View Full Version : No sound from dvds on media players.
Tried to play a couple of films on my windows media player but got no sound even though it played the films O.K.It has only just started doing this.I have checked the volume control & all seems to be O.K.Even downloaded Realplayer to see if that would cure the problem, but no.Anyone got any ideas what could be the problem or have I got to try system restore to see if that will cure it?
Give us more info about what does and doesnt work:
I take it other sounds like music files play fine, is it just dvd's in the player that dont work, or do you have film files on your drive etc. Do cd's work in the drive through WMP?
How long ago did it last work, what have you done since it last worked?
Try to sort the problem before doing a restore, they can cause more problems.
Have you checked the mixer and turned everything up? are you getting normal windows sounds?
Yes all the other windows sounds are normal,It is just when I play a dvd film.I can play music from my cd.s.The dvd.s are O.K. because they play O.K. on my laptop.I am running X.P. on the P.C. that will not play the D.V.D.s but they play O.K. on my vista laptop.
OK, if CDs play from the drive, the drive is ok. If other sounds are ok then the sound card and mixer is ok.
While the DVD is playing in a window, double click on the speaker bottom right, go through all the playback options and check that none are muted and like xircon said, whack em all up to 75%.
If it's none of the above then its a setting in WMP. In WMP check tools / options, DVD tab, make sure all the settings look right. Also when you play the DVD make sure the disc settings are correct, those on screen menus at the start for sound setup, you might be trying to use optical out, or something crazy.
I'm all out of options after that, good luck...
I'm thinking a codec issue could be the cause.
Try downloading VLC Media Player for free from here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
No need to download codecs as they're all inside VLC, and it plays pretty much any format you can think of, including DVD files.

Thanks Mr.Gav did as you suggested & the videos are working great. Thanks also to everyone else for their help.
scottishdude 17-02-2009, 09:13 I had same problem on bedroom pc. I tried all that has been mentioned in this thread but no luck. I had an old Power DVD software disc, so I installed it and now I can play my DVD's with sound. Sometimes WMP is a pain, I play all my music files/cd's through Winamp.
Last weekend I was running DVDs through VLC on my Dad's pooter, and I was having similar audio problems, the sound worked, but was VERY quiet even though the sound was turned up full blast on the speakers and in the Windows sound control thingy, I checked it wasn't muted or anything, and it wasn't.
XP sucks, but Vista sucks more.
alchresearch 17-02-2009, 11:57 Windows Media Player also sucks. It's the wrong tool for the job.

I wasn't using WMP, I was using VLC.
I'll get my Brother to have a look at some point.

Sometimes if WMP or other media players have been recently used with low volume, sometimes I've found it affects the max volume in others.
Easy solution - Open other media player, turn up volume, close player.
Also check the pc/soundcard vol level
Another possible solution is to get the latest version of VLC, which gives you more options to boost and enhance sound quality.
Not sure otherwise, as the above has generally worked for me so far.

I know, I was referring to the OP. WMP doesn't even have the codecs to play DVDs.
Power DVD is the best paid for DVD player.
For free try AVS DVD Player or Media Player Classic or VLC.

..after installing some codecs? think he means it doesnt have codecs built in for playing dvd discs but it can play them once additional codecs have been installed
..after installing some codecs?
Probably (though I use WinDVD myself).
