2 of you mention Neil Sedaka ( Ousetunes and Boppin Bruce)

' Ooh I hear laughter in the rain..' I love that one.

who has some very catchy songs and my mum's persistant playing of his records has left its legacy with us kids...

But did he write most of them? I seem to think Neil Diamond wrote a few for him? But I could be very wrong....

Yes, you are very wrong. Neil Sedaka composed more than 1,000 tunes, including a dozen major pop hits he recorded between 1959 to 1963. Most of them were co-authored with Howard Greenfield, his lyricist until 1972.

In the early 60s he worked as a full-time writer churning out hits in the Brill Building, New York's famous "songwriting factory" alongside the likes of Carole King and Neil Diamond, which is possibly what you are thinking of.

I believe Neil Sedaka also wrote Is This The Way To Amarillo (which we all know we are sick to death with at the mo but have to admit to its being a darn good choon). Actually, he co-wrote it.

I mentioned Kriss Kristofferson merely because he wrote For The Good Times which Perry Como had a massive hit with.

Shame on me for not mentioning Hal David and Burt Bacharach. Ega95jch (cathcy and memorable, not!) rightly mentions these two faultless songwriters.

And Ega also mentions the merits of Tilbrook and Difford. These two would compliment Timo's fine thread on English songwriters in their very english songwriting, esp stuff like Up The Junction.
