View Full Version : Sheffield Wednesday v Barnsley (Match thread) 17/02/09
CorkerSWFC 16-02-2009, 10:57 After Saturday's disapointment, can we bounce back against the tykes?
I thought they looked a decent little side at Oakwell and have made improvments to the squad with the like's of Michael Misfud being brought in.
It should be an exciting game and a decent crowd aswell.
we cannot play has bad as we did on Saturday, we were shocking.
hurstyowl 16-02-2009, 11:59 one can hope we bounce back :hihi: with our home form and with our team we should be able to pick up the victory, but then again wednesday have a habbit of losing when they should win against these so called "lesser" teams as it is.
cant see us losing tomorrow ,our home form is pretty good.
Thingything 16-02-2009, 14:46 At home so nailed on home win
All Owls aint we
al_partridge 16-02-2009, 15:00 We've won all of our last 11 home games against Barnsley, so that's got to end sometime. Another couple of wins and the dingles won't even be able to count them with their extra fingers.
I'm not counting the 3-3 draw against them in the ZDS cup in the early 90s by the way, as we effectively got knocked out of that on purpose! I can still remember Sheridan laughing his head off as he ran back to the centre circle after hoofing the decisive penalty in the shoot-out high into the Kop!

Let's just say that as we had far bigger fish to fry, nobody exactly came away from Hillsborough gutted that we'd lost a game in a pointless competition.
It's not very different to Warnock putting his reserves out against Swansea and Colchester in the FA Cup and saying he wasn't too bothered that they were out of it.

1. if you were going you'd shout it from the rooftops as a loud proud owl
2. if your not going. then you'd keep it quiet as a shamefull pig.
so i reckon its tumber nooo.
Robbie Loving 16-02-2009, 19:31 Barnsley in theory should be an easy victory for the Owls, as they're not a very good team.
However the Owls' form is about as stable as the Blades.

im confident of getting a result at home -its our away form that is puzzling.
thanks for getting it back on topic Robbie- it gets boring waching those 2 sniping at each other
CorkerSWFC 16-02-2009, 20:24 I think its going to be a toughie tommorow derby's always are, Barnsley will be chomping at the bit tommorow to try and do the double over us so we have got to be on our guard 100% lad's.
Any1 going for a few bevvis tommorow if so where, might have a meet up for an hour and put a couple of faces to usernames if any1s up for it?
NERVY-OWL 16-02-2009, 20:54 derbys are always tough but we have a very good record at home against them, so i hope that isnt a bad sign

As a Barnsley fan (yer I know risking it coming on here) I think Wednesday will win. We have been playing badly recently and need to pull our socks up, unless of course all this time off we have had has helped, we shall see.
alex3659 17-02-2009, 12:38 So pigs is ok and adult then?
I like pigs, especially with apple sauce!
I didn't know you'd got a sensitive side? :)
very sensitive me. you may or may not have noticed but I don't very often use those terms , not sating I haven't but I like pet names like , creepy crawly [earwiggo] odd botty [sidebottom] ELI [THE MYTHOMANIAC MR BENN]
DUMB AND DUMBER, [me and bladebloke] .
pigs and slugs are so childish don't you ;)think?
hoping for a win tonight -Up The Owls

a couple seem to have dissapeared for no reason. robbie is on the prowl again. thats what we get for having a pleasant conversation all day.
Robbie Loving 17-02-2009, 13:54 GENTLEMAN
I know you all think I like coming on here and deleting posts.... but I'll let you into a little secret..... I DON'T.
I wish I could come on here one day and things would be in order. Will that happen? Well I'd rather bet on one of Corkers dodgy accumulators than bet on me coming on here to find it all in order.
If Blades have nothing positive to post in this section, may I request you don't post at all.
The next Blade who comes on this topic or any other Wednesday match day threads to wind up or abuse others will be looking at a forum holiday. I hope this doesn't have to be followed through.
thats why it happened Earwiggo.
anyway im confident anout tonight -seeing as its at home

It's not in doubt Benny Boy.
We'll win, it's by how many I'm not sure of.
Thinking 2-0, but as my predictions are nearly always one goal off, I have to re-assess as the day goes on.... 1-0 ??

Robbie Loving 17-02-2009, 14:09 I know Alex and the same does apply for thw Owls.... but if we look at the Blades matchday thread.... well we can't accuse the Owls of being guilty of a wind up can we?

Anyways, this is my last word on the subject.....

no problem Robbie, clearly some wednesday fans can't take what they dish out. perhaps we should all press the report button evertime we are called names or insulted. NAH better to reply on open forum .If you don't lie you have nothing to hide.

only need the draw thingy read what was said .
"yes" means wednesday will win.
"no" means they will not win.
that was clarified right at the start.
basically you have a tenner on wednesday to win at home tonight at evens which is far better than the bookies price.

odds for an owls win....for 2 reasons...the chance of us losing is slim which ever team we play at home. and we normally win,loose,draw,loose,win...very unpredictable

alex3659 17-02-2009, 15:21 nowt like a confident man.
Because my disabled partner is bed bound at present i will not be able to go tonight , so will have to listen on radio. but ,some things are more important than football and having a partner who has had 2 serious strokes makes tonights game less important. -just thought id post this -so it saves some blades on here sniping at me .
anyway im confident of a positive result tonight

One of 'ems a mosquito! :o
Don't like playing against debutants, they have a habit of trying! :(
Wednesday waiting for Beevers to pass a fitness test as we speak, 6-30 pm.
If Hinds is fit, he could come in, or BL might just stick Watson in there as half suggested by a Wednesday poster on another thread.
The Dingles on RS sound pretty confident. I think they could be a bit match rusty..... or will they be fresh as daisies?
There last game was in 1892! :hihi:
Watson is definatly out injured

To be fair, you'd have to go on a pretty horrific run to get relegated from that position, there are so many average teams in this division, it's hard to see too many of the teams below you managing more than another 10 points!
It's not good though losing to a poor team for the first derby double defeat in donkey's years though is it! :)
With the way these freak results are happening lately, it might be worth putting 50 on United winning the cup... or even go mad and put on the whole £1 :)
hope we improve for saturday as W*****k will be looking forward to his visit
alex3659 17-02-2009, 22:32 got a one weeks induction course. then i can start banning pigs
Did it come recorded delivery?.
NERVY-OWL 17-02-2009, 22:33 your probably right but i dont think 42 points is enough, although i cant see us losing every game till the end of the season. i only heard after the match it was that long that they had done it, well done to them. rice goal was a nice finish but how they let him get so much room i dont know.
alex3659 17-02-2009, 22:35 good win for barnsley they would have been in bottom three if the had lost.
nine teams below wednesday have got games in hand on them .

Could've said exactly the same for Tudgay's goal...!
NERVY-OWL 17-02-2009, 22:54 Could've said exactly the same for Tudgay's goal...!
well, tudgay picked it up in our half and just ran at you. rice picked up a long pass i think it was and he wasnt far away from pen area, no wednesday player near, surely they knew he is their most dangerous player
hurstyowl 17-02-2009, 22:57 good win for barnsley they would have been in bottom three if the had lost.

yeah because they are all going to win arent they :loopy: their games in hand will be against wolves, you lot, reading etc. we will finish well away from relegation
fred_notdead 17-02-2009, 22:59 So that'll be another home and away double then!

Well what a load of rubbish we were tonight. Could have walked out after 60mins. Clarke shouldnt have been on the pitch to start with he was diabolical. Gray had a bad night too, expected alot more than what we got from him-dissapointing. O'connor had a shocking game, was his fault Barnsley scored.
Really gutted about tonights game
NERVY-OWL 17-02-2009, 23:24 tonight was the first time i've left before the final whistle, clarke and o'conner were the 2 i'd pick as having the worst game. gray hasnt played many games for wolves so i'll let him off, cant be easy going from not playing to playing as many as he has. at least they cant play any worse next game, probably play better seems i cant go:mad:
Thingything 17-02-2009, 23:28 Had majority of the ball tonight but did bugger all with it
Clarke was a waste of space
Tuggers wasn't his usual
Worst game have seen from Gray and deserved to be subbed
Not one of our better nights
SpeedwayDan 18-02-2009, 00:27 Absolutely shocking performance from us tonight, we picked it up a bit more in the second half, but we still didn't create much.
It's annoying because Barnsley are poor, and to see our players looking like they'd never seen a football before in their lives makes you wonder what on earth is happening.

Totally agree
F. Sidebottom 18-02-2009, 08:34 All credit to Barnsley - they came and out fought us in the first half (a poor half). It says a lot about attitude when the away team can leave three up front when defending corners. In the second half they sat back and invited us to have a go.
Our midfield was very poor last night. I know JJ had a spell at the start of the second half, but first half I don't think he did anything of note.
In a way it reminded me of Wimbledon of old. They chased every ball in the first half and stopped us playing - and they crowded out the midfield. And I couldn't work out what formation they were playing. It's similar to what one of the Donny players said about Donny the other day - no one knows what to expect from them as they are a little unorthodox, and in the first half last night we looked a bit shell shocked - like we had no idea where their players were.
in the end though, the unorthodox one day gets found out, so they won't always be a suprise package.
And don't get me started on the diving from some of their players......
Overall though, we didn't deserve anything.
Paul2412 18-02-2009, 09:32 I was fairly puzzled at why we had a decent left footed player (Gray) down the right, and a natural right sided player (Johnson) down the left. It just didn't work at all for me.
We were terrible last night. We made Barnsley look a decent side.

shame on you. it was 1-0 not 6-0.
remember us losing to leeds 1-0 when the 4th official put up the board 4 minutes left. banged 2 in and everyone went home happy with the first 90 minutes forgot.
all blades arnt we.

Was that in the league cup about seven years ago?
I was working with a really cocky obnoxious "Leeds" lover (and there were plenty to pick from) at that time.
He was in deep despair the next day (but probably not as he is now, if he still supports them, but I reckon he won't be any more) , about been beaten by crap teams like Sheffield United.
And the rest of us all milked it!
Thanks for the memory. We enjoyed that day, as well.
Glad to say I was wrong about Barnsley loosing.

al_partridge 18-02-2009, 13:47 Absolutely abysmal last night. I've been going for 28 years (and 4 days), and that first half performance was as bad as any I've seen.
It echoed the Doncaster game in that we were awful in the first half and then improved in the second but never really looked like we were going to score. The difference was that Donny were a good team, played well and deservedly beat us, Barnsley were awful but somehow still came away with 3 points.

would you say you raised your game for the birmingham and united games or has something else occured?. the way we have been playing I know you did not have to raise the game much but agree on the donny point , they are a decent side.

Of course we raised our game against you, that goes without saying, but then again surely you should have raised your game for a derby against us as well?
Birmingham, we played OK but weren't particularly great. The problem with Wednesday is that you don't know which side is going to turn up, the side that plays well or the one which is absolutely bloody awful and doesn't have a clue. Too often it's the latter, and that inconsistency is precisely why we're a midtable side.
I'll level with you, I'm not a massive fan of Laws. He can get the team up for the Sheffield derbies, and talks a good game to the press, but his tactical awareness is definitely lacking. For me he hides too often behind the arguments that he's a nice bloke and he's had no cash to work with. But then again in our current situation we can't afford anyone better. I'd be a bit worried if he did have a lot to spend, because on the only occasion when he's spent big money he brought in Jeffers who everybody knew would be an overpaid disaster.

not really but i'm not as nervous as when we play the likes of barnsley, forest etc. dont expect a win against them but maybe snatch a draw. anyway, off to see if i can pass the ball better than wednesday last night:thumbsup:

CorkerSWFC 18-02-2009, 20:27 That is the worse performance from Wednesday since Law's took over last night, even against Reading we showed more fight than what we did against Barnsley.
I was one of the many who left early and went straight to the dog's and Napoleons, it took many many pint's to get that abysmal showing out of my system.
I don't for the life of me understand what Oconner was doing for Campbell-Ryce's goal, it was comical defending to say the least.
NERVY-OWL 18-02-2009, 22:10 it was dire. laws said there was an improvement in the second half but i cant say it was that much better. jeffers has to start saturday, clarke should only be used as a last resort. maybe give mcallister a start in place of o'conner? similar sort of players i believe. must improve though. we were lucky it was only against barnsley, play like that against palace and we could be well beaten

i'm not criticising laws, he's doing the best he can but i would expect a championship club to be able to pass a ball. i'd be happy with mid table but you am i the only one that is getting a little concerned with how close we could get to the relegation zone. its a tough month and if we pick up 0 points from that lot and teams below pick up some its going to get very worrying. i am behind the team but if they play like that why shouldnt we criticise? i only pointed out a couple of changes, the main 1 being clarke.
i am working on saturday so no game for me anyway but we play like that, palace can do us some damage
the time to judge laws is if & when he gets money to spend, uses it wisely or unwisely & the outcme of results. for the time being just be grateful for consolidation in the championship

Agree we aint safe yet and tuesday night was a bloody awful display but it wasn't a typical Owls display,in a lot of games we have outplayed teams who have a lot better players than we do
And unless all the teams below us have a decent unbeaten run i can't see us being in trouble

Earwiggo 19-02-2009, 14:43 It seems a few cracks are appearing in Wednesday fan's armour.
The Forest, Donny and Barnsley results have done nothing to curb the beginnings of unrest.
Hope the next few results calm things down a bit, but March's fixtures are looking more and more daunting.
It's going to be a very difficult next month or so. :(
Not confident at all about the Palace game, and we HAVE to play towards the top end of our capabilities to get anything at all in March I reckon.
It could be a demoralising time, and it's up to BL to make sure it's not.
He's picked us up before, and he really has to earn his dosh over the next six games, or it could be curtains half closed. :(

don't think there is a prayer of wednesday going down, they are capable of raising their game, unfortunately.

i dont see any problems in that respect -mid table finish
SpeedwayDan 19-02-2009, 18:59 With our squad of players we're no better and hopefully no worse than being a mid table team.
So i'd be happy enough to finish where we are now.

Just don't put diamonds on it.
Or carve it in stone! :hihi:
They're not real diamonds, and it's reconstituted stone! :hihi:

i really dont think we are as poor as a lot of the teaMS in the bottom six
al_partridge 19-02-2009, 21:20 It isn't this part of the season anyone should worry about,it's always the run in
and ours are
Norwich away
Derby home
QPR away
Southampton home
Bristol City away
Except for the Bristol game i dont see us having too many problems
We've also got Cardiff at home the last game of the season.
It's all very well saying that we're playing a lot of poor teams on paper, but the end of the season is the worst possible time to be playing them as they'll be scrapping for every point.

Forgot about Cardiff, was going on mi knowledge as Owls site was playing up earlier
Admit Cardiff might be a sticky wicket as they are going for play offs but still think we will be safe by then
NERVY-OWL 19-02-2009, 22:54 must admit seeing the run in does calm my nerves a bit but like someone said, depends what wednesday team turns up and those teams are going to be fighting for every point, can we though, thats the question.
CorkerSWFC 19-02-2009, 23:46 I think we'll give Palace a good game, we could do with Simek and Sodje to come back and bring a bit of freshness to the team.

I agree Corker, we need some sort of a kick to shake us up a bit.
Not sure about your views on the visit of Palace though!

whats worrying me is the sloppy gaols we are giving away at present

i knowit has ,trouble is you can get away wit the odd one as long as you are scoring at the other end, but we have dried up there as well
