleagues/friends when they say Eccy Road - I wait until they've said it properly. Besides the fact it's not called that, it sounds pretty juvenile when you have anyone over 10 abbreviating names in such a way.
Martin Amis 11-03-2009, 09:45 You sound like fun.
1st post - pse be gentle
Bistrot Pierre has certainly got the 'ambiance' right
Downstairs bar is very good and the Restaurant upstairs is very light and airy.In fact it seems to be a very well designed place.
Wine List is good - there are several reasonably priced House and others on the wine list.
Food prices are OK -Starters just under a fiver and Mains c £8 to £12 ish....although it isn't really French
Two of our group -I was one of the two - had the 'Specials' - the Ravioli stuffed with minced venison followed by the Fish Cakes.
DO NOT TOUCH EITHER WITH THE PROVERBIAL BARGEPOLE !
[They were truly appalling]
On a better note, the Egg Benedict was good, as was the Mullet followed by the Bream, the Steak and the Chips were very good, the lamb was OK and the service good.
Unfortunately, I won't be rushing back, but I do hope they do well.

Perhaps you could get your grammar and spelling in order before you start calling others. Also, is it not a tad hypocritical to use an abbreviation for definitely whilst calling those for using one for Ecclesall?

These people who are always ready to knock a new restaurant opening in Sheffield make my blood boil - always negative always complaining talk themselevs down a black hole !
EccyBabe 21-03-2009, 17:14 Wow what a feisty little forum this is, told off on three accounts on my first post...
You are right, I don't drink wine so would never expect to add £40 to my bill for it, so £80 including wine is great value and much better than those cheap and nasty other places, yes.
You are also right, knocking brand new restaurants in Sheffield is a shame and shame on me. I support all my local independent businesses, but personally I would more strongly support:
The Walnut Club - excellent food and at £5-10-5 excellent value too.
For cheap and cheerful, La Terrazza, great atmosphere and good quality basic Italian food at v reasonable prices.
And for great food in the day time you can't beat Abuelo which is good value, great surroundings (except the dodgy fake exterior) and lovely fresh healthy food.
But I also don't support Nonnas - not as good as it thinks it is, Mish Mash - overpriced, and the pasta bar(?) (Sharrow Vale Rd) - the food was stale...twice.:o
My opinon, but you can go where YOU like.
Ps - Born and bred and living on ECCY ROAD, proud of ECCY RD, and too lazy to type ECCKLESHALL, theree's faar too maany lettters in itttt..... x:hihi:
jonblade76 21-03-2009, 18:02 Chill Winston. Let your blood simmer down a bit. I'm not a troll who comes on to wind people up. Far from it. I'm quite easily pleased really. . . . just not by restaurants that microwave food.
jonblade76 21-03-2009, 18:06 I'm with you Eccybabe. Walnut club use local ingredients and cook them well for a good price. Abuelo burritos are great for a little beer snack - although the beers not cheap. Pasta bar was a shocker when I went, and friends too have been negative - shame as it's a great potential to cook lots of nice fresh pasta dishes.
Ottos is supposed to be good. Maybe we could go sometime ;-)

Couldn't agree more. It's nothing more than a studentism - claiming familiarity with a place they've got little to do with other than wearing floppy hats and shouting 'whoo'. cf The 'Porter's' cottage.

Sorry - couldn't resist!
Or should it be Eccy Rd?
And now we onto attacking the students who keep the City afloat with cash !
Back onto the thread. I have eaten there twice and and a pleasant evening both times. Is it the best food I ever had - no, but good all the same, good wine, great decor, nice staff - perhaps its the people I go with but we do go out with the intention of having a good time. Hope they listen to the constructive criticisms on here, especially about the bar service - but if you have not been, give it a try !

Go on shout 'whoo'. You know you want to.
GreyStarling 24-03-2009, 09:30 Oh it's ok in a mediocre sort of way. Efficient service, decent starters and reasonable prices were countered by bland bread, rubbish wine, and yes, a petit suggestion of the microwave.Instead get yourselves over to Zeugma or Wasabisabi on London Road (or Lonny Road as those pesky students will soon start saying).
Go on shout 'whoo'. You know you want to.
Whooooooo!!
ha ha!
We went on Friday - bar is excellent the kind of place you wished did proper tapas as I could of happily spent a few hours nibbling on food whilst supping beer.
Nothing we had shouted microwave but then fresh bass, lamb cooked pink, calamari and a salad couldn't really! Chips looked diabolical mind you! And I would argue that if you have a side orders of red cabbage and dauphinoise that these shouldn't form part of the standard accompanying veg! Not sure if this is pointed out if you order them but... Would also say that the veg needs re-working so that it sits happily with all on the menu.
theripsaw 30-03-2009, 11:32 Went for a midweek lunch. I thought it was reasonably priced decent food in nice surroundings. I'd go back.
Hi all!
I like it! I've been a few times now as I live nearby and I haven't had any problems with it (and I like good food!). The staff are always friendly and don't make you feel rushed and their early bird is amazing value!
The only slight negative was that the last time we went we sat in the window at the back and it was a bit strange looking at Somerfield while we ate!
Abbie x
Ousetunes 31-03-2009, 12:22 The wife and I went yesterday and I was very impressed.
I like the feel of the place, the food was excellent and the price very reasonable. Our only complaint was that we felt a bit rushed (as soon as the first course's plates were removed our main courses arrived). We told them about this and they apologised (and it certainly appeared that our waitress was getting a talking to as we left the restaurant).
We paid £60 including 15% tip and this included a bottle of wine and an espresso. The restaurant was packed as we made our way to the very quiet bar downstairs. Again, I like the feel of the bar and as it was my wife's birthday we opted for a bottle of Champers at £59 which was okay.
All in all an enjoyable experience and yes, we'll be back.
65scratch 04-09-2009, 10:09 I was thinking of going tonight, early doors - any more recent experiences to report? I've looked at their website, a bit puzzled as to how they can have the same menu across so many widely dispersed restaurants & still claim to be sourcing locally? And I notice seasonal asparagus - in September? Local? I hardly think so. Puts me off a bit!
jamesogt 04-09-2009, 11:40 I was thinking of going tonight, early doors - any more recent experiences to report? Well as far as I know though the menu is designed and implemented by an Executive Development Chef that is based at head office but travels to each restaurant weekly, they source through local suppliers for the ingredients, e.g. Leicester uses local suppliers, Sheffield etc, they dont all get all their stock from the same people. Apart from the Chicken (comes from France) and Beef (Pasture fed Scottish).
As for the Asparagus the menu is due to change to its Autumn menu shortly, so I would assume it is changing or it clearly must be imported as the season ended late July.
I can't actually see where on the menu it says sourced locally? Can you link me to the page you saw it? All I can see is this-
We try and source our produce responsibly. We buy the finest, fully traceable, 21 day-aged beef from Scottish pastures. Our fresh chickens and eggs are free-range! All of our pork is outdoor reared and RSPCA Freedom Food approved.
Le Bistrot Pierre are informal, friendly and lively bistros. Our ethos is: “Great value, delicious cooking in a busy, buzzy atmosphere from a friendly and professional team enjoying themselves”
For anyone wanting to see the menu's in full they are here.....
http://www.lebistrotpierre.co.uk/contentpage.aspx?tabId=14&type=menus
(PS, Before the forumfoodies claim I am biased or know too much, I do now work there! As a barman, so don't know everything about the kitchen before you ask!)
65scratch 04-09-2009, 12:39 Thanks jamesogt. I thought I'd seen a previous poster referring to locally sourced - my apols if it doesn't apply. And since my previous post I've been to my local shops & seen what is claimed to be English asparagus on sale - so looks like I may have been too quick off the mark there as well. Still, I prefer my asparagus 'in season' which to me means May/June.

In which case you should give it a go, then you can report back for others interested, 2678687 is the number. I would suggest booking as it is generally very busy.
pete_jim 05-09-2009, 08:31 Three of us went for the 'early bird' menu the other week. It was very good value and we would definitely go again. Thought the large glass of wine was a bit steep though now I think about it, but would still go back, and buy a bottle this time!
Welshboyhere 05-09-2009, 17:09 There menus don't have any snails on! What kind of French restaurant doesn't serve snails???
DogTrx4Dumyz 09-09-2009, 14:45 Hello my bipedal friends.
My housepeople went a little while ago and I must recommend the doggy bag! Delicious steak but a bit frayed around the edges.
Woof!
Babooshka 09-09-2009, 19:33 Best restaurant in Sheffield in my opinion.
tessashark 11-09-2009, 12:06 I'd say it is a LONG way from being the best restaurant in Sheffield, but it is fine, on our visit we had the most rude service I think I've ever had from a waitress (so much so it was almost funny) but the food was perfectly ok if not anything to rave about.
Personally I didn't think much to the wine - we had a voucher for a free bottle of house Rose which was truly vile and felt that a good french restaurant should be able to serve good French wine at a reasonable price.
i've been on a saturday night a few weeks ago, it was ramjam full, but the noise from all the other tables was very loud as the tables are quite close together and it seemed to carry around the room. not the place to go for a romantic dining.
The food was OK, but we had to "fight" to get to the bar downstairs, past all the poseurs that were sat on stools sipping their halves of lager.
Went last Wednesday - party of seven - excellent
Since my first [disappointing] visit last year I'd not returned.
But...bouquets where they are due- very good value
I had the fixed price menu, which has a glass of wine included with each course, the rest went a la carte and the bill was £190 including quite a lot of pinot grigio excluding the tip.
Much improved.
bungleboy69 25-01-2010, 18:58 Food at this place is average to say the least. But the place is nice and the staff are very friendly. It seems a bit rushed for french food where in france you can take ages to eat your meal if you want. Fixed price is best vfm
zombielover 25-01-2010, 19:47 I've been three times & enjoyed it each time.
The fresh bread at the start is fantastic, also they do honeyed chorizo as an appetizer, which is really nice.
I've had the steak a couple of times & it's a nice tasty cut of beef & both times cooked perfectly. I've always found the staff to be spot on too.. Not too pricey & the earlybird menu is a real winner!
8/10
I go very often and LOVE this place. good menu although I wish they would change it more often... but its lush...
Gormenghast 25-01-2010, 21:08 I've been twice, and had the fish main both times. In my opinion it was really good value for money.
