View Full Version : Do we under-feed our cats?
Yesterday evening I left a block of cheese unattended (in its wrapper) for a couple of hours, and came back to find this... http://www.olliekitten.co.uk/cheese.jpg
Now that's a sizeable block, at least 4 inches. So I nipped out and bought some more. After eating some, I put it back in the wrapper it came in, then put tinfoil round that. And then forgot to put it in the fridge! Was greeted by this scene this morning: http://www.olliekitten.co.uk/cheese2.jpg (that's a 6-week old kitten, it's not a mammoth block of cheese! :))
Do all cats love cheese this much, or are ours insane??
mine love cheese - will eat a handful even after they have been fed.......
they also love Tandoori king prawns and stella....:loopy:
One of ours loves cheese, and anything meaty or fishy or dairy like and strangely kidney beans, spiders and butterflies. The other eats all the above (except kidney beans) plus Pringles, lettuce, ice cream, chips, rice, oranges, the odd bit of pasta and chocolate.
there's simply no hope for her!
My fella once left out a tub of marg, forgot the lid and when we came back there was an inch or so missing in the top layer with strange streaky tongue marks all over it and one happy cat in her bad looking very pleased with herself.

Our cat used to adore cheese - but beware! It gave rise to some real eye-watering farts  :gag: . Given the size of your feline horde, and the hot weather...I hope none of them have such sensitive bowels ;) :hihi:
zombiekillah 23-06-2005, 12:43 my cats strange , she wont eat any treats i try and give her except cat food
I think i under feed ours, he's like slim Jim.
Look at him HERE (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/viking99/forums/fatcat1.jpg)
Mine decided to help himself to the cheese and bisciuts at a party we threw a few months back...after one lick of the cheddar he decided that it wasn't for him and minced off out of the room.
Strange coincidence it may be, but everyone else decided that they didn't like the cheddar at that same moment as well...:gag:

The cheese was quite clearly off.
The other guests realised that if a cat won't touch it, it MUST be pretty far gone.
:)

We fed our cat eggs once. Big mistake.
Charlie ran away, never to return :(
I must have been 8 at the time.
Lickable 23-06-2005, 13:59 Our cats love cheese, chorizo and mushrooms. One of our cats will eat anything salad related as well as the usual cat food.

Funny, the cheese smelt far better than his usual slop...:D
Viking! :o Is that really your cat! OMG!
My cat will only eat cat food or tuna, she turns her nose up at almost any treats, she'll maybe eat the odd prawn of sliver of smoked salmon but that's about it.
I should have learned though when I offered her some mussels and she turned her nose up, I ate a few from the packet and was ill for a couple of days after that :(
Ours loves cheese, but its not a good idea to give ot to cats. The lactose in the milk gives them the squits, thats whay they make special lactose reduced cat milk for them.
Our cat also likes cheese, marg, crisps and is quite partial to any flavour mudshake. As far as cat food is concerned you can give him a certain flavour pouch one day and he wolfs it down but give him it again the next day and he turns his nose up and leaves it for the dog. Awkward little chuff.

Don't leave the port unattended! Imagine what a mess the mog would make of that!
From personal experience, I think most cats love cheese, and will do anything to get at it. Unfortunately, as will cow's milk, it isn't really good for them on a regular basis, but the occasional treat won't hurt.
I don't think you're underfeeding them ~ it's just your cat(s) making the most of an opportunity too good to miss.
:hihi:
joffandanmum 26-06-2005, 09:33 Cats like most things dairy,
have you ever found you have left the lid off the butter and theres a furry tongue mark on it,
thats when we in our house shout....
THE CATS LICKED THE BUTTEERRRRR...:suspect:
Yes to the butter thing - we actually had to change our brand of margarine as one of the cats became expert at prising the lid off the old ones! :) After buying three new tubs in less than a week we decided enough was enough, and taste took second place to practicality!
Thankfully that's not really so much of a problem now Oscar (the main culprit) has grown up and we've trained him off the kitchen surfaces, but they can't resist the challenge of a bit of cheese!
(Thanks to all who mentioned lactose intolerance, we were aware of that but unfortunately the cats weren't when they purloined the dairy products! ;))
Rich, if your cats are anything like ours, no matter whether they're hungry or not, if they see something different to the usual cat food, or something they're not supposed to eat, they'll eat it.
Smudge will eat literally anything, she has stolen pringles out of my mouth, loves noodles and has often stolen anything I wanted to eat.
However, we went to a restaurant for a relative's birthday meal and my grandma and my aunty grandma (cousin's grandma) couldn't eat all of their duck, so we packaged it up and took it back for my cats. Smudge would not touch it! She obviously knew she was allowed it... she would cut off her nose to spite her face!
