Come on own up . . . how many breaks do you go for a day? I'm supposed to have 1 a day, half an hour. You can guarantee someone will brew up every half an hour . . . and tempt me into breaking this rule!

imagine the amount of work that doesn't get done every day through breaks at work!! official & unofficial.

I get 30 mins break in an 8 hour shift. We are not allowed drinks "in the back" of the cafe, but I would faint in the heat if I didn't have any drinks other than in my 30 min break. I tend to have around 4 or 5 unofficial coffee stops, ranging from a full blown cup of coffee to just a splash of milk when I'm in a rush lol

(None of which should happen, I might add lol)

i dont, its a factory and quite strict, dinner is clocked in and out too, as is arriving and leaving at 5 :(

i do sometimes push breaks to last maybe 17 mins tho :P
im painting mostly alone outside, so if i finish a window just before ill slope off and wash up etc then get to my break a couple of mins early and try and push returning :)

i take an hour for lunch, but to be honest a lot of my day is spent playing around on t'internet. I get a coffee or tea whenever i want one, but have no where to drink it except back at my desk. Being sat there doesnt necessarily mean working though.

whenether (I am a civil servant ;) ) you want a cuppa you get one. Get lunch 9has to be 30 minutes but can be over 2 hrs) and there are unofficail fag breaks (which are always useful when you don't smoke)

I work in an office and we do not have anywhere to go for a break. I don't work in the centre of town either, so there is nowhere to go outside of the office. I have a half hour 'break' for lunch, but I am still sat at my desk. I try to stop doing work for that half an hour, but it is very difficult when the phone is ringing and others in the office do not respect the fact that you are on your break, even though they can see you are eating.

What annoys me more though is all the unofficial breaks smokers get. One woman in my office goes out 5 times a day for 10 minutes at a time. That's 50 minutes a day when she is being paid to work, but she is stood outside smoking. Even more annoying is she goes out for a fag break when she is due to go home in less than 20 minutes time!

That sounds very similar to me.When we want a drink, someone just goes and makes one.And as my desk is in the corner,I just fiddle on the t'internet when I want to.

It's not all fun and games, I have to work in birmingham at the moment, which means 2.5k miles/month and 2 nights a week stuck in a hotel.

Get pretty much as many as I want at the moment. The hot weather keeps the punters in the beer garden pubs, and we only get kids and old people escaping the heat into the air conditioning.

I can drink tea, coffee etc whenever I want, and if it's quiet I pop off for a mooch around town, and catch some sun.

It's not always like that though, night shifts mean a 5pm, til 2, with no break because there simply isn't chance.

I don't get an 'official' break at all.
I cover 6, 7, 10 & 12 hour shifts on a 3 week rota.
When I'm at work I'm alone & 'on duty', cos it's a Occy Health Ctr I'm not alowed to shut shop & leave for breaks in case there's an accident or emergency.
So drink & eat whenever I want. it's often disturbed though due to sod's law.

There's 3 things that will liven up any shift!
1: Put the kettle on
2: stick your dinner in the microwave
3: go for a dump.

E V E R Y time :hihi:

wouldn't not being given a break contravene the health and safety at work acts? I thought statuatory minimums were specified depending on the length of your day.

we can compare notes over who has it harder (although i expect you'd win).
Have you had a look at www.capgemini.co.uk we are hiring.

How long does your 4 bus journeys take, it takes me between 1.5hrs and 3 hrs to drive to the office. Fortunately it's only Friday when I have to make the return trip on the same day.

I don't take tea / coffee breaks as such but my job isn't really so regimented that I'm at my desk all day. I'm usually off chatting to people, on my mobile or having meetings. The breaks are any time I can grab five mins!

I'll take about 5 - 6 fag breaks in a day and as many cups of coffee as I can persuade others to make for me which I then sup at my desk.

I do get in early most days and tend to work through lunch so I reckon I'm about spot on with what I take.

It's covered by the Working Time Directive (Yes, the one imposed on us by Europe - the same one that prohibits working more than 48 hours per week). I believe you are entitled to a rest break of at least 30 minutes for every 6 hours you work. You are also entitled to minimum breaks between shifts, and a minimum continuous break of 24 hours every seven days. (This is just off the top of my head, so these figures are ballpark.)

I can drink as much Tea as I like at work, and they even provide mashing tackle milk etc..

I tend to pot up a new mash about every 90 minutes..

Old chinese proverb..

A man with no tea inside him is incapable of understanding truth and beauty.

No???

banesmabes - break times and such like have been covered by UK law for much longer than we've had the working time directive.

I never said they weren't, I just said that that's the law that covers it now.

I don't drink tea - so the Chinese have got that wrong for a start!

Not liking tea or coffee, I don't take any breaks.

Dunno, mate. I have to be honest though, my job is very laid back & could be described as one long rest interspersed with work breaks...

That said I have oft wondered about my average working week being between 40 & 50 hrs Rota'd! - that's not including overtime - that's set hours. There must be something naughty in that, surely?
