Have you ever had a whiff of something ( no jokes please ) and it's reminded you of certain times in your life - abit like music does sometimes . . .

Whenever I smell a new plastic football it reminds me of my first ever football! and the smell of tar takes me back to my schooldays and the good old six weeks holidays!!

note: I did't go around smelling footballs or tar as a youngster. :P

My English teacher at school was a Gothic and she always smelled of sugared almonds whenever I indulge at Xmas time etc I always think back to her.

My kids arm bands always remind me of being in my new paddling pool as a child!

The smell of sulphur/steam reminds me of working at ICI in the 1980's....

oh and countless more smells I cannot list em all - I would be here all night!!

I went to a Christmas Fair at my old Junior school when I was about 23(ish) and it was the first time I'd been back since the day I went upinto the Comp.

The smell had not changed a bit!
All the memories & feelings were reawakened! What a rush of emotions it evoked!

They've knocked it down now so I can't do it any more :(

Bear with me on this but as one who grew up on a farm there are many different (but to most awful) smells that'll take me back.

Pig manure makes me think back to the days when me and my brother used to go fishing in the lake just past the piggerys and spent all day watching dragon flys and trying to catch the one fish in the whole lake.

Sheep dip reminds me of when my Grandad was still alive and we'd help him dip his sheep on his little homestead. Once they all escaped and me, my dad, brothers, uncle and cousins were chasing the flock over barton hills trying to round them up.

Cossack hair spray reminds me of my dad when he'd be getting ready to go out (circa late 80's) and he'd be combing back his hair in the living room mirror.

Readybrek takes me back to when we were kids and all sat round the kitchen table in the mornings before school. Particularly this reminds me of my brother Jimmy's first day at school and we took him under our wings because he was nervous.

Silage and cow manure remind me of the dairy herd we had, mostly they were happy memories of the births of calves, when the milk was so creamy you could scoop the churn into the tank and pull out the creamyest milk you ever saw but what sticks in my mind was when a few cows contracted BSE and then it all went pear shaped because of the scale of the problem. My dad was worried sick about the future of the farm and what would become of the herd. Mostly happy days.

This is a great thread, I've been sat at my desk with tears welling up thinking back over all this- must look like a right loon! :)

Note to self: Get on with some work you soft sod.

I can sometimes catch a smell and it reminds me of an entire day or even part of my life. Somedays it keeps happening over and over.

The smell of plastic pencil cases.

I often have to go into stationary shops for a fix of this smell. Reminds me of the first term at junior school. Think there was a class of 20 7 yr olds sniffing away..

Just to change senses for a moment if I may, I just remarked to my colleague that the sound of seagulls remind me of being on holiday which is a wonderful feeling.

Now that I live by the sea I hear them more often, but hitherto I only heard them when I was on holiday.

It is my favourite sound in the world.

The smell of a home cooked Sunday joint with Yorkshire puddings, it always reminds me of Roy Orbison.
My mum used to listen to his songs while she cooked the Sunday dinner and the smell of roast pork and stuffing takes me back to those halcyon days.
Unfortunately the traditional sunday dinner is not a regular occurance now, we all tend to meet in the pub for a liquid lunch;)

It's not the smell that takes me to the song but the song that takes me to the smell.
Family favourites annd Sunday Lunchtime and Unchained melody-- first time round-- playing on the radio and the smell of the sunday roast and yorkshire puddings sizzling in the oven.

My wee, a few hours after a bowl of sugar puffs actually smells like sugar puffs!

Strange but true.

The sense of smell is supposed to be the most acute - followed by music I think. If I smell flowering red currant bush flowers, it takes me back to being a little girl in our garden. Also, carnations - that makes me remember the posy of flowers I carried as a bridesmaid when I was 5 or 6.

Reading about the sound of seagulls - yep, its the same for me - mind goes straight to the seaside. But there is a certain noise that wood pigeons make that reminds me of our favourite holiday place in Devon. I'm off there next week - hurray!

OMG Sam! I am the same on that one!! LOL:P pencil cases just take me right back into my schoolroom all those years ago - I can see the teacher writing on the board and the kids messing around behind his back at their desks . . . . ;)

Hey Sultana, not too sure Music counts as one of the sense...but I think I know what you mean.

My strongest smell/memory is petrol. brings back memories of when I was 4 in Chile and my mom used to take me for rides on the back of her bike.
Candyfloss smell reminds me of going to funfairs when I was about 5 (I've always hated the smell of the stuff).
Watermelon smell reminds me of long, hot summers spent in Valencia.
And finally, freshly cut grass reminds me of the start of 'summer' (back in the day when May was a hot month!) at school - when you'd mess around in it during break/lunch

Definitely, definitely, definitely!

Perfume inparticular works. That stuff called, either Poison or Paris (I always get the two names confuddled) takes me back to Christmas 1984. Mum wore it around that time and my brother and I bought her some more from Debenhams.

Similarly, the perfume I bought my first g/f, something like Joie De Vive, still goes to my heart like an arrow. I'm not only taken back to the very excitement of a first, serious relationship, but I get that impatient feeling in my stomach I used to have to live with. (Being penfriends meant we only saw each other fortnightly, so these urges would build up. In the intervening days, she'd spray this perfume on my letters - ah, beats 't'internet any day!)

Brut 33 reminds me of my 18th b/d in June 1987. Gold, by Yardley reminds me of going to Liverpool in July 1984 to see the Beatles attractions. Mandate reminds me of 1988.

I could go on, you get the idea.....,

warm milk reminds me of me and my dad eating breakfast in winter when i was little. It was so nice just the two of us before all the rest of the house got up. With 6 people in one house it was the only time i had on my own with him and i loved it.

Nivea reminds me of my mum and grandma.

My dad worked in the steel works and whenever I smell an oily rag kind of smell it reminds me of him when he had just come in from work.

The smell of tar on the roads reminds me of when I was a little girl and the weather was like it is today we would sit on the edge of the pavement poking the melted tar with a stick.

I used to love Speedway...oh the drone of those bikes and the smell...ummm yes and the sight of Mark Fiora in his leathers but without his helmet.....I adored that guy!!

Shame they had to close the speedway/dog track in Middlesbrough...it was years ago now!

creosalt (? not sure of spelling!)- reminds me of playing in the garden as a child (very concientious neighbour!)

agree with the plastic pencil cases- straight back to primary school in coundon! also reminiscent of school related is the smell of gloy glue- used to spread it over the desk, wait for it to dry and peel it off- who knows why?!?

tweed perfume, and it still makes me feel quesy! my ma used to put her perfume on just before getting into the car, and on long car journeys, the overpowering smell was guarenteed to make me sick every time!!!

Whenever I smell manure I think immediately of the board game Monopoly. I had a friend called Dave and used to play 'Monotony', as we hilariously dubbed it, for hours and hours 'round at his house. It was a very old set with wooden houses and hotels and a huge graphic of a steam locomotive across the centre of the board. Along with his parents, Dave lived with his Gran (Gemima), who was extremely old and papery and confused the TV with the window, and vice-versa. His Dad (Sid) used to taunt her with cries of, 'what can you see on the telly, Mima?' 'Our road, Sid'. 'What can you see out of the window, Mima?' 'Grandstand, Sid' etc etc.

Whenever we played Monopoly, there seemed to be a smell of manure in the room. It took me years to work out the smell came from Gemima. So, there you go, not very cheerful is it! The smell of manure brings back memories of Dave (who was a nice boy), his parents (who were as common as muck), Dave's Gran (who was a girl before the turn of the century before last and must have wondered where she'd ended up) and Monopoly.

coconut sum cream rminds me of my summer holidays in newquay! Chlorine reminds me of herinthorp swimming baths, smoke machine reminds me of holiday camp discos, the smell of pig shat reminds me of my dad driving me to scarborugh and we always used to pass a pig farm.

I went to visit someone today, and he was showing me his greenhouse. You know that musty greenhouse smell? It took me back to being four years old and helping my grandad pot up his plants.

Not so much the smell, but everytime I have Alpen it reminds me of a time when I was about 10ish & stayed with my sister in her digs in Newcastle U/T.
I'd never had it till then & was very dubious of it.

What a pleasant surprise.
