It was fine yesterday, I switch it on today, get the its bust start up in safe mode etc, which I do. Windows starts to boot the pfft.. BSOD

ALL my uni work is on the flippin machine. Can I do anything from the F10/F2?? prompt where the settings are?

Thankfully I have my pda but its no good for assignments!

get it up in safe mode and then go to system tools in the start menu and choose system restore , another box will pop up and then select the date to turn the pc back to. So the pc in effect travels back through time before it got broken.

try that.

if however safe mode trick a no go, press F8 when PC boots to get safe mode screen up with the other option on and click LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION , this should work too.

the OP is suggesting you try the drive in a another machine to recover anything you want (just doing this on the sister-in-law's vaio laptop). It may be premature though - try googling on the error code that the BSOD tells you - that can sometimes give you a hint (though equally it's a lot of cryptic nonsense a lot of the time too).

Does it BSOD at precisely the same point each time? Or does it run a bit longer when you do a cold reboot compared with a hot reboot - if so query overheating? Failed fan perhaps?

Lots of things to check, narrow the possibilities down to start.

Hi I am unable to start in safe mode, previous settings mode anything really! On all the options it goes to the BSOD and then tries to reboot itself.

Unable to read any error message as the BSOD is only visible for a millisecond before it goes black for a reboot.

Me being me, i'd have a linux live cd hanging around, i'd boot up with that and backup any data I wanted to disk, then get on with my work elsewhere. At some point i'd either spend some time figuring the problem or save myself the headache and reinstall whilst watching my fav tv program.

Not that I really use windows but have you tried starting up with your recovery disk or windows disk (if they gave you one). They can solve numerous bootstrap problems...

but as you just said it don't get that far for safe mode etc... i'd have a strong feeling that the hard disk has become faulty or corrupt in some shape or form.

Bummer. The OP has suggested trying to boot with a live cd; that's probably worth a try. If nothing else a failure to boot with that is probably a fair indication that the hardward somewhere is at fault.

Even if some of the hardware has died, it's still more than likely you'll be able to retrieve what you have on your hard disk. HDD are pretty reliable these days. I don't often see failures now without some prior warning.
