I have been making a CD, which is browsable via the use of HTML.

However none of the PDF's will launch from the CD using IE6, neither will it prompt you to install the adobe acrobat reader if people don't have it. I can't sell a CD if it doesn't work :gag:

Works fine with Firefox for me.

Can anyone let me into the secret of why IE refuses to play ball? :suspect:

Very strange because I sell CDs with PDFs on and they browse OK.

Is IE configured to work with PDFs? I.e. can you render a PDF from a web link?

Yep, it isn't just this computer it is doing it with two others as well (both with service pack 2 installed)

However if the bloke takes it to work, it works fine on his works computer with IE (don't know the setup there)

I have cxhecked the 'Allow active content to run from CD's' is ticked in the options, and doublechecked adobe is in as a plugin (it should be as it opens PDF's perfectly well from the internet.

You can see my dilemma though don't want to sell a duff CD to computer numpties.

Grrrr, getting mad with it now  its needs to be ready for the weekend.

Do the pdfs have any odd characters in their filenames? I had a problem with IE and PDFs that was down to an apostrophe in one of the filenames recently.

Nope just normal words, and if it is two words then it is labelled like this wordone_wordtwo.pdf.

Ok if I manually type the address in the address bar as the one in my links it works, so it must be something with pressing on an image it doesn't like?

You can see my dilemma though don't want to sell a duff CD to computer numpties. Normally when you have the most annoying format of all on the Internet, I name the PDF, it isn't embedded, but is used a pathetic replacement for HTML, so what you have is an external link to a file, in this case, a PDF.

I would check though if you need some kind of embedded code or sommut, in the same style as Flash which with a prompt will ask you "do you want to install Flash player ?"

Best way is to look at other badly designed pages which have PDFs linked.

In all fairness, if you feel compelled to have PDFs on a CD (or indeed PDFs at all) why not just execute them from the explorer, rather than from within IE... PDFs are slow already, browsing a PDF from within an Internet browser makes it even slower.

It is necessary to have PDF's as it is scanned brochures/photos/magazines and browsing over a 1000 jpeg images without them being collated isn't easy.

Again html is used to browse the CD content to give some order to the chaos of tens of magazines/photos/brochures with thumbnail images showing what is in each pdf, besides the fact it looks more professional for purchase than a few files chucked on a CD.

Once adobe is installed it comes with an external plugin (adobe is provided as a distribution on the CD), which is installed and works fine as I open PDF's all the time on the internet. The problem is getting it to open PDF's locally or from the CD within IE.

but still, PDFs :gag: shoot me or sommut
