More than one bank is thought to be involved in the fraud.

Friend of mine at UNI banks with HSBC, phoned up a call center, and asked for £100 to be transferred into his Dad's account, the next day his account was empty. The employee had transferred all his money and overdraft into his own account and run, presumably after emptying other people's accounts.

He got the money refunded, and £150 compensation, but it took his Dad to get it back for him, because the bank wouldn't speak to my friend and weren't interested.

I suppose it's easy to say that this could happen anyway, BUT look at why the call centers are there. It's a cheaper environment, they can pay the staff less money, but they're dealing with the same information, and it's a poor country in many ways. Are people not going to be MORE tempted than those in the UK to steal, or breach confidences?

(Trying to keep this topic away from the fact I just can never understand what they're saying!)

It's happened with UK based call centres as well - details of celebrity accounts have been 'lifted' and used, along with credit card numbers, debit card numbers and the three digit authorisation codes needed to use the cards over the net.

In any country, pay peanuts, get staff you don't vet, you'll get the odd bad 'un.

And Mastercard have just announced that 40 million Mastercard and Visa accounts were compromised after a hacker broke in to their Atlanta, US, based processing facilities.

I have many issues with Indian call centres, but **** poor security isn't unique to them.

I usually get a Scot or a Welsh person with the LTSB.
